Rev. Thomas Hastie was the first Presbyterian minister in Buninyong, serving for 44 years to 1891. He is buried in the Buninyong Cemetery. The folio includes a family tree, genealogical and historical notes and original booklets from the centenary and 125th anniversary commemorations of the Buninyong Presbyterian Church. Former Presbyterian church built in 1860, with foundation stone laid by Mrs Scott, snr, the oldest resident in the district on Tuesday 27th March 1860. In 1970 the congregations of the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches combined to form the Buninyong United Church. This snuff horn belonged to the Rev. Thomas Hastie, pioneering Presbyterian minister at Buninyong from 1847 to 1898. It was presented to the Society by his great grand-daughter in 2010.This item is historically significant for its connection with an important figure in the history of Buninyong, who was also a notable figure in the Free Presbyterian Church in Victoria in the 19th Century.A brown snuff horn, made of ivory, with a silver band and inlaid silver decoration on the lid. Part of a photographic record of Buninyong township. The buildings range from 1960s back to 1896, 1887, 1866, to a remnant of 1855, hidden within the shop of D. Brown electrician, consequently reflecting much alteration and change when compared to earlier photos.The streetscape is of historic significance, recording the detail of the streetscape in 1993. Thomas Hastie was the first Presbyterian minister of Buninyong and started the first school in Buninyong in 1848. In 1860 Scottish settlers commissioned the Presbyterian church in Buninyong and the foundation stone was laid in March 1860 by Mrs. Celia Scott of "Mount Boninyong" one of the earliest settlers in the district. In 1971 the church combined with the Methodist Church to form the Buninyong United Church and then in 1977 became part of the Uniting Church of Australia.This church represents the impact of Scottish settlers in the district and their emphasis on religion and education, many of the church's fine stained glass windows depict depict various members of the Scott family and the Rev.
