This circular was issued to both Legacy Club of Melbourne and The 'Carry On' Club of Melbourne, and signed by presidents: JHB Armstrong for Legacy and WL Sinclair for Carry On. It was after a series of annual conferences between the two clubs and shows an agreement between the clubs on the spheres of work carried out by each club to prevent duplication of effort. As a general rule, Legacy would concentrate on the care of widows and children of DECEASED servicemen; the 'Carry On' Club would focus on the LIVING ex-servicemen and their dependents. A note was made that the Intermediate Legacy Club was a group formed of sons of deceased soldiers who had progressed through the Junior Legacy Club and now 'interest themselves in the physical well-being of totally and permanently incapacitated ex-servicemen.' When an ex-serviceman dies leaving dependents the case will be transferred from the Carry On Club to Legacy, with the occasional exception. Employment: 'Legacy will pass to 'Carry On' the employment opportunities or vacancies that can be filled by ex-servicemen or their dependents in instances were Legacy is unable to fill such vacancies from it's own register' and vice versa. Welfare: close liaison is important and copies of reports will be transferred when transferring cases. These resolutions and discussions about them are shown in the minutes of the "Combined Meeting of Members of Legacy and 'Carry On' Clubs held at Legacy Club Rooms on 27 May 1937, which is the second document included here. Present for Legacy were Legatees Armstrong, Russell, Birrell, Kemsley, Clements. And present for the 'Carry On' Club were Messrs Hall, Pears, Masterson, Neil and Ramsay. The notation H10 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A record that Legacy was in contact with similar clubs with the intent of sharing the work load and not duplicating effort. The book is about the history of the Carry On Club which was set up in 1932 along similar lines to Legacy. Their main focus is to help with the care for veterans and their dependents. The founder was WL Hawkins (1861-1969), who served in the First AIF in 1915 and saw active service in France. He attained the rank of Lieutenant. With the economic collapse of 1929 he saw a need to help the many unemployed ex-servicemen. He discussed his ideas with Stan Savige of Legacy. These letters and notices from 1935 relate to Legacy establishing a Fund to help with Victorian children that are not eligible for the benefits of the Repatriation Department, the RSS. Children's Scholarship Fund and other established funds. The primary policy of the Trust is to provide 'educational assistance for the children of deceased soldiers by way of tuition fees, trailing expenses, cost of books, equipment and/or contributions towards the maintenance of the beneficiaries during the period of training.' Documents include a memo being sent to all Legatees explaining the fund and asking for ideas on how to raise the money and introductions to possible donors. Also a letter to the minister explaining the scheme. It seems if the death of the father was not ruled as 'due to war causes' the child was not eligible for Repatriation educational benefits. Whereas Legacy does not draw a distinction in relation to the cause or time of death of the father. Legacy had been working with the 'Carry On' Club and spent several hundreds of dollars for these children. The 'Carry On' Club was changing its focus to living war veterans. A memo dated 5th December 1935 says there was a delay in passing the 'Enabling Bill' through Parliament. Further outcome is not known. The notation H13 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Photos of plaques at the base of trees at the Shrine of Remembrance. One is of the Lone Pine planted from by Legacy from the seeds of a cone from Gallipoli and planted by Legatee Stan Savige in 1933 in remembrance of fallen comrades of the 24th Battalion. The plaque is in the form of the red and white diamond badge of the 24th Battalion. This tree had to be removed in 2012 due to its age had led to safety concerns. Also a plaque from the Olive tree of peace planted by Legatee Frank Doolan in 1973 which was the 50th anniversary of Legacy. Other trees were for Netherlands' Service Personnel, and the 18th squadron NEI-RAAF Forces Association, and the fallen comrades of the RAAF Beaufort squadrons. There is also a tree for the 'Carry On' Club of Victoria. These photos were taken at the same time as views of the Legacy Garden and photos of the man and donkey statue at the Shrine of Remembrance. Believed to be late 1980s when the garden was renamed for Legacy, and before 1998 when the statue of the Widow and Children was