Booklet, Introducing the Properties Underbank and Parwan Park offering on account of Mr Sol Green
Solomon (Sol) Green was a major bookmaker, businessman, real estate investor, racehorse owner and trainer, and philanthropist. His connection to Bacchus Marsh was through his ownership of the Underbank Stud property which he purchased in 1924. He also owned the Parwan Park property for some time. Both of these properties were put up for sale in 1947 just a year before the death of Sol Green in 1948.Stapled printed softcover booklet. 20 pages. 200mm x 290mm. Book, Ringing the Bell!: Celebrating 100 years of Service - Bacchus Marsh Urban Fire Brigade - Brigade no 14028
This book records the story of the Bacchus Marsh Urban Fire Brigade. A fire brigade began in Bacchus Marsh in 1911 when fire fighters used horses and carts for transportation, and their equipment included buckets, beaters and knapsacks. Later developments included a 'motor pump' truck acquired in 1931 and locally made Waldon radio sets introduced in 1961. This work traces the evolution of the fire brigade service in Bacchus from those early times through to the early 2000s. This pamphlet outlines the early history of the house constructed for William Bacchus in 1846-1847 and briefly describes its condition as it was in 1957. William Bacchus was one of the first European colonists to live in the area in which a township (Bacchus Marsh) was later named after him. He arrived on land occupied by the Wurundjeri and Wadawurrung peoples in 1838 and established a large sheep farm. Between 1846 and 1847 he contracted builders and other skilled workers to construct a large brick and stone two storey house. William Bacchus died in 1849. His son Henry Bacchus sold the house in 1851. For many years it was owned by the Crook family. When this pamphlet was published in 1957 the house was owned by the Lifeguard Milk Company of Bacchus Marsh. By this time the property had become derelict and was almost demolished. Around this time the Young Mens Christian Association Club in Bacchus Marsh became involved in efforts to help preserve this historic property. This pamphlet was part of those efforts.
