This photograph is featured in the Museum's March 2022 issue of Bellcord - page 10 which provided the story of A C F Lewellin Mechanic located in the building behind the tram. A cable tram set, including trailer 126, is stationary with gripman and conductor standing on the roadway next to the dummy. From the names on the rear, they may have been related. The tram is facing north in Chapel St outside the depot just north of Carlise St. A cable tram Dummy can be glimpsed behind. The destination shows 'St Kilda Rd' which suggests this after truncation of the Prahan line in Domain Road. The uniforms and car livery are those of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board. c1926. The car in M&MTB livery carries the number 1 with destination Richmond. This tram set is now preserved at Museum's Victoria having once been enclosed in a glass case in Russell Street at the rear of the then National Museum of Victoria. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of the cable tram track at the intersection of Smith Street and Gertrude St Fitzroy, 1954/55. Photo shows the workmen excavating and demolishing parts of the massive infrastructure needed at this curve to enable cable trams to pass around the sharp curve, still one of the sharpest on today's Melbourne tram system. The outside cable tram track remains in position. The MMBW plan shows a large cable sheave pit on the outside of the curve. The 1955 Annual Report notes that work commenced following the completion of the Queen's visit in March 1954 and that all work was done by day-labour. The track was opened to service in late June 1955. At the time the building was occupied by A P Sutherland, tyre retreaders. Has an advert for Michelin tyres. Photo early 1960s based on the motor vehicles, photographer unknown. They were used by the cable trams until the mid-1920s when they were phased out and replaced by "flimsy" paper tickets. The item has been punched many times. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of the cable tram track at an un-identified location, showing the removal of the yokes and track where two cable lines crossed over each other. Shows the former cable tram yokes that supported the slot rails and some details of the cable tunnels and pits. The man in the bottom left could be cutting the yokes with an oxy-acetylene cutting torch. In the view are at the top of the photo some rails can be seen. There were a number of points where the cable tram crossed other electric or cable tram lines. Given the small work site and men involved the location could potentially be either Johnston Street and Smith Street or Johnston St and Nicholson Street. The second image is from a Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works plan (part) No. 1217 - Collingwood for the intersection, obtained for reference from the State Library of Victoria Collection of MMBW Plans. It shows the layout of the cables and the large sheave pit that the cable itself passed around. The trams were required to drop the cable from the grip prior to the entry to the curve and then coast around.
