The City of Greater Bendigo Council was constituted on 7 April 1994 as part of a statewide program of local government reform enacted between 1993 and 1995. The reform process reduced the number of councils from 210 to 78. The City of Greater Bendigo has been appointed as the successor in law for the City of Bendigo, the Rural City of Marong, the Borough of Eaglehawk and the Shires of Huntly and Strathfieldsaye and has assumed any rights, assets and liabilities of these abolished councils. The Memorial Walls & Walkway came about as part of the Re Developement of the Forecourt of the Soldiers Memorial Institute (Bendigo Military Museum) and completed in 2008.There was a Wall on the north and south side of the building. Discussions re some sort of Memorial(s) had gone on for several years with a number of plans and ideas being put forward. A final Sub Committee was appointed in April 2010 of 4 people being Richards, Ball, Poustie and Harding. The first meeting was on May 20th with one apology and Ball chairing and over 3 hours a final plan was put together from all the previous plans and ideas. On the 21st measurements and photos were taken to draw up the final recommendations to Committee BDRSL. The recommendations in brief were: Five central plaques on the north wall with Unit/Association/Conflict/Service based plaques placed equally out on each side of the five central. On both the north & south walls at one end would be the lettering in large brass “Lest We Forget”. Application for a plaque would be via a form, all plaques the same size and no individual names on. The folder holds the minutes of the meeting and plans that would go to BDRSL for approval. A briefer version that would go to the Members of BDRSL for final approval. Two more copies used on the day. The application form. One page with initial plaque costs. Three pages with 6 photos per page showing the time line re placement of the plaques. Brief time line. April 2010. Final Sub Committee formed. May 20/21st. First meeting of the Sub Committee. May 24th.Plans approved by Committee BDRSL June 21st. Plans approved by Members of BDSL. June 23rd. Over 3 days the 5 main plaques and 5 Association plaques are placed. April 2011. Over 2 days the Lettering “Lest We Forget” is placed. 11.11.2011. The walls are dedicated. 2013 - 2025. Seven more plaques placed with last being so far on 27.3.2025. The Walls remained equal each side of the Main 5 central until the Redevelopment of the Soldiers Memorial Institute and Museum in 2016 - 18 with the RH end plaque being removed for steps to be placed. Edith Lunn (nee Bishop) was born in Bendigo in July, 1907, and has lived all her life in the city and its immediate environs. Edith long interest and involvement in the community was recognised in 2002 when she was awarded the Order of Australia medal for her services to, and interest in, Bendigo's history. This book records some of her recollections of Bendigo in its earlier days. Bendigo (/ˈbɛndɪɡoʊ/ BEN-dig-oh), formerly known as Sandhurst, is an Australian city in north-central Victoria. The city is located in the Bendigo Valley near the geographical centre of the state and approximately 150 kilometres (93 mi) north-west of Melbourne, the state capital. Bendigo is administered by the City of Greater Bendigo. The council area encompasses roughly 3,000 square kilometres. The city is surrounded by smaller towns such as Castlemaine, Heathcote, Kyneton, Maryborough, Elmore, Rochester, Goornong and Axedale. The traditional owners of the area are the Dja Dja Wurrung (Djaara) people. The discovery of gold on Bendigo Creek in 1851 transformed the area from a sheep station into one of colonial Australia's largest boomtowns. News of the finds intensified the Victorian gold rush, bringing an influx of migrants from around the world, particularly Europe and China. Bendigo became eastern Australia's largest 19th-century gold-mining economy, and the wealth generated during this period is reflected today in the city's Victorian architectural heritage. From 1853 until 1891, Bendigo was officially named Sandhurst. Bendigo's boom period lasted until the early 20th century and after a temporary decline in population and employment, renewed growth occurred from the 1930s as the city consolidated as a manufacturing and regional service centre. When the SMI was opened in Nov 1921 the Bendigo RSL Sub - Branch had occupancy from that day on. The Building became a Museum opened to the public in 1998 by the RSL. The origins of this project goes back to 20.10.2011 with a letter to the City of Greater Bendigo of the possibility of an upgrade to the SMI from the Bendigo District RSL Sub - Branch Inc. Some renovations separate had already taken place and some structural work. After initial talks and planning a final sub - committee of 3 persons from the RSL was elected to work with the Council along with other bodies who would be involved. Plans eventuated by 2015 and were put to the RSL