These photographs were taken by The Advocate in 1991 when the first stage of the Polish Sporting and Recreation Association (PSRA) opened in Carrington Drive, Albion. The centre consisted of a large social club building which will be equipped with gaming machines as soon as they become legalised and a soccer pitch.The Sunshine Polish Club, formally the Polish Community and Sporting Centre in Albion — is one of the most significant post‑war migrant institutions in Melbourne’s west. It was founded and driven almost entirely by the vision and persistence of Mieczysław Żurek, who secured land, funding, and community support to build a major Polish cultural and sporting hub in Albion. Between 1978 and 1980, Żurek negotiated with Sunshine City Council for land to build a Polish stadium and community centre. In 1984, Sunshine City Council Administrator Alexander "Alex" Gillon offered an 8‑hectare lot on Carrington Drive, Albion, owned by Boral Company. The building was erected in c 1913 as a home / surgery for Dr James L Blakie (1868-1937), who originally lived / practised across the road. It was designed by architect Arthur William Plaisted (1890-1965) and is an early example of attic-style Californian bungalow style. Dr Carrington ( 1900-1970) succeeded Dr Blakie and practised at 174 Union Road from 1930-1970. The history of this land dates back many decades, when at first in the late 19th century, the site started as a quarry, and this continued until the late 1960's. During this time large quantities of bluestone was extracted from the site, The site was then purchased by the City of Sunshine which subsequently turned it into a tip. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, this disused quarry then became one of the main waste disposal sites for metropolitan Melbourne. The site now has long and documented history of toxic gas leakage and contaminated soil risks, especially where residential and community buildings were later constructed on or near uncompacted waste. The most authoritative, recent public reporting confirms long‑term methane and other landfill gas concerns, plus legacy contamination risks that were not consistently disclosed to buyers.The City of Brimbank is now responsible for managing the legacy impacts of the closed Sunshine Tip, even though Brimbank did not operate the tip, but as it was operated by the former City of Sunshine, Brimbank inherited the consequences due to the council amalgamations of 1994. This site demonstrates how legacy contamination can create long‑term constraints and risks for later development, long after the original waste‑disposal activities have ended. The Sunshine Energy Park site was quarried for basalt from around 1900, following this the worked-out quarry pits were reclaimed by landfilling from the late-1960s until the late-1980s under licence. Capping works occurred progressively during operation and to a final landform after closure. Additional civil works commenced in 2012 which included the works to import soil to create a water shedding profile and improve drainage. Aftercare of the landfill continues, including environmental monitoring, settlement monitoring and control of residual landfill gas. The Closed Sunshine Landfills are now suitable for recreation and community use after extensive rehabilitation works and aftercare management, which will continue into the future. The park’s name relates to an energy production scheme that operated on the site in the 1990’s which used the landfill gas to generate electricity for export to the State network. This bundel of twenty pages of meteorological observations covers the period between March 1947 and April 1948 but there are some gaps. The bundle includes handwritten records on pre-printed forms from the Commonwealth Government and brief records on plain paper. There are calculations for monthly totals of information such as rainfall, and there are some comparisons between the years. One of the forms has handwriting in three directions, which is quite unusual. Readings were recorded daily for barometer, temperature and wind. Information gathered from Lighthouse Keepers' letters tells of the large amount of time taken for this detailed work and the lack of payment made for such a responsibility. The quite detailed record for May, June and July 1947 were signed by C Carrington, Harbour Master for Warrnambool. Captain Carrington was responsible to the Harborus Board. He was responsibilite for the fortnightly training of the Warrnambool Lifeboat Crew on the practice of lifesaving and using the Rocket Rescue equipment. These Meteorological Observations are an important accurate record of the local weather since the late 1899s. They are part of Flagstaff Hill's Meteorological Observations collection of over seventy record books dating from the late 19th century. The collected information gives a picture of the weather patterns for the months and seasons, which then allows for warnings of events out of the normal or extreme, such as forecasting floods or droughts.Meteorological Observations for Warrnambool March 1947 to May 1948. A bundle of unbound sheets of paper joined at the top left corner with a metal fastener. The pages are ordered from most recent on top to the oldest on bottom. The older records are on pre-printed forms and include many handwritten details. The more recent records are handwritten on plain paper.
