For decades, Victorian state schools organised annual excursions to the Royal Melbourne Show, especially from the 1950s through the 1990s. These trips were so common that many former students remember them as a defining part of the school year. The Royal Melbourne Show wasn’t just rides and showbags, it was originally promoted as an educational agricultural exhibition. Schools attended because the Show offered: - Agricultural demonstrations - Livestock judging - Wool, dairy, and grain displays - Machinery and industry exhibits - Food production and rural‑skills education - Displays by government departments and civic organisations For many urban students, it was their only direct exposure to rural industries. From the late 1990s onward, several factors reduced school excursions to the Show: - Rising transport and supervision costs - Curriculum tightening - Increased risk‑management requirements - Shift toward museum, science, and cultural excursions - The end of the Show Day public holiday Some schools still attend, but it’s no longer the near‑universal tradition it once was. Many students who attended the Melbourne Show excursions will remember holding onto a rope as shown in this photograph.5372 - Braybrook State School Excursion To The Melbourne Show C1958 Photograph.jpgbraybrook state school, ballarat road, braybrook

Braybrook State School opened in 1873, replacing the old Albion No. 6 School that was located in Duke Street, Albion (Now Sunshine North). The school grew from a small bluestone rural school into one of the largest primary schools in Melbourne’s West, peaking at 811 students in 1960, before closing in 2008 and being demolished after a 2010 arson attack. In 1970, the school’s official name changed from Braybrook State School to Braybrook Primary School, following statewide naming reforms. In 2007, the school merged with Sunshine East Primary School and Sunvale Primary School to form Sunshine Harvester Primary School. In 2008, Braybrook Primary School officially closed and in 2009, the Braybrook campus ceased operation as part of Sunshine Harvester Primary School. In 2010, the former school buildings were destroyed by arson. The site buildings were rebuilt and today, they are occupied by the Rosamond School (specialist school), which has relocated from Rosamond Road, Maidstone. These photographs are of the Braybrook State School brick building that was built in 1925, replacing the original 1873 bluestone schoolhouse.braybrook state school, ballarat road, braybrook

Braybrook Junction State School was the original name for what later became Sunshine State School and then Sunshine Primary School (School No. 3113), one of the earliest formal educational institutions in the district. The school opened in 1891 on the corner of Hampshire Road and Morris Street, but enrolments grew so quickly that the building became inadequate within months. The first head teacher was Mr Thomas Flynn. Later in 1891, the school was relocated to the Braybrook Public Hall, at the north‑east corner of Hampshire Road & Benjamin Street. In 1892, the Education Department selected a rented site in Derby Road and the school moved there on 30th September 1892. The buildings consisted of two portable classrooms joined by a porch—a common solution for fast‑growing industrial suburbs. This list details the names of children of many of the early settlers of Braybrook Junction.Adam, Mary  Adam, Thomas  Allen, Hugh  Batchelor, Jessie  Batchelor, John  Batchelor, Margaret  Beck, John  Beck, Leonard  Bostock, Kate  Brown, Elise  Byrne, Elizabeth  Byrne, Margaret  Byrne, Mary  Catherall, Alice  Catherall, Lily  Chivers, Amy  Chivers, Emily  Davey, Albert  Davey, John  Davey, Mary  Davey, William  Dickson, Herbert  Dickson, Matilda  Ellis, ?  Ellis, ?  Ellis, ?  Ellis, ?  Flynn, John  Flynn, Rosetta Flynn, Thomas Eugene (Head Teacher) Gamble, Ethel  Gamble, Herbert  Gamble, Lily  Girling, George  Graf, Ruby  Grant, Grace  Grant, William  Hamilton, Ronald  Hamilton, Thomas  Hardwick, Gerald  Hardwick, Guy  Heinrichs, Albert  Heinrichs, Archie  Ingle, Mary  Jones, David  Jones, Louisa  Jones, Victor  Laing, Alice  Laing, William  Lancashire, Edith  Lancashire, John  Lancashire, Lavinia  Lohse, Ellen  Lovelock, Ellen  McKeirney, Bella  Montell, Ernest  O'Shannassy, Mary  Patterson, Edward  Patterson, William  Paul, Bella  Porter, Frederick  Porter, Leonard  Price, Kate  Price, William  Reade, Alfred  Reade, Florence  Readle, Wesley  Richardson, Alex  Richardson, George  Richardson, Lily  Richardson, Violet  Rose, James  Scott, Aiston  Scott, Walter  Shorten, Elizabeth  Shorten, James  Shorten, Jeremiah  Shorten, Mary  Standish, Margaret  Torr, William  Ungle, Frederick  Weinsberg, Samuel  Weinsberg, William  braybrook junction state school, hampshire road, sunshine, thomas flynn, john flynn

