Crossley (Vicar)’ ...The Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne in 1939 was Frederick Head. ...This book was given to Lorna Steller on the occasion of her Confirmation in 1939. Lorna Otelia Steller was born in Warrnambool in 1923, the daughter of Max and Felie Steller. Max Steller was a Warrnambool hairdresser who hailed originally from Germany. Lorna married Arthur George (Bill) Rogers and they lived in MacDonald Street in South Warrnambool. The Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne in 1939 was Frederick Head. No information has been found on the Rev. Crossley. This book is of interest because it belonged to a 20th century Warrnambool resident, Lorna Steller. It is also of interest as an example of religious texts given at confirmation in 1939.This is a hard cover book of 96 pages. The cover is red with gold lettering on the front cover. A red ribbon for marking a place in the pages is attached to the binding. Originally a small weatherbopard building, on a site almost opposite the primary school. Services were held in the church for almost 70 years. The building was burnt out in 1965 and Miss Elizabeth Doney donated a new larger site consisting of 3 house blocks on the east (high) side of Main Road. The foundation stone was laid in August 1966, and the church was dedicated in December 1966. About 30 local families were involved in the rebuilding. Although dedicated in 1966, it could not be consecrated until the debt was paid off. The building is in a very dilapidated condition, and is totally inadequate for the extensive requirements of the Mission to Seamen."