installed. MEYER COLLECTION - FALLS CREEK PHOTOS In 1947 a determined group of like-minded State Electricity Commission (SEC) staff including Ray Meyer, the chief surveyor of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, had a common interest that revolved around the skiing potential of the snow-covered high plains which included what is now the resort of Falls Creek. The six SEC employees, Toni St Elmo, Ray Meyer, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson (together with their families) banded together to secretly build a 'hut' that was the first ski lodge at Falls Creek. Using a road built in 1930s to gain access to Falls Creek, their hut project was carried out in secret as efforts by other skiers were blocked by H.H.C. Williams – the engineer in charge of the Hydro Scheme. In 1946 Ray Meyer made a trip to the Lands Office in Melbourne. He came away with a 99-year lease on three acres that was ideally suited for a hut designed by Lloyd Dunn. Adrian Ruffenacht (Design Engineer for the KHS) had suggested where the group should build because of easy access to a spring for water. Much of the building material required was scavenged from derelict huts on the high plains. Due to the need for secrecy, the determined group worked on the hut in the evenings and weekends to avoid detection. During the building period the group had met at Echidna Rock (now known as Eagle Rock) where Skippy St Elmo announced, "This is my favourite ‘Skyline’.” And so the first lodge in the area at Falls Creek Ski Resort came into existence. With the development of the International Poma in the 1970s, the Skyline Lodge, which was sited between the ski-lift’s pole one and pole two, was demolished. However, the legacy of Ray Meyer, Toni St Elmo, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson and Skyline lives on in the vibrant atmosphere of Falls Creek Resort. Syd Cadwallader was appointed manager of the company. The gold was smelted and brought to Orbost on horseback. The only protection against thieves was a revolver and riding crop, which the manager always carried. The 'Ace of Clubs' was eventually closed as the company was unable to cope with the rising water problem. Principal Frank Lord gave an ANZAC Day address called "Live Every Day as an Anzac Day". The address started with "Our opportunity is with the children. If we failed i nthe past, lest us begin again now. You are young, and let it be your resolve to live every day as an Anzac Day, and achieve some of the things for which the men of two wars have laid down their lives. Living your days with an air of kindness and decency, you will set an example to the children, and when a country's children are made happier and finer, it will follow that the county will be a happier and finer place." Mt Lord referred to theseven and a half months' occupation of Gallipoli, and the tenacious clinging by Anzac troops to their square mile of territory. Illness, disease and death came to the confined area, but there also came a spirit of self-sacrifice and charity, and a courage whoich scorrned death and won for the Australian troops world renown. Strong men broke under the conditions, but their comrades carried them on, and the prevailing spirit among men was that the had dedicated ther lives to ensuring a decent society at home, free of tyranny. For the achievement of this, they were prepared to die. It became characteristic that when things were at their worst, men were at their best. Discipline did not come from above on Gallipoli, for the men stuck their own standards of discipline, and stuck to them. ... After the 1914-18 war, it was surprising to find head teachers who did not know children of deceased and disabled soldiers in their schools. All teachers should acquaint themselves with this knowledge, and seek assistance from children who are eligible for help from the Repatriation Department. The photograph shows the coach owned by Mr Tom Malinn of Sardine Creek. It is in front of the Orbost Club Hotel in Nicholson Street, Orbost. On lst Juy 1926, Tom Malin took over the horse drawn coach run from Orbost to Delegate. After a few years he obtained an International 2-3 ton truck. On his first trip to Bendoc he did not carry mail, but brought Miss Cunning, the first lady head teacher and collected ballot boxes. On his next trip (March 1930) he made history as the first mailman on this route to deliver mail in a motor vehicle. (info. Bendoc History) Tom and Sophie Malinn farmed at Martin’s Creek. Sophie (nee Jensen) married Tom Malinn in 1926. Sophie’s family had run the historic “Danebo Hotel” at Martin’s Creek for many years, and in 1931, Tom and Sophie began farming at Martin’s Creek, initially cropping