The phtograph was taken by Alfred Sinel who was the local photgrapher in Sunbury. The four arched bridge spans the river at Deep Creek, Bulla. The bridge replaced the forde crossing which is in the foreground of the photograph. 'Glenara' is the homestead, which is situated in the Deep Creek valley at Bulla. It was the home of Walter Clark, who moved from NSW to Victoria in 1853 and purchased land on the banks of Deep Creek. Four years later in 1857 his homestead was completed. In the same year Bulla Racing Club held its first annual meet on the property. Later that year, Alister Clark purchased the homestead from the family estate and began developing an extensive rose garden on his property. The original swing bridge was built across the Deep Creek in 1854 to allow the Daniel family to visit the Dickens sisters. The photograph is of the Woodland Homestead at Bulla which was sited along the Moonee Ponds Creek. William Pomroy Greene and his wife Anne, emigrated from Scotland and arrived in the Port Phillip area in December 1842.. He acquired the Crown land at Gellibrand Hill in 1843 and built the prefabricated homestead which became known as Woodlands. The people in the photograph, taken about 1859 - 60, are L- R: Possibly Sir Willian Stawell, ?, little Anne Catherine Greene at 2 years, Rawdon Greene, Mrs. Greene and Smith ( a butler).The Greene family were one of the early European settlers to acquire land in the Bulla Bulla district. The settlement is Bulla township, which attracted Europeans in the 1840s. The bluestone building on the RHS was one of the early hotels in the town but was the Post Office and store until it was destroyed by fire in the 1980s. The school is visible behind a clump of trees in the valley. The road in the foreground is the former Bulla Road, which in the 1850s carried traffic to the Bendigo goldfields. The creek is the Deep Creek which flows into the Maribyrnong River further downstream. In the early days of European settlement, minerals were obtained in the valley at Bulla. In 1988 the students from Grades 4 -6 had a sleep-over at Bulla Primary School. The purpose of the sleep-over was to organise the children in construction sign from white painted rocks on the hillside overlooking the school. The sign was 'BULLA' and was clearly visible from the approaching road into the Bulla township. The Bulla Primary School was holding a sports day where all students participated in a varied choice of events. It took place on in the school grounds. The egg and spoon race was one of the traditional events included in school sports programs.The sports day was part of the physical education program included in the curriculum. St. Mary's Anglican Church at Bulla originally occupied a site along Oaklands Road, adjacent to 'Woodlands' homestead. It was established in 1859. With the building of the Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine it was found that the church on its existing site was directly under the flight path and subject to possible damage from vibrations caused by the aircraft. As a result the historic building was demolished stone by stone and rebuilt in the Bulla township adjacent to the Alistair Clark Rose Garden. The original site has not been developed because some early graves are there.St. Mary's Church at Bulla is one of the earliest to be established in the Bulla district. The building in the image is the former Friendly Societies Hotel which was in Bulla and run by the Kelly family. St.Andrew's Presbyterian Church at Bulla was built on Crown land that the congregation received on 6th September 1858. It overlooks Oaklands Road and the surrounding farms as well as the Tullamarine Airport. The building at the rear is the former manse. It functioned as a place of worship for over 150 years and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2009. Some of the students from Bulla Primary School were taken to the local recreation ground to meet the former councillor, Pauline De Luca, who was there to 'turn the first sod at the site'. The work was done by the former Bulla Shire Council on the Bulla Community Centre. The Shire President, Bert Kelly attended the Bulla State School to celebrate the Back to Bulla day. The photograph was printed for a historic display at the Bulla Primary School. The children in the photograph who were past pupils of the Bulla State School are Eric Lewis Grant, who was born on 10th September in 1889 and died on 26th March 1969 and Harold Bruce Grant, born 2nd December 1891 and died on 21 December 1934. Further information states that they were 'Ossie's uncles', who was also an old Bulla resident. Bulla State School was one of the earliest schools to be established in the nineteenth century. Councillor Pauline DeLuca was driving the grader and 'turning the first sod' at the beginning of the upgrade work that was done on the Bulla Community Centre. She was the councillor who represented that area in the former Shire of Bulla. The students from Bulla Primary School were taken on a nature excursion to a nearby nature park as part of their scientific and environmental studies. They were studying the number and types of insects that could be found in the plants and water in the area. The park ranger then asked them to identify any insects on the chart that they found. A few little privately run schools were set up in Bulla township from the late 1850s before Bulla State School No.46 was built and opened on 25th November 1870. It was a bluestone building with a slate roof and an extra weatherboard classroom was built later. The school was built at the end of School Lane near Deep Creek. A swing Bridge was built across the creek to give pupils quicker access to school. The school functioned until December 1996 when it closed and the property was sold and became a private residence.Bulla State School No.46 was one of the earliest government school to be established in the district and functioned in the original building for 126 years until it was closed. The former blue-stone Bulla Store and Post Office was damaged by fire in September 1992. Unfortunately it was not restored despite its heritage listing and the fire-damaged building was finally demolished. The Fanning Family home, 'Sunnyside', was built in Loemans Road after William Patrick Fanning migrated from Thurles, Co Tipperary, Ireland. He was one of the early farmers in Bulla. He and his wife, Catherine had five children. Since he and his wife died their descendants continued to live at 'Sunnyside' in Bulla. The champagne glass was used to commemorate the opening of the new Shire of Bulla Council Offices in 1966.
