... Boarding School Beach at Port Fairy......boarding school beach...The scene is of Boarding School Beach at Port Fairy and of bathing boxes on the stone reef....Photograph Boarding School Beach at Port Fairy ...Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 23 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. In the 1920s, the photographer travelled throughout Victoria, including on the west coast from Port Campbell to Port Fairy. Trips were presumably made by train and by foot. Lynda Tieman and her team at the Port Fairy Historical Society were able to identify a number of Henry Christian's photographs of Port Fairy, of which this is one. The scene is of Boarding School Beach at Port Fairy and of bathing boxes on the stone reef.henry beater christian (1886-1962), landscape photography, christian-washfold collection, photograph albums, port fairy (vic.), boarding school beach -

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and VillageBook - Fiction, Oxford University Press, That Boarding School Girl, 1926
... That Boarding School Girl......that boarding school girl...That Boarding School Girl Author: Dorita Fairlie Bruce Publisher: Oxford University Press Date: 1926 The front cover and the page opposite the fly page have drawn and coloured illustrations. ...The book, “That Boarding School Girl” by Dorita Fairlie Bruce, represents an example of literature accessible to older girls during the early 20th century. ...Sylvia Jean Veronica McCullagh Barr (1914–1998) was a student at the Presbyterian Sabbath School in Dennington, near Warrnambool. In December 1930, she received a book as an award from F. Jones, the Sabbath School Superintendent, recognising her involvement and achievements at the school. Sylvia was the granddaughter of James McCullagh (1831–1911) and Elizabeth Eccles (1831–1909), a pioneering couple in the region. Married in 1856, James and Elizabeth settled at Oak Grove, Yangery, Illowa from 1859, where they lived until their deaths. One of James and Elizabeth’s sons, William McCullagh (1873–1940), married Margaret Jane Russell (1879–1981). William and Margaret also made their home at Oak Grove and raised eleven children there, including Sylvia. The book, “That Boarding School Girl” by Dorita Fairlie Bruce, represents an example of literature accessible to older girls during the early 20th century. It was specifically selected as an end-of-year award, recognising consistent attendance at Sabbath School. Such choices highlight the role of books in supporting the educational and moral development of young women during this period. The book is important as a connection to the early township of Dennington, a community distinguished by its established school and church. This association reflects the values the community placed on education and religious instruction. The book’s significance is further enhanced by its relationship with colonial pioneer families in Australia, particularly those from Victoria and the Warrnambool district in southwest Victoria. It is a tangible link to the history and legacy of these early settlers, who were instrumental in shaping the regional development. That Boarding School Girl Author: Dorita Fairlie Bruce Publisher: Oxford University Press Date: 1926 The front cover and the page opposite the fly page have drawn and coloured illustrations. The cloth-covered, hardcover book includes black and white illustrations and coloured illustrations on the front cover and frontispiece. The front cover illustration shows a teenage irl in a school tunic, standing beside a piano with one hand on the backrest of a tilted chair. Inscriptions are printed on the front loose endpaper and handwritten on the fly page. The book belonged to Sylvia McCullagh. It was awarded to her as a prize in 1930.Handwritten on the top of the fly page: "Sylvia McCullagh Den" [ Den - abbreviation for Dennington] " Presbyterian Sabbath School, Dennington. She was sent to boarding school while her parents travelled on a grand tour around Europe in 1956, using money they received inherited from the sale of Godfrey Hirst's establishment. ...This blanket belonged to Wendy Hirst, great-granddaughter of Godfrey Hirst. It was gifted to her and has remained in the family until its donation to the National Wool Museum by Wendy's daughter. The blanket is part of a special Godfrey Hirst collection created for the princesses - Princess Margaret, Princess Elizabeth and the Duchess of Kent. This particular piece is known as the Duchess of Kent blanket. Beyond it's royal connection, the blanket holds deep family meaning. Wendy used it throughout her childhood, including during her time at boarding school at Morongo Girls College. She was sent to boarding school while her parents travelled on a grand tour around Europe in 1956, using money they received inherited from the sale of Godfrey Hirst's establishment. The blanket has naturally developed signs of wear and tear, showing just how well loved and well used it has been over the decades. It also still has its name tag sewn in, as required by Morongo Girls College, with 'Wendy Hirst' written on it, an intimate detail that ties this remarkable piece of history firmly to her own life and childhood.Burgundy, red, green and pale blue tartan blanket with fringed edges.Printed [label]: WENDY HIRSTgodfrey hirst & co. pty. ltd., godfrey hirst, wendy hirst, duchess of kent, princess, royals, childhood, boarding school, blanket, morongo girls college -

They had backgrounds in teaching and office work. As nuns, their contributions to the community included teaching, running camps, being there for community members wishing to talk to them or pray, and visiting prisons and hospitals. During their time in the order, the role of the nuns in Beechworth shifted due to the closing down of the Priory School, and changes in where housing for nuns was provided. The oral history also includes stories of boarding at the convent in the 1950s, and reflections on how the experience of being a nun has changed due to increasing immersion in the modern world, and the move from convent to house. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Sister Elizabeth McGovern, Sister Mary Lacey, Sister Mary Griffiths, and Sister Gerardus Thistlewaite's interview with Jennifer Williams is revealing of the history of the Brigidine order in Beechworth, and the role religion and nuns played in the wellbeing, education, and life of the community in the latter half of the twentieth century. It is significant both for what it illustrates about the lives and motivation of the Sisters, and for what it tells us about how the role of religious education and figures shifted in Beecjhworth from 1950 onward. It is especially illuminating about the experience of women in education. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved. This is a series of digital recordings that were originally recorded on multiple cassette tapes. The cassette tapes are black with a horizontal white strip and are currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. They describe growing up in Beechworth, living a fairly well-off life compared to others around them. Mrs Martina in particular talks about going to school, becoming a teacher, and helping to set up Beechworth Secondary School. She talks briefly about gender roles for girls in the classroom and how teaching has changed over time. Mrs Hill and Mrs Martina describe the Beechworth community as friendly, including towards migrants, and suggest they were not particularly involved in political movements except for protesting after the dismissal of the Whitlam Government. They discuss visiting the Albury Show. The sisters briefly discuss 'them pushing the wheelbarrow to Mt Buffalo'. This refers to a publicised wager between garage proprietor Tom Parkinson and Post Office Hotel licensee Tony Evans in 1935. Evans challenged Parkinson to push him in a wheelbarrow for over 80km (with an elevation of 1000m) from the Beechworth Post Office to Mt Buffalo in just eight days, with the winner awarded twenty pounds. A brochure was published with official rules, and the incident made international news in the New York Times. They briefly discussed that their parents worked at the 'Mental Hospital', the full name of which was the Mayday Hills Mental Hospital, known at other points as the Beechworth Asylum and the Beechworth Hospital for the Insane. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke. The statement captures a personal perspective on the teaching profession and education at rural schools during the mid-twentieth century, with a focus on the experience of young girls and women going to school. It specifically discusses the establishment of Beechworth Secondary School. Mrs Hill and Mrs Martina also provide insights into the social dynamics of the town, as two girls from a well-off family discuss how they believed people from different backgrounds interacted with one another. The interview also puts Beechworth into a wider social context, as the women discuss how they were perceived when they went to College and how they interacted with wider politics. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.'
