This collection of three photos of the Australian information Technology Award (AITA) won by the Royal Australian Survey Corps (RA Svy) AUTOMAP 2 computer-based map production system, was taken in 1984 at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. The following article appeared in the ARMY Newspaper on Thursday 21st February 1985. ‘In computerised map production. Survey soldiers lead the world. BENDIGO: Army surveyors have been put on the map as world leaders in computerised map production following the Australian information Technology Awards. RA Svy won the Computer Assisted Draughting – Mapping section for its Automap II System which has created considerable interest among overseas defence experts. The award for the digital mapping system was accepted by OC Air Survey Sqn, MAJ Rob John, who said it was a great morale-booster for the soldiers of the Bonegilla (sic)* -based Army Survey Regiment. "Setting up a state-of-the-art system like Automap II. is an enormous task, " he said. "We started in August 1983 and it's only recently that we have achieved production results. "We were all very pleased to have our efforts recognised in this way. “Of course, credit must also go to the Intergraph Corporation for manufacturing the system and carrying out most of the development." RA Svy is responsible for producing all of Australia's maps used for defence purposes. Its topographical maps have a scale of 1:50,000 or 1:100,000 although Automap II has the capability of producing smaller scale maps - down to 1: 2,000,000. Automap II consists of three computers and three sub-systems: input, raster scanning, and graphic edit. The input sub-system has eight stereo plotters, two interactive graphic workstations and a system manager workstation. The stereo plotters use superimposition optics to digitise features from aerial photographs. It incorporates a voice recognition system so the operator can simply say "House", "Windmill", etc; and the relevant feature will be incorporated in the digital picture. Individual map separations are scanned and converted by the raster scanning sub-system to a digital raster image. This image is then converted to a graphics file in Intergraph format.’ *Note – the Army Survey Regiment was located in Bendigo, not Bonegilla as incorrectly stated in the article. The AUTOMAP 2 system was an upgrade to the AUTOMAP 1 system, comprising Intergraph graphic edit workstation terminals networked to VAX 750/785 main frame computers. Unlike AUTOMAP 1, operators could display digital topographic features on monitors for editing. Successful adaptation of this system meant RASvy was at the forefront of digital mapping/cartographic systems in Australia and overseas. The system comprised Input (Wild B8 Aviograph feature extraction) Raster Scanning (digitising from compilation sheets, Graphic Edit (cartographic completion) and Plot Verification Sub Systems. The system was operational from 1984 to its ‘Newheart’ upgrade in 1993. Throughout its life, the system was progressively refined with productivity gains, achieved from award winning technical development in-house by talented and innovative Army Survey Regiment personnel. These flow diagrams and in particular the Introduction to Automap 2 booklet is designed to provide a general description of the second phase of the AUTOMAP system (Automap 2) installed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. It contains information that managers and supervisors need to know and serves as a preliminary introduction for anyone interested in learning about AUTOMAP 2. In addition, a number of annexes are included to provide more detailed descriptions of significant features and components of the system. System Objectives. In order that RASVY can carry out its mapping programme effectively, an efficient production system is required that can acquire and edit digital data from a topographic data base and thence automatically produce high quality maps using that digital data. The existing system, AUTOMAP 1, provides a small part of such a system. AUTOMAP 2 expands the capabilities of AUTOMAP 1 in data capture, computing power and data handling for cartographic purposes. AUTOMAP 2 includes state-of-the-art technology, introduces interactive graphics as a production tool and shifts procedures from a current mix of analogue and digital technologies to an almost totally digital system. This collection of eight photos was most likely taken in circa 1982-1983, featuring the removal of AUTOMAP 1’s Gerber Optical Line Following (OLF) scanner Sub-System from Air Survey Squadron’s Building 16, in preparation for the installation of the replacement AUTOMAP 2 system. Introduced in 1975, the AUTOMAP 1 computer assisted cartography and mapping system was the first computer assisted cartography and mapping system utilised by the Survey Corps and the first system used by Australian mapping organisations. The Gerber OLF scanner was mainly used to digitise contours on a map sheet separation with individual lines at least 0.125 mm wide and no closer than 0.25 mm to the next line. The operator initiated the OLF by placing its light sensitive digitizing head on a contour line. The OLF could digitise up to 50 mm per second on straight lines and complete an average density contour sheet in approximately 8 hours. The operator occasionally intervened to restart the OLF to allow it to continue if it failed to correctly discriminate the contours. The components of AUTOMAP 1 were the Input Sub-System of four Wild B8s stereoplotters and three Gradicon digitising tables, the Optical Line Following Sub-System – Gerber OLF, the Verification Sub-System – Gerber 1442 drum plotter, the General Purpose Sub-system – HP21MX computer and the Output Sub-System – Gerber 1232 flatbed plotter). The first map was published in 1978 (Strickland 3665-3, 1:50,000). AUTOMAP 1 was the first computer assisted cartography and mapping system utilised by the Survey Corps and was the first system used by Australian mapping organisations. This pamphlet produced by Major Sam Thompson US Army Engineer Corps on exchange to Australia was published as a guide to AUTOMAP 1, the Army Survey Regiment’s first computer-based map production system. It examined how automation had changed the compilation and drafting phases of the map production process. It attempted to present in a light-hearty story telling style, short and clear description of each AUTOMAP 1 sub-system with photos of staff and equipment, diagrams and humorous cartoons. The cartoonist is unknown. The pamphlet was printed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo Army