David Kennedy(1825-1886) was a Scottish singer. Initially a church musician. HE had a large family many of whom were also singers and toured throughout the world. 1872-1876 the group toured Canada, New Zealand and Australia. In 1879 and 1880 they toured India and South Africa. In 1881 three of his children died in a fire at a Nice theatre. David died in South Africa but is buried in Scotland. Handwritten notes on a talk on Mining in Bendigo. Notes are about the Regulation of Mines Act, Jan 1st, 1874. This bill was introduced in the Legislative Assembly on October 16th 1873, by Bendigo's (Sandhurst) Minister for Mines, Angus Mackay and became law on January 1st, 1874. This act made a lot of changes regarding safety in the mines. Some of the mine-owners were not pleased. Handwritten extract from the Bendigo Advertiser 3/1/1874. Regulation in force from 1st January 1874. The 8 diatonic scales bells were cast in London and arrived in Bendigo in 1873, being rung for the first time at Easter 1876. However due to the unsafe nature of the bell tower the bells could only be chimed rather than rung from 1880. In 1963 they were returned to London for recasting and on their return they were installed at a lower level of the bell tower. The Bendigo School of Mines was opened in 1873 to meet the scientific and technical needs of the mining industry on the local gold fields. Mining, chemistry, geology, metallurgy and art were taught. In c.1907 a Junior Technical School commenced to operate at the School of Mines and Industry. This was to enable boys who had completed primary school the opportunity to continue their education and learn skills to assist them in their future.
