The French Collection was donated to the Society in 2022. This collection includes documents, artworks, books, costumes and artefacts belonging to two families. A number belonged to, or were made by the grandparents of the donor: Vida May Wing and her husband Hubert Charles McDonald. [Other items belonging to Vida and Hubert are in the collections of the Australian Performing Arts Museum and Museum Victoria.] A second significant group of objects were gifts made to the donor's family by Lucy (Jean) Hornby of Queen Street, Kew whose family had been early settlers in the district. Vida May Wing was born in Richmond in 1882. A noted teacher of plain, fancy and step dancing, during the first two decades of the twentieth century she held annual fancy dancing and floral balls, where her pupils were the performers. In 1916, she married Hubert Charles McDonald. She died in 1959.Upright, embossed celluloid, silk iined vanity dresser box which belonged to Vida May McDonald (nee Wing). The sides of the box are covered with purple figured velvet while the lids are covered with embossed celluloid. The case has a number of panels which open to reveal its pink silk lined interior which was once fitted out with mirrors, combs, brushes, and makeup jars. This stencil was used to mark bags of dried bean seed, in this case Brown Beauty bean seeds, produced by farmers in the Orbost district and clean and bagged by Fisher Bros., seed bean merchants of Orbost. This stencil is significant because it was specially made for the seed bean industry which was a major industry in the Orbost district for the first half of the 20th century. Red Cross, CWA, Bowling Club histories in Tawonga and Mt Beauty written for a book, title unknown.The histories of the Red Cross, the Country Women's Association and the bowling clubs in the towns of Tawonga and Mt Beauty are important as the communities in the Kiewa Valley were involved in these organisations for many years from the mid 1940's and in the case of the Tawonga bowling club since 1953. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria supplied First Aid Kits to its employees and 'ran' an ambulance during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme (KHES). The KHES was constructed at the upper end of the Kiewa Valley in the Victorian mountains on the Bogong High Plains. This area is remote with difficult terrain requiring people working and enjoying recreational activities to carry a first aid kit in case of emergency. This First Aid kit is light and portable enabling the user to 'fix' minor injuries and wait for access to medical assistance.This portable first aid kit was owned by a local Mt Beauty resident, Allan S. Clarke who was a long term staff employee for the State Electricity Commission of Victoria.First Aid Outfit (Kit), No.20 by "Sanax". First Aid during WWII was important for the civil population in case of attack or accidents especially in remote communities. This small, slim case was manufactured to contain reading spectacles in a secure but yet "manageable pocket or purse" environment. It was manufactured to contain reading glasses that would not exceed 12mm in thickness. The product was targeting the "professional" reader ie. accountant, lawyer, business and property managers. Because it was made for a "eyesight" specialist to contain "prescription" reading spectacles the quality had to be of a higher level than cheaper "off the shelf" ones. This case was made and used in the late 1800's and early 1900's.This case, for spectacles, holds a significant position in that it points to a time in history when rural Australian families required to travel long distances to obtain professional "eyesight" treatment which, on the whole, were only available in the capital cities (in this case Melbourne). In the pre 1960's, the greater the distance from capital cities for Australian rural folk to seek professional medical, dental, nose ,eye and throat specialists the greater the time involved resulting in the greater expense. This "isolation" brought about increased costs not experienced by city residences. The quality and durability of this case was a pre-requisite for the Kiewa Valley based resident.This slim spring lid spectacle case has a body of light steel over layered by a fine skin dyed(dark brown) leather coating. The inside, of the case, has a 1mm lip opposite the hinged end (to secure the reading spectacles within the case). The inside is fully covered by a "royal" purple felt (to provide the spectacles with a scratch free enclosure).At the outside base in gold lettering "H.B. This book was supplied by the Victorian Education Department for all Grade 5 students at Government schools. Each student had one including the local family who passed it on to another family member. 'Operation Key Hold' was set up in June 1994 to establish a security network whereby (with written permission) members of the public could leave their house key at the Hospital in a safely, locked cupboard to be assessed by approved authority in case of emergency. This is similar to the emergency button (hung around the neck) which sounds an alarm at a central location and alerts appointed acquaintances for assistance - used currently (2015) Operation Key Hold was initiated in Mt Beauty for people at risk of being unable to call for assistance. The letters and notices are examples of setting up a community organisation which began in 1994 locally and became State wide later in the form of a distress alarm which worked by radio contact to a central location. Typed and hand written papers including letters and notices of varying sizes referring to the setting up of 'security network' whereby a house key is left (with written permission) at the Hospital in a safely locked cupboard. Photos were digitized (instead of printed) onto CDs for preservation, easy storage and enabling multiple copies.These photos are a record of the early days of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme including the town of Mt Beauty in the late 1940s to early 1950s Bronwyn Gray inherited these photos of Mt Beauty and the construction of the KHES. Her uncle Ewan Stebbins puchased a piece of furniture from a garage sale in Boston Rd., Torquay in 1981. The developed film were photos of Mt Beauty and surrounding area. He was an SEC employee and knew the area well.Case is hard plastic, black on the back and clear on the front. The Tawonga branch of the Country Women's Association commenced on the 7th February 1946 and often combined activities with the other branches in the Kiewa Valley. Australian Natives' Association was a mutual society founded in Melbourne in April 1871. The last branch closed in 2007 in Western Australia. The Australian - American Association of Victoria was formed in the 1940s for the betterment of relations between Australia and the USA including that in the area of education. The Bogong State School entered many competitions successfully. The Australian Natives' Association supported social well-being which, in this case, involved presenting a book to the Bogong State School in 1949 and 2. Roper's Hut belonged to the Roper family who brought their cattle up onto the Bogong High Plains during summer. Their hut was visited and used by skiers and walkers. The log books kept a record of their visits over the years.The log books gave an insight into the activities of visitors, the weather, the frequency, etc. The case was a safe place for storage of these books.Light brown vinyl case with zip fastener around three sides and partly at the back on each side.
