This survey was undertaken to review the Alfred Hospital registered nurses uniform that had been introduced in 1982. For a period of approximately 18 months (November 1989-May 1991) a group of staff members (26 female and 12 male) trialled a variety of uniforms, at the end of the trial they were asked to complete a questionaire. Questionaires were also distrubted to 923 "observers" (nursing staff not wearin the trial uniforms) for their opinions. This nurse's collar, cap and apron would have been worn by student nurses at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne in the 1960's. Although the style did not change much from earlier years the length of the skirt had shortened. The white semi circular collar has a single row of drawn thread work 1.5 centimeters from the outer edge and is made of starched cotton fabric. The cap is made of a half circle of fine white cotton lawn with a turn back front edge bearing the Alfred Hospital emblem. It has a tape casing about 1.5 centimeters from the edge which contains a thin tape for gathering up the edge of the cap. all nurses at the Alfred Hospital were required to use these boxes to send uniforms to laundry, also all hospital staff who had uniforms supplied. (from previous catalogue): All nursing staff wore hospital supplied uniforms for much of the twentieth century. The Royal Melbourne Hospital ran the 'Central Linen Service' for during this time - doing all the laundry for all the public hospitals in Melbourne. Staff uniforms were laundered separately, everyone had their own numbered laundry case. Staff also had a small printed docket book with duplicate copies (complete with a piece of carbon paper) and the number of uniform items were detailed when the case was sent off to the laundry. The dress is made from fine houndstooth check blue and white cotton material. Small pocket on the left hand side of the bodice. Three white, fabric covered buttons on front of bodice. Miss Margaret Irene Lang was appointed Matron-in -Chief and her staff's conditions in service were similar to those of the Australian Army Nursing Service. The nurses were originally attached to RAAF bases in Australia but later served in New Guinea and the Pacific Islands. With the Medical Air Evacuation Transport Unit (MAETU), established in 1944, nurses helped with aerial evacuation of casualties and were involved with the liberation of Prisoners of War from Singapore and other areas. The service was disbanded at the end of World War Two, but in 1948 a peace-time service was formed, and the RAAF nurses have served in the Korean War, the Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War.