Thomas Flynn, Head Teacher of State School 1102, Braybrook compiled this account. It appears to have been handwritten by pupils and bears some corrections in black presumably made by Flynn. There are more corrections, this time in red ink. It is highly likely that these corrections were made by L. Kepert in 1928. The book remained in Braybrook State School for many years. It is believed to have come to Sunshine & District Historical Society through Evan Pincus, founder of the Society,History of Braybrook District compiled by Thomas Flynn Head Teacher of Braybrook State School No 1102 September 1906braybrook, history, thomas flynn, braybrook state school

Rev. John Flynn, the head of the Presbyterian Inland Mission and the founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, attended the Sunshine and Braybrook State Schools. His father, Thomas Flynn, was the head teacher at the Braybrook and Braybrook Junction State Schools. Thomas and his family lived in Clarke Street, Sunshine. The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is one of Australia’s most iconic and important institutions. It provides aeromedical retrieval, emergency care, and primary health services to people living in rural and remote Australia — places where medical help would otherwise be hours or days away.Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia Video A Mantle of Safety, from small beginnings in 1928, the Royal Flying Doctor Service has grown to become the largest, most comprehensive aeromedical service in the world. The Service has grown from the dream of Rev. Dr. John Flynn who dreamt of bringing medical help to people living in Australia's vast Outback. Today, John Flynn's Mantle of Safety covers more than 80% of Australia, bringing vital health care to people who live, work and travel in remote and rural Australia. As well as emergency services, the RFDS provides a comprehensive health service through medical clinics and trains health care professionals. This video shows the work of the RFDS NSW Section whose work extends John Flynn's Mantle of Safety right across Victoria, NSW, Tasmania and part of Queensland and South Australia, covering an area the size of Western Europe. The lifesaving work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service would not be possible without the support the Service receives from State and Commonwealth Governments, businesses and the wider community.royal flying doctor, john flynn

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991, are of the Sunshine Primary School (Sunshine State School) 100th anniversary reunion. Sunshine State School (No. 3113), established in 1891 at Braybrook Junction, Sunshine State School is one of the district’s earliest educational institutions. The school operated from several temporary sites before relocating to Derby Road in 1892 and adopting the name Sunshine State School in 1907. Continuous population growth driven by local industry led to repeated expansions, including new classrooms in 1905, 1911 and 1919. In 1931 the school moved into a new brick building on Hampshire Road, constructed on the former Braybrook Junction Post Office site. Throughout the twentieth century the school remained a central part of Sunshine’s civic life, reflecting the suburb’s industrial development and growing community. Today the School still provides primary education to the children of Central Sunshine.7378.01 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 52.2).JPG 7378.02 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 52.2).JPG 7378.03 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 52.2).JPG 7378.04 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 52.2).JPG 7378.05 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 52.2).JPG 7378.06 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 52.2).JPG 7378.07 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 52.2).JPG 7378.08 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 52.2).JPG 7378.09 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 194.3).JPG 7378.10 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 194.3).JPG 7378.11 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 194.3).JPG 7378.12 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 194.3).JPG 7378.13 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 194.3).JPG 7378.14 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 194.3).JPG 7378.15 - Sunshine Primary School 100 Years Reunion 1991 Photographs (Advocate 194.3).JPGsunshine state school, sunshine primary school, hampshire road, sunshine

