This is a set of 40 photographs of 4th Field Survey Squadron undergoing adventurous training at Mount Remarkable National Park, South Australia in May 1987. It is evident the training focussed on teamwork, leadership, abseiling, rock climbing, field craft and living off the land survival skills. Elements from units of the Army Reserve also participated in the training. There are 2 slouch hats and 2 peak caps. The Corporal in front centre is wearing leather leggings and is seated on a box stamped "Cockatoo Jams". 10. Full length portrait of a Staff Sergeant. Enlisted 24 August 1940 at Caulfield, Vic. Discharged 13 Sept 1945. He was captured at Tobruk in 1941. Listed as a POW on 26 .6.41, and sent to Capua, Italy on 1.1.42. Escaped to Yugoslavia 23.10.42 and recaptured 27.10.42. Transferred to Stalag 18A (Wolfsberg, Austria) 28.12.1943 after Italian Armistice. Released to UK 4.8.1945. 2. Letter from Mary Williams to son Albert Williams dated 22nd April, 1945. In the letter, Mary relates local news. Letter was sent via AIRMAIL. Stamp on back of 1. (Gepruft, Stalag XV111A) possibly a forgery created by prisoners to avoid camp censor, Gepruft means checked or passed. "PHYLIS CHAN" wearing her winter Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Uniform and hat". 2. "ALEC CHEW M.B.E. was a Prisoner of War in Ambon, an island off the western tip of Irianjia. He escaped with 7 other prisoners, and tramped across the island away from the camp. With the help of local islanders and Dutch authorities, they used a variety of canoes, prau, and boats to island hop their way to Darwin. Shortly afterwards, Alec returned to the islands hoping to rescue other stranded soldiers. He later joined "Z Force". commandos who remained behind enemy lines to cause disruption to the enemy and gain as much useful information as possible for the allied armies. 3. "GEORGE FONG" joined the RAAF in 1942. He was an Engineering student at Melbourne University and a talented jazz musician. George was mustered as an airman pilot, commissioned in 1943, and sent to Britain. Most of the photos were pasted on something originally so that now most of the writing is unreadable. Two large photos have stamped in red & blue on rear "Gepruft Stalag XVIII A". The card was sent by James Henry Wicks to his sister, unknown. After serving in the 7th Batt, J H Wicks transfered to the 5th Machine Gun Batt AIF in France. He returned home in 1919Greeting card.The outer card is a parchment type paper fawn in colour. The front cover has a yellow ribbon band rectangular in shape glued to the card. A rectangular card is glued over this. The card contains flowers, an image of a church or mosque in a half circle. Above this to the right is wording. During World War II, following the Fall of Singapore in February 1942, the Japanese military detained about 3,000 civilians in Changi Prison, which was built to house only 600 prisoners. The Japanese used the British Army's Selarang Barracks, near the prison, as a prisoner of war camp, holding some 50,000 Allied—predominantly British and Australian—soldiers.[1] Although POWs were rarely, if ever, held in the civilian prison, the name Changi became synonymous in the UK, Australia, and elsewhere with the POW camp. About 850 POWs died during their internment in Changi during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore,[2] a relatively low rate compared to the overall death rate of 27% for POWs in Japanese camps.[3] However, many more prisoners died after being transferred from Changi to various labour camps outside Singapore, including the Burma Railway and the Sandakan airfield.this item is of historical significance because it is supposedly one of the few surving keys to Changi Jail and donated by Mr.Robertson . Letter written from (unknown) POW imprisioned by the Japanese on Morotai Island from 1942 - 1945 to (unknown) friend. Descriptive of life and treatment in POW camp. The island was captured by the Japanese in early 1942. Morotai's southern plain was taken by American forces in September 1944 during the Battle of Morotai, and used as a staging point for the Allied invasion of the Philippines in early 1945, and of Borneo in May and June of that year.