Survey Regiment pamphlet comprises a manilla card cover printed in colour with 24 pages with photographs in black and white; and descriptions, diagrams, and cartoons printed in colour. It is bounded by two staples on its spine. The coloured pages have been scanned at 300 dpi and are stored on a USB Digital Storage Device. The page images have been converted into a video (.mp4) format and also stored on the USB. This is a set of eight photographs of technicians operating photogrammetric equipment in Air Survey Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. c1960s to c1980s. The Wild A9 Stereocomparator and Wild B9 stereo plotter were introduced in 1962. The Wild B8 stereo plotter was introduced in 1966. Technicians used the Wild A9 Stereocomparator to accurately measure between pass, tie, and survey control points on aerial photographs. The Wild B9 and B8s were used for plotting topographic detail and contours. These analogue machines were manually controlled by adjusting the control knobs for the orientation of the 3D image. The B9s used a four and a half square, and the B8s used a nine-inch square photo image on a film or glass diapositive which allowed highly accurate extraction of map features. At first, plotting with B8 and B9 stereo plotters was undertaken at the aerial photography scale of 1:80,000 in pencil onto a controlled plotting sheet. Sheets were then inked up and reduced photographically to the 1: 100,000 publication scale for scribe impression production. In the early days topographic detail and contours were plotted with a pencil or ink pen mounted at the far end of the pantograph arm. The plotting procedure was upgraded to direct plotting in ink with photographic reduction to publication scale. In 1975 four B8s were upgraded with tri-axis locaters as part of the Input Sub-system to enable digital extraction to AUTOMAP 1’s topographic database. When AUTOMAP 2 was introduced in 1982 these B8s were upgraded, and additional machines added to expand the Army Survey Regiment’s digital capture capability. This collection of 10 photos was most likely taken in 1984. It’s evident in these photos the visitors were taken on a tour through the production areas of Air Survey Squadron, with Wild B8 photogrammetic plotting workstations featured in the first three photos and demonstrations of the AUTOMAP 2 production system in the following photos. The AUTOMAP 2 system was an upgrade to the AUTOMAP 1 system comprising Intergraph graphic edit workstation terminals networked to VAX 750/785 main frame computers. Unlike AUTOMAP 1, operators could display digital topographic features on monitors for editing. Successful adaptation of this system meant RASvy was at the forefront of digital mapping/cartographic systems in Australia and overseas. The system comprised Input (B8 feature extraction) Raster Scanning (digitising from compilation sheets, Graphic Edit (cartographic completion) and Plot Verification Sub Systems. CAPT Rob John was the project officer responsible for the acceptance trials and implementation of AUTOMAP 2. The system was operational from 1984 to its ‘Newheart’ upgrade in 1993. Control points were transferred onto the mapping diapositives of aerial photography by drilling their locations into the photographic emulsion. SPR Viv (Hawkins) Doherty in photo .2P, SPR Jeanette Drury-Lane in photo .5P and SGT Sandy Craig are operating a Wild B8 Stereoplotter coupled to a digital workstation in Air Survey Squadron c1994. Topographic features were extracted with the B8 in 3D and feature coded with attributes, using keyboard, menu, keypad and voice inputs to the computer. The features were stored in the AUTOMAP 2 digital database for subsequent cartographic production and printing. These nine photographs of technical equipment were provided to the Directorate of Survey as input to the 1990-1991 Annual Report. The equipment in Photos .1P and .2P were used to evaluate/validate colour values on printed maps. The equipment in Photo .3P is a daylight film processor. The Optronix 5040 Laser Scanner/Plotter was shown in Photos .4P to .6P. The Print Room’s Map Handling Station in photo .7P provided ergonomic benefits to the Printer Technician and improved despatching productivity. The Optical Disk Archive and Retrieval System (ODARS) equipment in .8P was optical "platter" disk technology for the secure and long term archive storage of large amounts of digital map data. Map data was transferred from large reels of magnetic tape. As most map type (letters and names) generation was done in Automap 2, The ITEK Typesetter shown in photo .9P was close to obsolete in 1991. This set of 20 black & white photographs of the refurbishment of Air Survey Squadron’s production areas, was taken in circa 1982. These refurbishments were most likely in preparation of the AUTOMAP 2 production system and to accommodate the expansion of the Army Survey Regiment’s work force. This photo set also includes the exterior and interior of a new building - 16A, a modular building of several sections transported in and joined together as part of the expansion. Another modular building - 16B was added later in the 1980s to accommodate Technical Services. This is a collection of 20 photographs of Royal Australian Survey Corps phases of map production at the School of Military Survey, Bonegilla, the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo, and the Army Map Depot, Bandiana circa 1990. Colour photos are on 35mm slide film and were scanned at 96 dpi. They are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. Photo .1P was probably taken on a survey station overlooking Lake Hume near Albury-Wodonga. The field party occupying the survey station was likely from a Map Control Survey course conducted by the School of Military Survey, Bonegilla. This survey station was part of a geodetic network used in field survey training and RASvy’s Lake Hume Test Range. Photos .3P to .16P were taken at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo and photos .17P & .18P were taken at the Army Map Depot, Bandiana. These 35 photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Although historical tours of Fortuna occurred on a regular basis, this was the first technical open day since 1972. The Royal Australian Survey Corps recognised that an Open Day was the best way for the local community in Bendigo to gain an insight into the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It also gave them an opportunity to tour through historic Fortuna Villa. This occasion is covered in more detail in page 143 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4.