Deer Park State School began in 1874 as State School 1434 Braybrook but soon the school became known as the Derrimut on Kororoit Creek State School. This was soon shortened to Kororoit State School The Kororoit State School and was renamed to the Deer Park State School in 1890 when the local area's name was changed from Kororoit Creek to Deer Park. The school suffered several dramatic events due to its proximity to the ICI explosives factory. These events included the windows being blown out after lightning struck the ICI factory, the ceiling collapsed after an explosion at the ICI factory, and a fire destroyed the school in 1942. The 1940's rebuild of the school included a new red brick building with bluestone detailed used from the original building. The new building matched Percy Everett’s Education Department architectural style of the era. This school was relocated to Cairnlea in 2007 and became known as the Cairnlea Park Primary School. The old 1943–44 red‑brick main building (rebuilt after the 1942 fire), the blue stone remnants and the school grounds are now protected under Brimbank’s Heritage Overlay (HO84).These photographs capture the original blue stone school building, the damaged caused by the 1942 fire and the 1943–44 replacement red‑brick main building.5343.01 - Deer Park State School Photo 01.jpg 5343.02 - Deer Park State School Photo 02.jpg 5343.03 - Deer Park State School 1942 Fire Photo 03.jpg 5343.04 - Deer Park State School 1942 Fire Photo 04.jpg 5343.05 - Deer Park State School 1942 Fire Photo 05.jpg 5343.06 - Deer Park State School 1942 Fire Photo 06.jpg 5343.07 - Deer Park State School Photo 07.jpg 5343.08 - Deer Park State School Photo 08.jpg 5343.09 - Deer Park State School Photo 09.jpg 5343.10 - Deer Park State School Photo 10.jpg 5343.11 - Deer Park State School Photo 11.jpg 5343.12 - Deer Park State School Photo 12.jpg 5343.13 - Deer Park State School Photo 13.jpg 5343.14 - Deer Park State School Photo 14.jpg 5343.15 - Deer Park State School Photo 15.jpg 5343.16 - Deer Park State School Photo 16.jpgdeer park state school, ballarat road, deer park, hume and hovell cairn

Tottenham North State School opened in 1953 on South Road, Braybrook and operated for 40 years before closing in 1993. The school was built to serve the rapidly growing post war housing estates of Braybrook, Tottenham, and Maidstone. The school relieved pressure on the nearby Footscray West State School and Tottenham State School (later Tottenham Primary School). In 1970, the Victorian Education Department standardised naming with the term “State School” being replaced by “Primary School”, thus the school became Tottenham North Primary School. The school later merged with Tottenham Primary School to form Tottenham Crossing Primary School, and in the 2010’s eventually became part of Dinjerra Primary School.5336.01 - Tottenham North State School - Library Lunch Time Book Loans Photo 01.jpg 5336.02 - Tottenham North State School - Children Using Library Catalogue Photo 02.jpg 5336.03 - Tottenham North State School - Children In Library Photo 03.jpgtottenham state school, south road, braybrook

The St. Albans State School, now the St. Albans Primary School opened in 1889 and is one of the oldest continuously operating schools in Melbourne’s western suburbs. The school was founded by early farming families shortly after the suburb itself was created by Alfred Padley and the Cosmopolitan Land & Banking Co. around the railway line. Local families needed a permanent school to replace informal or church-based teaching arrangements and this school was built. St. Albans grew dramatically after WWII due to migrant settlement and with industrial expansion in Sunshine, Tottenham, and Braybrook. The school was expanded with additional classrooms, specialist rooms (art, library, music) and larger playgrounds and assembly areas. By the 1960s–70s, the state School was a major multicultural school serving a rapidly growing suburb. For more than a century, the school has been central to migrant education, local civic life, community events and fetes The school has tight partnerships with the St. Albans High School and other local institutions. The school remains one of the longest running institutions in the district. The school was expanded with additional classrooms, specialist rooms (art, library, music) and larger playgrounds and assembly areas.