maize and beans. The first hotel built in Orbost was the Club in 1885, an old wooden place on the corner built for J. A. Petersen of the Mitchell Hotel Bairnsdale, now known as the Victoria Hotel. Tom Maguire, a step­son of the late Mr. Petersen, carried on the club Hotel Orbost for 5 or 6 years. The Schweizer SGS 2-12 or TG-3A as officially certificated is a glider that was designed in 1941-1942 and produced in United States of America from 1942 for training of military glider pilots. Fred Hoinville imported the Museum’s TG-3A into Australia in August 1950. It is understood that it had been built in 1948 and given construction number G15. On arrival in Australia it was assembled at Bankstown aerodrome and delivered by aero-tow behind a DH Tiger Moth to Camden where Hoinville’s club, the Hinkler Soaring Club, was based. Hoinville’s TG-3A performed well at the Hinkler club in 1950-1951. Several altitude records (including a solo flight to 8000 feet by Grace Roberts – a national women’s record) were set and many soaring flight made over Camden. However, it was badly damaged in a crash landing on 15 April 1951. The glider was repaired after the crash at Camden. It is likely that modifications were made to the cockpit canopy at this time. There were three configuration tried at various times: the original dual cockpit canopy as was standard for TG3As; an unusual dual bubble canopy set up; and a single canopy over the forward seating position (in effect converting the glider to a single seater). When the glider was flown by Hoinville at the 1958 Australian Gliding Championships at Benalla, Victoria in January 1959 (refer The Age Newspaper, January 10, 1959 p.21) it had a single canopy. Records show that the glider was entered on the Australian register as VH-GDI on 6 May 1957. And the Logbook commencing in 1959 shows that ownership passed to the Port Augusta Gliding Club in South Australia on 16 August 1959. Inspections were carried out at that club and airworthiness certificates renewed in 1965. The logbook record indicates that VH-GDI had 1191 flights with an aggregate time in the air of 197 hours at the Wilmington Road Airstrip used by the Port Augusta Club. The glider was transferred to the Cooma Gliding Club, New South Wales. Flying at Cooma began in November 1966 and continued until August 1969: the glider was in the air a further 108 hours from 1067 flights. The last recorded technical inspection of the glider was conducted on 28 September 1968. The glider then passed on to Bill Riley on 20 March 1980 who stored the glider until March 2004 when it was collected by the Australian Gliding Museum. It is not clear whether the current poor state of the airframe is due to accident damage or the conditions under which it has been stored over many years or a combination of factors. Although in poor condition, this exhibit is the sole example of a TG3A ex-US military aircraft in Australia. Further the connection with the story of well-known power and glider pilot Fred Hoinville adds to its historical significance. This walking stick, which is also a horse measurer, belonged to Atwell George Bendall, the well-known racing man, judge and handicapper in the Western District early in the 20th century. Born in the Caramut district, he was the manager of the ‘Green Hills’ estate at Winslow, a property owned by his father who also operated a livery and coach service at Caramut. When his father died Bendall carried on the family business until the end of the 19th century when he went to live in Warrnambool. A lover of horses, Bendall was an amateur rider of note and an owner of several racehorses. He also took a keen interest in coursing and owned and bred many successful dogs. In Warrnambool he took an interest in trotting and owned several trotters. For the last sixteen years of his life Atwell Bendall was a handicapper for most of the Western District race clubs and his keen judgment and knowledge of horses were greatly admired and appreciated. He was also a judge at agricultural shows and other horse events and this is probably where he was made use of this horse-measuring walking stick. He died in 1922. This is a most significant item as it belonged to the prominent early 20th century horse racing identity in the Western District – Atwell Bendall. It is also of general historical interest as an ingenious object – a walking stick doubling as a horse measurer. This is a mottled brown-coloured wooden walking stick, slightly tapered and with seven segments. It has a wooden knob at the top curved and indented in an acorn shape. The knob has silver coloured nails or tacks driven into the raised sections. The knob lifts out and is actually a wooden ruler with