This font is a piece of church furniture used in a baptism or christening service. It was originally installed in the St Nicholas Seamen's Church at 139 Nelson Place, Williamstown, Victoria. The church was a branch of the Victoria Missions to Seamen. THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN (Brief History): - The Missions to Seamen was an Anglican charity that has served seafarers of the world since 1856 in Great Britain. Its symbol is a Flying Angel, inspired by a Bible verse. Today, there are centres in over 200 ports worldwide where seamen of all backgrounds are offered a warm welcome and provided with a wide range of facilities. In Victoria, the organisation began in Williamstown in 1857 as a Sailors’ Church, also known as ‘Bethel’ or the ‘Floating Church’ in an old hulk floating in Hobson’s Bay, Port of Melbourne. It soon became part of the Missions to Seamen, Victoria. In the year 2000, the organisation, now named Mission to Seafarers, still operated locally in Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings. The Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild was formed in 1906 to support the Missions to Seamen in Melbourne and other centres, such as Williamstown. Two of the most significant ladies of the Guild were founder Ethel Augusta Godfrey and foundation member Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (who established a branch of the Guild in Warrnambool in 1920). The Guild continued its work until the 1960s. In 1943, a former Williamstown bank was purchased for the Missions to Seaman Club. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village, so the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981, and closely resembles the Williamstown chapel. This font is significant through its association with the St Nicholas' Mission to Seamen Church in Williamstown, Melbourne, established in 1857. The collection of items from the Missions to Seamen in Williamstown, Victoria, has historical and social significance. They show that people of the 1800s and 1900s cared about the seafarers’ religious, moral, and social welfare, no matter what their religion, social status or nationality. It had its origins in Bristol, England, when a Seamen's Mission was formed in 1837. The first Australian branch was started in 1856 by the Rev. Kerr Johnston, a Church of England clergyman, and operated from a hulk moored in Hobson’s Bay; later, the Mission occupied buildings in Williamstown and Port Melbourne. Victorian Heritage Database: St Paul's Cathedral, Bendigo was built in stages. The nave was built in 1868, the tower in 1872-73 and the transepts and sanctuary in 1926-27. Robert Love was the architect, although the final stage was supervised by architects Gawler and Drummond. Cathedral status was transferred from the original cathedral All Saints to St Paul's in 1981. The Gothic style cathedral is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. It has a simple cruciform plan comprising a six bay nave, transepts and sanctuary. A tall tower centrally located at the west end dominates the exterior. The peal of eight bells was cast by Meares and Co of London and installed in 1873. The interior features elaborately cusped roof principals; an organ by Alfred Fuller built in 1883 with a console and pipes added later from St Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney; and notable stained glass by Ferguson, Urie and Lyon. St Paul's Rectory was built in 1885 to a design by the architect WC Vahland. The Parish Office and Hall was built as a Sunday School in 1898 to a design by FW Lehmann. St Paul's Cathedral is of architectural, aesthetic and historical significance to the state of Victoria. The cathedral is a significant example of the Early English Gothic style. The tower, with its distinctively detailed pinnacles, its spiral staircase and carillon of eight bells, is a notable feature and a town landmark. The interior is aesthetically important for its decorative detail. The roof structure, rising some 18.3 metres from the 11 metre walls in suspended semi-circles from the pillarless nave, is highly significant for both its considerable technical achievement and its aesthetic appeal. The interior features fine examples of carved timber fixtures and fittings. The interior is also noteworthy for the high quality of its stained glass, especially the twelve apostle windows by Ferguson, Urie and Lyon. The cathedral also features a number of important movable objects such as the finely carved eagle lectern in oak, the ornately carved timber chair in the sanctuary, the two baptismal fonts, the ornately carved canons' stalls with eagle motifs in the sanctuary and the two large candle holders. Important works of art include the opus sectile reredos in mosaic; the sculpture of Madonna and Child in Queensland birch by sculptress Leopoldine Mimovich; and the carved figures of St Peter and St Paul at the high altar by the sculptress Ola Cohn. St Paul's Cathedral complex has historical associations with the Anglican church in