Rev. George Wilkinson was a prominent figure in Williamstown, known for his role as the first rector of Holy Trinity Church from 1859 to 1875. He was a native of County Cork and was appointed vicar of the prefabricated iron church imported from England. Wilkinson was recognized for his gentle manner and compassionate character, and he was a strong advocate of total abstinence, which was a significant aspect of his legacy. The Rev. Canon Alan Nichols AM is an Anglican minister and author. After serving the Church in Sydney as parish priest and media spokesman, he was CEO of a family welfare agency in Melbourne, and Archdeacon of Melbourne. He then served for seven years in refugee work, first in Thailand with Jesuit Refugee Service Asia Pacific, and then with World Vision Australia. He was present in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide, and is a Canon of St John's Cathedral, Gahini, in Rwanda. Author of more than 20 books and monographs, mostly in the areas of refugee studies, Christian approaches to public policy, Christian ethics and biography. This bottle was used in the pharmacy of the Warrnambool chemist Francis Bloore. It contained a mixture made up for Archdeacon Thomas Bennett who was the Anglican Vicar of Christ Church, Warrnambool from 1912 to 1915. As Captain Bennett he was the chaplain of the 22nd Battalion in World War One from 1915 to 1917. He became Archdeacon of Warrnambool in 1917 and held this position until 1937. He spent much time on his return assisting returned World War One soldiers and their kin in the Warrnambool area. He was the first President of the Warrnambool Returned Soldiers League. Francis Bloore, born in Ballarat in 1874, came to Warrnambool about 1912. In 1914 he leased a newly-built shop at the corner of Liebig Street and Raglan Parade and continued on the business until the late 1930s. This bottle is of great interest as it is one of the few items we have in our collection associated with the pharmacy business of Francis Bloore. The bottle is also associated with an important Warrnambool Anglican Church identity, Archdeacon Bennett. This is a glass bottle with a rectangular-shaped body with rounded edges, a circular-shaped neck and a circular moulded top with an opening. It has a cork stopper. The top of the bottle is chipped. The label on the front of the bottle is partly torn away and very stained with most of the handwriting and some of the printing indecipherable. A badly damaged thick black hardcover Holy Bible with an embossed insignia on the front cover as well as lined patterns on the front and back covers. The front has stamped inside a circular insignia the words, 'British and Foreign Bible Society, Two Shillings and Sixpence' embossed in the middle. The end paper at the front has come away from the spine, there are marks and foxing inside. The text is clear. There is no spine and many pages are loose. Throughout the bible are several added pieces of handwritten notes on paper, small leaflets a newspaper article about the death of King George VI. There is no pagination. Included are two ribbon bookmarks, one yellow with 'Think of Me. 1870.' embroidered on perforated paper in blue cross stitch. The other blue one has 'Love' embroidered on perforated paper in coloured thread. This booklet was produced for the Diamond Jubilee of Christ Church, Warrnambool in 1910. The Anglican Church was established in Warrnambool in 1850 with the arrival of the first minister, the Rev. Peter Beamish. He served in the Warrnambool district until 1895. The foundation stone of Christ Church was laid in 1855 and the church was consecrated in 1862. A tower was erected in 1881. At the time of the Diamond Jubilee the Anglican Minister in Warrnambool was Archdeacon Peacock. This booklet is of interest because it is a memento of the 1910 Diamond Jubilee celebrations at Christ Church, Warrnambool. This is a soft cover booklet of 24 pages. The cover is brownish orange in colour with a sepia image of Christ Church, Warrnambool on the front with gold lettering within an ornate border in sepia tonings. The booklet contains several black and white photographs, the programme of events for the Diamond Jubilee in 1910 and historical information on the church and its ministers. The printed material in the booklet is contained within a red-lined border. The booklet has been stapled but the staples have been removed. This is the program of a concert held at Price’s Exchange Hall in Warrnambool in December, 1867. The concert was under the management