Ray Beer was an employee of the Central Deborah Gold Mine. February 15th 2009: Bendigo Advertiser: 'MINING stalwart Raymond Beer has died at the age of 74 after a battle with cancer. He leaves behind an extended family and a legacy in Bendigo’s mining history. Ray was mine manager at the Central Deborah Gold Mine - appointed in 1978 - and led the team that made possible the underground project at the second level. He had a vision to allow visitors to go underground and experience Bendigo’s mining heritage first hand. Ray was responsible for developing the new battery, shaft and poppet head to make this a reality. It took persistence and lots of hard work. Friend and work colleague Bill McNamara said Ray was as good as 10 men. His enthusiasm and work ethic were unprecedented. Ray will be sadly missed by his wife, Thelma, six children, 15 grandchildren, seven brothers, three sisters, his extended family, and friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, tenacity and strength of character. In recognition of his contribution to Bendigo’s mining history, after more than 20 years of service at his retirement, a bronze life-sized statue was unveiled in his honour'. The Bendigo Trust was then formed to oversee the operations of the Central Deborah Gold Mine, which led to the surface of the mine being opened to the public in 1971. The Napoleon main shaft, (about 1700 feet south of the old Napoleon shaft) will be a four compartment shaft (17ft 6 inches by ft 2 inches inside the timber). aLevels will be opened at approximately 100 ft vertical intervals and cross-cuts extended approximately 125 ft each side of centre country to explore a cross-section across the anticline opposite to the shaft. At every fifth level, main drives will be extended north to connect with the old Napoleon shaft and south approximately 1800 ft. At the latter point, another cross-section of the anticline will be explored by rising and cross-cutting. The old Napoleon will be unwatered and on the 500ft and 1000 ft levels main drives will be driven to connect with main levels from the Napoleon main shaft to the south as well as being driven north 1800 ft where another cross-section of the anticline will be explored. Cross-sections further north and south may be developed as desired and also at intermediate points if necessary. Clearing and grading of the main shaft site are now in progress and the erection of the office and store building is proceeding. The design of engine room, change house and machine shops is now in hand and erection will proceed as soon as working plans and specifications are prepared.' At the base of the paddock on the northern side is a concrete winding engine foundation measuring 8 by 4 feet, and standing 2 feet high. The foundation has ¾-inch mounting bolts. Battery site 70 metres to the west of the mine site are the concrete foundations of a 10head battery. The foundations measure 16 by 11 feet, and stand 4 feet high. Part of the battery's loading ramp still survives, and on the eastern side of the battery foundations is a large concrete engine foundation. Near this engine foundation is a 3 foot square concrete pad, which still retains a circular impression. Presumably this was a stand for a gas producer cylinder. Located between the battery and the mine site is a rubbish dump which contains sections of an iron stack, and perhaps the remains of the gas producer cylinder. Albert Richardson was a past President of the Bendigo Historical Society. He had a great interest in the history of the Bendigo goldfield. A reserve in Marong Road, adjoining Victoria Hill mine precint, is named in honour of Albert and his contribution to recording the mining history of Bendigo. In this document, Albert has listed some early mines on the New Chum reefline. The Garibaldi Gold Mining Company, near the corner of Rose and Mackenzie Streets, Bendigo, was listed in the Victorian Government Gazettes on October 26th, 1860. Gazette 136 Page 2035. All the shareholders gave their place of residence as either Swanston or Collins Street, Melbourne. Bonati's Gold Mining Company was gazetted on 13th January, 1871 Gazette 2 Page 55. Carl Mueller was the Manager of the Company, which was situated on the 'New Chum Reef, Bendigo'. The three transcribed letters, numbers five, six and seven, are from a series of letters written by John Heithfield Wroth Pettit, 1852 - 1868, to his father in England. Letters five, six and seven are written mainly from the Forest Creek diggings at Castlemaine but also describe his time on the Bendigo goldfield. The full set of Pettit's letters describe his journey out to Australia on the 'Atrevida', his arrival, journey to the diggings, tools and methods used to search for gold during 1853 and his later life experiences working with roads and bridges, primarily in Gippsland area. In October 1854 John Pettit settled at Tarraville where he was employed as a superintendent of works connected with Roads and Bridges, later he set up privately as an architect, builder, land surveyor until September 1856, when he was appointed Assistant Surveyor in the Survey Department in which capacity he selected up a new line of road to the Omeo diggings and laid out townships. In 1862 he set up a business in Sale, Gippsland, as an architect/surveyor (Gippsland Times, 5th September, 1862, page 3). Letters from October 1854 to September 1856 give some information on the people, social life, opossum and kangaroo hunting, mustering cattle etc. Letters after 1856 mainly describe the country, methods of work and life led. Vocabularies of the Omeo, Norradyeree and Gippsland tribes c 1859 and a list of names of places, rivers and more, in the language of various un-named tribes in Gippsland c1857 occupy pages 148 – 162. He was particularly interested in the mining history of the region and wrote extensively on the mines on the Bendigo field.
