After the second World War Legacy understood there was a need to redefine the criteria of people that they help. There was discussions about whether the deceased serviceman had to have served overseas or whether they could have served in any capacity. Legatee Cremor proposed the motion at the General Meeting on 9 May 1949. The motion was: 'That the eligibility rules of JLC be amended to provide that the dependents of any deceased member who was attested for service in the Armed Forces of the 1939-45 War be eligible for Legacy benefits.' He also prepared a two page document of the arguments for the changes. A second document lays out the arguments against the motion. A file copy of a 2 page letter to the President supports Legatee Cremor's motion, the signature is indistinct so it's not known who wrote it. The arguments against included that the extension of eligibility would greatly increase Legacy's workload and budget required would increase 10 fold. They estimated that the men of the '1914 War' would be retired by 1965, and that there weren't enough men from the '1939 War' to make the decision. The notation H24 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. William Abednego Thompson (11 October 1811 – 23 August 1880), also known as Bendigo Thompson, was an English bare-knuckle boxer who won the heavyweight championship of England from James Burke on 12 February 1839.[3] He was inducted into The Ring magazine Hall of Fame in 1955, the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991[3] and the Bare Knuckle Boxing Hall of Fame in 2011. Pons asinorum was the name given to a wooden carving made by road worker Finlay Munro in the early 1920s at Boulder Creek, on the old Princess Highway, between Orbost and Cann River. The carved face was said to mock the supervising engineer after an argument about putting the road alignment across a swamp that required new bridges. The Italian workmen had advocated for a different route to avoid the need for building new bridges across the swamp. Between 1965 & 1972, twenty-year-old Australian males had to register for National Service. The ballot was held twice a year and the marbles, which bear numbers that represented birth dates, were used in a barrel to determine who would be called up. Each numbered marble represented two birthdates. Men born on the dates of the numbers drawn were thereby called up for National Service. National Service was a hotly debated issue. These ballot balls were the items at the centre of the argument. Dr William Bottomley (1881-1952) was a specialist based at Collins Street who advocated for humanist and practical solutions to public health issues. His love of the Emerald countryside which he visited at weekends with his family led him to being the primary instigator of the late 1920s development - the iconic and beautiful Emerald Country Club. He later retired to Emerald where he built a Modernist-inspired home, Silver Birches, which is of architectural significance. This 1911 booklet outlines his argument for sexually transmitted diseases to be treated as a public health issue instead of the practice at that time which was to blame the victim.This book is significant because it outlines Dr Bottomley's argument for treating sexually transmitted diseases as a public health problem in the early 20th century when this was not a widely held view. This magazine was taken to Antarctica by Richard W. Richards, a member of Shackleton's expedition. Richards was a member of the Ross Sea Party. The item was returned to Dick Richards after L. Quartermain found it above Richards' bunk in Cape Evans in 1961 when a party were sent down by the New Zealand Government to clear the hut of ice. Richards later gave it to the donor because of the article on the swerve of cricket balls.This copy of Nature was used by Dick Richards when he was marooned at Cape Evans during the Shackleton Antarctic Expedition. The hut used by Richards and his party was also used by Captain Scott. The magazine dates before the use of the hut by Captain Scott so it may be assumed that it belonged to Scott or one of his party. In 1960, during ice being cleared from the hut, the magazine was found above Dick Richards' bunk and returned to him in 1961. This is a camp of survey workers surveying the railway line . They were camped at Mossiface in 1907. It has been sent as a postcard - "Dear Miss Ross, Just a card, hoping you are well etc, trust you have not forgotten our trip. I forgot to get the name of the street in Hobart of Mr Benjamin or Temple?????? Sufficient. Yours sincerely H.R. Gordon". It has been dated September 30th 1907. There had been men surveying in East Gippsland from the late 19th century. Railway surveyors advocated two lines beyond Bairnsdale – one via Bruthen and the Tambo Valley to Omeo, the other via Swan Reach and Colquhoun to Orbost, then on to Bendoc and the border. With all the argument and feuding between the warring factions, by the end of 1891, the Parliamentary Railways Standing Committee gave up in despair of trying to reach any agreement and abandoned the idea altogether. Finally, with all problems solved, the first sod was turned at Mossiface on 9.1.1912, the government sticking to the original route in the 1890 survey .This is a pictorial record of a surveyors' camp in the early 20th century.