of the Warrnambool Anglican Minister, Archdeacon T. P. Beamish and the proceeds were in aid of the Warrnambool Church of England Common School. The programme was printed on silk at the office of the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper. This paper was founded in 1851 by a pioneer settler in Warrnambool, Richard Osburne and it was leased by Henry Laurie and William Fairfax from 1867 to 1872; these latter two became the founders of the Warrnambool Standard (1872 to the present day) and were the printers of this program. There were 26 musical items, a recitation by John Flaxman and a ten minute interval. Three of the performers at this concert were well-known in Warrnambool for their musical talents – singer, William Fairfax, noted above, singer Sarah Welchman (also the proprietor of a private school for girls) and singer Mrs Steedman (also the proprietor of a girls’ private school in Warrnambool). The Warrnambool Church of England Common School (number 661) was established in Warrnambool as a Government-subsidized denominational school in 1860 and closed in 1876 when the Jamieson Street Warrnambool State School (SS1743) opened. Archdeacon Peter Beamish, the sponsor of the concert, was the Anglican Minister in Warrnambool from 1850 to 1895. Price’s Exchange Hall was part of a Temperance Hotel opened in Liebig Street in 1861 by Richard Wrench. In the 1860s Thomas Price opened the Royal Exchange Hotel on these premises and his Exchange Hall was the largest hall in Warrnambool at that time. This is a most significant item because:- 1. It is a rare example of a 19th century programme printed on silk 2. The listed concert programme is a good example of the type of entertainment held in Warrnambool in the 1860s 3. Some of the participants in the concert were well-known entertainers in Warrnambool in the 1860s – Fairfax, Steedman, Welchman 4. The programme is one of the few mementoes we hold of the Church of England Common School 5. Other people important in Warrnambool’s history are connected to this item – Archdeacon Beamish, Fairfax and Laurie of the Warrnambool Standard and Thomas Price and his Royal Exchange Hotel Hall. This is a programme printed on silk. The sheet has a decorative border, black printing and an image of musical instruments and music scores. St Peter's Church was established in 1861 in the school house. In 1864 the question of building a church was seriously discussed. A foundation stone for the church was laid on 16 November 1864 by Bendan S. Hassell. The architect was Charles Davenport Cuthbert; the trustees were Somerville Learmonth, W.P. Whitcombe, Robert Wynne and J.B. McQuie. The church building committee consisted of Horace walker, J.S. Carver, John M. Fisher, Robert Williams, Thomas Gibson, John E. Hodgson and W. Lindisay Richardson. The foundation stone of the Soldier's Chapel was laid on 06 April 1917. The beautiful stained glass in the chapel was donated by Mrs W. Tunbridge and H.C. Curwen-Walker, in memory of their sons who were killed during World War One. In 1929 a new three manual organ by London's Hill, Norman and Beard was installed. Shows a bluestone house surrounded by lush, well-developed garden. House is in good order with 4 chimneys, a porch and water-tank. To the left, partially obscured by the shrubbery stands the bearded Rev.Wagg with hat. To the right is a girl around ?10 years old, with parasol and hat in her hands. This was Mortlakes' Anglican Vicarage from c. 1886 to c.1916 when present one was built next to St.James church in Shaw Street. House stood in Sagnol's paddock (Waggs Lane) until 1950's when it was demolished reportedly by a group of boys using dynamite!) Rev. Wagg was a long-serving and well-regarded Anglican minister who served Mortlake from 1886 to1916. Wagg's Lane takes its name from his former residency there. A new Vicarage was built c.1916 next to the church. Put together by a member of the Eltham Community Action Group in participation with various artists, writers, local business people and other local citizens and sent to Minister Maclellan, Planning Minister in the Kennet Government in protest of proposed plans to sell the former Eltham Shire Office site at 895 Main Road Eltham in order to develop a Shell Service Station and Hungry Jacks fast food outlet. The purpose was to express what is unique about the character of Eltham, why people live and work there and why such a development would be out of character and inappropriate for the Eltham Gateway along with alternative development proposals.