silver casing at the top of the ruler. Also at the top of the ruler, at a right angle to the ruler, is a lift-out metal piece which has a spirit level at the top end and this metal piece is used to rest on the horse to estimate its measurement in hands. There is a leather strap near the top of the walking stick for attachment to the wrist and a gold metal cap at the bottom of the stick. This exercise book contains details on the work carried out by A.Greed, a tradesman undertaking small carpentry and repair jobs in the Warrnambool region. The works completed date from 17 April 1945 to 11 October 1949. Mr Greed apparently worked mostly for the Public Works Department and had contracts for schools including Ecklin South, Panmure, Cudgee, Dennington, Mailors Flat, Grasmere, and Warrnambool Technical School and for other public buildings including the Warrnambool Court House, the Police Station and Housing Commission buildings. Other contracts included ones for the Framlingham Aboriginal Reserve, Callaghan’s Garage, the Caledonian Hotel, the Methodist Croquet Club and many private home owners. Details on the identity of ‘A. Greed’ are not known as there are several possibilities for the 1940s era. One clue is that an ‘E. Greed’ was also an employee.This exercise book is of some interest as an example of a tradesman’s handwritten details of his work as a carpenter and repair man in the 1940s in the Warrnambool area. There are many local names and businesses of interest mentioned in the exercise book. This is an exercise book with a grey cover with red binding. The dark blue printing on the front cover is enclosed in scroll patterns and the back cover has dark blue printing The cover is creased and has some ink splotches. The front cover has been stamped but the printing is now mostly illegible. The pages contain handwritten work and accounting information in black and blue ink. The owner of this card case was Dr Horace Holmes who was a doctor in Warrnambool for over 40 years. Dr Holmes (1877-1959) was born in Tasmania and completed a medical course at Melbourne University. He came to Warrnambool in 1905, taking over the practice of Dr Fleetwood at ‘Ierne’, at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. In 1906 he built a new home at the corner of Liebig Street and Raglan Parade and moved his practice there in 1912 (today this building is the Warrnambool Medical Clinic). Dr Holmes was an honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital. He retired in 1939 selling his practice to Dr Berryman but came out of retirement and practised as a locum until 1944. His interests included rowing golf, bowls and fishing. In the 1950s he lived at ‘Leprena’ in Canterbury Road. He was a foundation member of the Warrnambool Rotary Club. This is a most significant item as it belonged to a prominent local doctor, Dr Horace Holmes. It also has considerable social significance as it is an example of the practice of past times of carrying calling cards and the silver case is a sign of the affluence of the owner. This is a silver card case, heavily embossed, with a slightly curved shape and a hinged lid. It has the initials ‘HIH’ engraved in a shield on the front of the case. It contains nine calling cards (Dr Horace Holmes, Warrnambool). These are made of light card with printing in black on a white background. The cards are somewhat marked and discoloured. This gold locket was presented to Thomas Edward Bostock on his retirement as Secretary of the Warrnambool Cricket Club on 1st August 1884. Thomas Bostock was a member of the Bostock family who had come from Tasmania to the Warrnambool district in the late 1840s. The Bostock brothers were prominent in the history of the area as pastoralists, shopkeepers, flour millers and Bond Store operators. They were all enthusiastic local cricketers. Thomas worked for the Bank of Australasia in the 1880s and was a keen footballer and cricketer. He moved to Geelong where he made his mark as a Councillor, Mayor and businessman, with several buildings and a street named after him. This item is of very high significance because:- 1. It is an attractive and valuable gold locket from Victorian times 2. It has strong local significance as it was presented in 1884 to a prominent Warrnambool man, Thomas Edward Bostock 3. It has considerable social significance, demonstrating the customs of the time of a man carrying a locket containing miniatures of personal interest to the bearer and of the presentation of such an object by a sporting club. This is a gold locket with a monogram of T.E. Bostock on the front and an inscription on the back. The locket has a small ring at the top so that it could be attached to a watch chain.