Bendigo, particularly the rivalry between St Paul's and the original cathedral, All Saints, and the long and controversial debate about 'High Church versus Low Church'. It has associations with individuals important to the history of the Anglican church in Bendigo including John Christian MacCullagh, the first Dean of Bendigo, after whom the MacCullagh Chapel was named, and Canon David Anthony, a former rector of the church. https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/3695National Trust Collection: St Paul's Church of England, Bendigo Church constructed of red brick with contrasting brick features. The maniple is a liturgical vestment used primarily within the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church, and occasionally by Lutheran and Anglican clergy. It is an embroidered band of silk or like fabric that hangs from the left forearm, worn over the alb. It is used only during Mass, and it is always of the same liturgical colour as other Mass vestments. The original purpose of the maniple is unclear, but it probably originated as a cloth that the priest could use to wipe his hands and face. The maniple corresponds to the epimanikia, cuffs worn on both wrists in the Eastern Orthodox, Eastern Lutheran and Eastern Catholic Churches. Assisi embroidery originated in Assisi, Umbria region in Italy, during the Renaissance. The techniques involved in Assisi embroiderywere practiced for many centuries; however, the modern form of Assisi embroidery as it is recognized today took its shape and form in Assisi in the 18th century. Early examples of Assisi embroidery often feature religious themes, pointing to its ecclesiastical beginnings. Convent nuns stitched church altar cloths, chasubles, vestments, and other religious items and materials with Assisi embroidery motifs. St. Clare of Assisi, an Italian nun who started the order of St. Clare, later became the patron saint of embroiderers. She was known for stitching altar cloths for churches in Assisi. Assisi embroidery went through several evolutionary stages, reflected in its changing motifs. In the 13th and 14th centuries, motifs included stylized birds and animals, scrollwork, and geometric designs. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Assisi work reflected Biblical and Renaissance-inspired motifs, with demons, angels, and mythological creatures.Assisi work - natural evenweave linen with double running in black round the design then filled in with blue cross stitch, leaving the design 'voided'.embroidery, assisi, 1940-60, italy, sachet, lions

Blue and white pattern bands with woven figures resembling historical Perugia towels (tovaglie perugine) or similar patterned weaves from the 16th to 17th centuries. Perugia towels were a highly specialized textile tradition from Umbria, Italy that flourished during the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The aesthetic impact was so massive that Renaissance masters like Leonardo da Vinci painted Perugia tablecloths into their works - for example "The Last Supper". Symbolism and motifs characterised medieval and Renaissance bestiary - the Griffin was the mythological symbol of Perugia. Majolica fuseruola beads (or spindle-whorl bead) originate from Deruta, Italy, mainly date from the late 19 th to mid 20 th century. The Latin phrase SEMPER IDEM translates to 'Always the same' or 'Ever constant, unchanging'. Giuditta Brozzetti Museum Atelier Housed inside the deconsecrated Church of Saint Francis of the Women (built in 1212) in Perugia. Founded in 1921 by Giuditta Brozzetti to revive Umbrian hand-weaving, the workshop is now run by her great-granddaughter, master artisan Marta Cucchia (representing four consecutive generations of women weavers). Uses functional, antique 18th-century wooden pedal looms and 19th-century Jacquard looms (including 1836 Vincenzi-patented models). 23.10.2026 Thank you for contacting us and giving us the opportunity to see such a beautiful piece! In the early 20th century, there was a major revival movement for Umbrian textile art. This bag was likely created by one of the many workshops that emerged during that period. Unfortunately, as we are the last remaining atelier still in operation—and many of the others closed a very long time ago—we have no way of verifying exactly which workshop produced it. Based on certain details, it might have come from the Ceccucci workshop, though we cannot state this with certainty. The design appears to depict the Griffin—the symbol of our city. Since the Griffin was rarely portrayed from a frontal perspective during the Middle Ages, I would attribute this piece to the 20th-century revival; it seems to be an Art Nouveau interpretation of a Gothic motif. The simple, tone-on-tone weave pattern found above and below the decorated section is known as "Occhietto" ("little eye") and is characteristic of the Perugian tradition. The entire item appears to be made of 100% cotton. The Brozzetti Team Perugia Indigo and cream cotton bag, woven with Griffin motifs, from Perugia, Italy.
