For decades, Victorian state schools organised annual excursions to the Royal Melbourne Show, especially from the 1950s through the 1990s. These trips were so common that many former students remember them as a defining part of the school year. The Royal Melbourne Show wasn’t just rides and showbags, it was originally promoted as an educational agricultural exhibition. Schools attended because the Show offered: - Agricultural demonstrations - Livestock judging - Wool, dairy, and grain displays - Machinery and industry exhibits - Food production and rural‑skills education - Displays by government departments and civic organisations For many urban students, it was their only direct exposure to rural industries. Braybrook Junction State School was the original name for what later became Sunshine State School and then Sunshine Primary School (School No. 3113), one of the earliest formal educational institutions in the district. The school opened in 1891 on the corner of Hampshire Road and Morris Street, but enrolments grew so quickly that the building became inadequate within months. The first head teacher was Mr Thomas Flynn. Later in 1891, the school was relocated to the Braybrook Public Hall, at the north‑east corner of Hampshire Road & Benjamin Street. In 1892, the Education Department selected a rented site in Derby Road and the school moved there on 30th September 1892. Thomas Flynn, Head Teacher of State School 1102, Braybrook compiled this account. It appears to have been handwritten by pupils and bears some corrections in black presumably made by Flynn. There are more corrections, this time in red ink. It is highly likely that these corrections were made by L. Kepert in 1928. The book remained in Braybrook State School for many years. Rev. John Flynn, the head of the Presbyterian Inland Mission and the founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, attended the Sunshine and Braybrook State Schools. His father, Thomas Flynn, was the head teacher at the Braybrook and Braybrook Junction State Schools. Thomas and his family lived in Clarke Street, Sunshine.The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is one of Australia’s most iconic and important institutions. Gladys Maissie "Mace" Babb (b28/10/1889 d22/1/1982) married George Napier Myers (b29/10/1879 d23/9/1948) in 1912 in Victoria. Mace was the daughter of James Babb, a pioneer of Braybrook who worked as a caretaker and road contractor. This was soon shortened to Kororoit State School The Kororoit State School and was renamed to the Deer Park State School in 1890 when the local area's name was changed from Kororoit Creek to Deer Park. The school suffered several dramatic events due to its proximity to the ICI explosives factory. These events included the windows being blown out after lightning struck the ICI factory, the ceiling collapsed after an explosion at the ICI factory, and a fire destroyed the school in 1942. The 1940's rebuild of the school included a new red brick building with bluestone detailed used from the original building. The new building matched Percy Everett’s Education Department architectural style of the era. This school was relocated to Cairnlea in 2007 and became known as the Cairnlea Park Primary School. Tottenham North State School opened in 1953 on South Road, Braybrook and operated for 40 years before closing in 1993. The school was built to serve the rapidly growing post war housing estates of Braybrook, Tottenham, and Maidstone. The school relieved pressure on the nearby Footscray West State School and Tottenham State School (later Tottenham Primary School). In 1970, the Victorian Education Department standardised naming with the term “State School” being replaced by “Primary School”, thus the school became Tottenham North Primary School. The St. Albans State School, now the St. Albans Primary School opened in 1889 and is one of the oldest continuously operating schools in Melbourne’s western suburbs. The school was founded by early farming families shortly after the suburb itself was created by Alfred Padley and the Cosmopolitan Land & Banking Co. around the railway line. Local families needed a permanent school to replace informal or church-based teaching arrangements and this school was built. St. Albans grew dramatically after WWII due to migrant settlement and with industrial expansion in Sunshine, Tottenham, and Braybrook. The school was expanded with additional classrooms, specialist rooms (art, library, music) and larger playgrounds and assembly areas. By the 1960s–70s, the state School was a major multicultural school serving a rapidly growing suburb. For more than a century, the school has been central to migrant education, local civic life, community events and fetes The school has tight partnerships with the St. Albans High School and other local institutions. The school remains one of the longest running institutions in the district.