for approval. From there the fund raising began from the State/Federal Govt's, RSL, the Public and Council itself. This was achieved and finally in Sept 2016 the SMI/Museum was packed up completely and the Renovations began in 2017. The Bendigo Gas Works are one of around three remaining intact 19th century gas works in the world, and the only one in Australia. It is on the Victorian Heritage Register and regarded by Institution of Engineers Australia as an internationally significant example of an entire provincial gasworks The Bendigo Gasworks operated from 1860 until 1973 when natural gas was introduced and remain as they were at the time of closure; a treasure of industrial heritage frozen in time. It is an internationally significant example of an entire provincial gasworks. It has the only horizontal gas-producing retorts in Australia. Coal Gas was manufactured here from 1860 and operated continuously until the introduction of natural gas in 1973. The works were operated by the Bendigo Gas Company until purchased by the Gas and Fuel Corporation in 1958 at which time they were supplying 3,500 consumers. During the Second World War the works were expanded by the Ministry of Munitions to serve the Bendigo Ordinance Factory. The original works were constructed during 1859-1860 under the direction of engineer Alexander Kennedy Smith (1824 - 1881) and developed in a period of growth by W. A. Simco, General Manager 1922-1939. Sandhurst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival. The aim of The Bendigo Easter Festival is to increase awareness of, and attendance at the Bendigo Easter Festival amongst regional, intrastate, and interstate audiences by 2006. Bendigo Easter Festival - Australia's oldest festival ... .... .. Gold, gold, gold. The year of 1871 was a great year for Bendigo. Parks were laid out, trees lined the streets. Although acknowledged as starting in 1869 the Easter Festival was considered an annual event by 1871. Under brilliant illumination the whole of the Camp Reserve (now Rosalind Park) was filled with a bewildering variety of groups, exhibits and individuals all eager to be involved in such a worthwhile cause. There were sports meetings, theatricals, bazaars and instrumental items as well as dancing and carnival rides. On Easter Monday, as it is today, there was a grand procession that included a variety of bands. 1871 also marked the first year that the Chinese joined in the festivities. Originally the Chinese participated in the procession by dressing in richly embroidered costumes, and carrying colourful banners in all shapes and sizes, which were specially made for them in China. In 1889, the Chinese were given their traditional place in the Parade, the end. They created a wonderful spectacle with their colourful costumes, banners and flags, and in 1892, Loong, the dragon appeared. The Bendigo Easter Festival had been fortunate in that it bad such a lively Chinese community in its midst. At the time of course, Bendigo was known as Sandhurst, and it was not until twenty years after the first Easter Festival that the town was known as Bendigo. These days with sponsorship from the Sandburst Trustees, the Festival is known as the Sandhurst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival. 132 years later, the Sandburst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival has had many changes. But loyal followers have never been disappointed. This year people saw the traditions upheld with family entertainments and not Loong, but Sun Loong, meaning new dragon, a 100m long Imperial Dragon who was created to take the place of the aging Loong. The Villa Fortuna Action Group, led by president Merle Hall, has received positive feedback from many council election candidates regarding the future of Fortuna Villa. The group reached out to prospective councillors, sharing their proposal and inviting responses, which were thoughtful and enthusiastic. The group is committed to keeping Fortuna Villa under public ownership for the benefit of the Bendigo community. They propose that the City of Greater Bendigo acquire the property, following Commonwealth Government guidelines for priority sale at concessional rates. Alexandra Fountain is regarded as one of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia's most prominent landmarks and monuments. The fountain is located in Bendigo's "Charing Cross", the intersection of View Street and Pall Mall. Haring Cross effectively stands at the centre of the city and is one of Bendigo's busiest and most prominent intersections. The fountain stands opposite to the main entrance of Rosalind Park. Alexandra Fountain was funded from the proceeds of the Bendigo Juvenile Industrial Exhibition (1879), a £500 gift from George Lansell and a further £700 from the Sandhurst City Council (now the City of Greater Bendigo). The fountain was designed by W. C. Vahland,] a local architect responsible for some of the cities most prominent buildings.
