The Bendigo School of Mines was opened in 1873 following the first report of the Technological Commission in 1869 which recommended the establishment of schools of design and science to meet the scientific and technical needs of the mining industry on the local gold fields. Initially mining, chemistry, geology, metallurgy and art were taught while a separate school of design was established in c. 1870 but incorporated into the School of Mines around 1883 when it was renamed as the School of Mines and Industry. In 1904 The Mechanics Institute was liquidated and its assets and buildings acquired by the School of Mines. Around 1907 a Junior Technical School commenced to operate at the School of Mines and Industry but ceased operating in 1961 with that function being transferred to the White Hills and Kangaroo Flat Technical Schools. The Bendigo School of Mines and Industry became known as the Bendigo Technical College from the 1st July 1959. It operated under that name until February 1967 when it became the Bendigo Institute of Technology (B.I.T.). Construction work commenced in c.1965 which saw the Institute progressively re-locate to new buildings at Flora Hill. He was elected a representative in the Mandurang riding in the Shire of Strathfieldsaye in 1887, served as Mayor of the City of Bendigo from 1917 - 1918 and was Secretary of the Bendigo Art Gallery for over 20 years. His father Joseph Abbot had been a member of the School of Mines Administrative Council and RH Abbott served as President of the School of Mines for two years and was a highly regarded business man within the local community. Assay is a process of metallurgy and chemical analysis used to determine proportions of precious metals in ores and other metallurgy substances such as silver or gold. The process helps identify pollutants present within a sample and can indicate a high level of pollution in a mining site. Stoneware crucibles are used in the fire assay process due to their ability to withstand high temperatures. Fire assay is a three step process where by samples from the mine are ground in a find powder and then mixed with dry powder chemicals. This mixture is heated in a crucible to extreme temperatures (crucible fusion) until all of the powers fuse into a glass like slag. Once this reaction is complete, the contents are poured into a mold and cooled. In step three (known as cupellation) the mixture is separated in a fire assay cupel and once this is complete the cupel with reveal a small bead of precious metals. Established by George Guthrie in 1857 (about 5km north of its current site) and then again seven years later in 1864 after it initially closed, Bendigo Pottery remains one of the most influential and longest running potteries in Australia. Over the years the Pottery has contributed to the growth and development of the district through both its products including building products, table ware and decorative and commemorative war as well as artistically, being responsible for training and supporting many potters locally. It has partnered with the City on various tourism promotions and the Civic Collection holds a number of important items within its collection.Two stoneware vessels of differing dimensions (0287.1 & .2). This type of balance scales allows precise measurements to be achieved by ensuring that the balance's fulcrum is essentially friction-free by attaching a pointer to the beam which amplifies any deviation from a balance position; and finally by using the lever principle, which allows fractional masses to be applied by movement of a small mass along the measuring arm of the beam. The standardization of the weights used – and ensuring traders used the correct weights – was a considerable preoccupation of governments throughout this time and inspections were held regularly. When the Weights and Measures Act was passed in Victoria in 1862 local inspectors were established throughout the colony to ensure accuracy particularly in the weighing of gold. By the 1870's each local council had a set of standards that were used to test the scales, weights and measures of local merchants and businesses.Set of small scales possibly from a travelling boxed set due to their small size, similar to those used in an apothecary and weighing gold. A pennyweight was a unit of mass that was equal in weight to 20 grains, one twentieth of an ounce and one 240th of a Troy pound. The abbreviation for a pennyweight is ‘dwt’ (denarius weight). These measures and weights were typically used for weighing gold and other precious metals. Two reasons for placement of Plaques in The New Chum Park. One is to acknowledge the contribution that both the Cornish and German people who lived and worked in Long Gully made to the establishment of City of Greater Bendigo. The second, Famous Journalist Anthony Trollop visited Bendigo just as Underground Mining was starting to blossom. His remarks of Bendigo were uncomplimentary as that of Ballarat, which he complimented as a beautiful city. Twenty years later thanks to U/ground mining Bendigo rivalled Ballarat as a beautiful city to which the residents of Long Gully played a major role. SOUTH FREDERICK THE GREAT MINE Location Unreserved Crown Land along the southern boundary of Sebastian School, east of Three Chain Road, Frederick the Great/Carshalton Reef, Sebastian Map Reference Raywood 1:25000 - BV488.447 Mine site: Capped shaft still surrounded by its mullock paddock. At the base of the paddock on the northern side is a concrete winding engine foundation measuring 8 by 4 feet, and standing 2 feet high. The foundation has ¾-inch mounting bolts. Battery site 70 metres to the west of the mine site are the concrete foundations of a 10head battery. The foundations measure 16 by 11 feet, and stand 4 feet high. Part of the battery's loading ramp still survives, and on the eastern side of the battery foundations is a large concrete engine foundation. Near this engine foundation is a 3 foot square concrete pad, which still retains a circular impression. Presumably this was a stand for a gas producer cylinder. Located between the battery and the mine site is a rubbish dump which contains sections of an iron stack, and perhaps the remains of the gas producer cylinder. Five Truscott brothers came to Bendigo from Cornwall and after seven years mining Anthony Truscott opened a grocery store in 30 Havilah Street, Long Gully. Anthony Truscott (Bap 24/2/1856, Cornwall - 21/9/1913). At the age of 18 Anthony went to America but soon returned to England. At about the age of 24 he came to Victoria c. 1880.. He worked in several mines for the next 7 years before opening his grocery shop. In 1907 he was the president of the Bendigo ANA. In 1915 he was the secretary of the Long Gully fire brigade. He died of dropsy and Brights disease. Edward Truscott ( 2/6/1844 - 9/10/1916) Edward and his wife Ellen lived in Smalley Street, California Gully and at 30 Dowding Street, Eaglehawk. He is buried at Eaglehawk. William Truscott (c. 1853 - 14/10/1911) William was a JP. He was also the first President of the California Gully Progress Association in 1910 John Truscott (1/2/1837 - 6/8/1919) John went to America as a young man where he married Christina Grigg and had several children. He arrived in Australia in 1862 with his family. His wife died shortly after the birth of her baby, and John quickly remarried to Catherine Alice Willis and had more children. He was the mining manager at the Hercules and Energetic Mine at Long Gully from 1877. he still held this position in 1882.Newspaper cutting titled Prominent family to reunite written by Susan Turpie. Kralcopic Pty Ltd, was a subsidiary of Bendigo-based company GBM Gold and had previously held mining licences around Bendigo, which incorporated sites including Kangaroo Flat, New Moon, Eaglehawk and the associated Woodvale Evaporation Ponds Complex. In August 2019, the Earth Resources Regulator decided not to renew Kralcopic’s three mining licences, due to the company’s inability to provide surety that it could finance its mining activities and site rehabilitation obligations. In October 2020, the company filed legal proceedings in the Supreme Court challenging the decision not to renew these licences. The Supreme Court later upheld the regulator’s decision not to renew the licences. On 23 April 2021, the Federal Court of Australia appointed KPMG as Kralcopic’s liquidators. On 14 May 2021, the liquidator lodged papers with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) to disclaim Kralcopic’s freehold land at Woodvale and parcels of land around the company’s former Bendigo sites, with the land to subsequently become Crown land. The Earth Resources Regulator has put a statutory exemption in place to preclude new mining licence applications on the sites while we undertake rehabilitation. The exemption also provides an opportunity for government to consider future uses of the sites in consultation with the City of Greater Bendigo and the local community. The Earth Resources Regulator holds rehabilitation bonds totalling $5.9 million, which it will use to rehabilitate the former sites.Colour photocopy of original photo. The Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition, held at Bendigo from 13 November 1901 to 14 May 1902. The courts were numbered from one, or had titles like “Machinery”, “Agricultural”, “Naval & Military Court” and “Art”. The female visitors to the Exhibition were able to view exhibits deemed suitable for the fairer sex and located within their own “Women’s Court”. There were exhibits such as “Parasols & Umbrellas”, cotton and haberdashery from Manchester and Staffordshire, “Corsets & Embroideries” from Paris. The most valuable exhibits were mining machinery such as Taylor Horsfield’s £850 “Air Compressor & Rock Borer”. “Bohemian Glassware” brought down from Sydney was valued at £600. The profits from this Exhibition were used to fund the sculpture known as the Gold Monument, which still gazes along Pall Mall (from the McCrae Street end). The Exhibition’s Cash Book shows payments, which totalled £1160, were made to then up and coming sculptor C.D.Richardson. The Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition, held at Bendigo from 13 November 1901 to 14 May 1902. The courts were numbered from one, or had titles like “Machinery”, “Agricultural”, “Naval & Military Court” and “Art”. The female visitors to the Exhibition were able to view exhibits deemed suitable for the fairer sex and located within their own “Women’s Court”. There were exhibits such as “Parasols & Umbrellas”, cotton and haberdashery from Manchester and Staffordshire, “Corsets & Embroideries” from Paris. The most valuable exhibits were mining machinery such as Taylor Horsfield’s £850 “Air Compressor & Rock Borer”. “Bohemian Glassware” brought down from Sydney was valued at £600. The profits from this Exhibition were used to fund the sculpture known as the Gold Monument, which still gazes along Pall Mall (from the McCrae Street end). The Exhibition’s Cash Book shows payments, which totalled £1160, were made to then up and coming sculptor C.D.Richardson. Nicholas John Bolle was born in Dorstadt, Germany in 1836 to parents Heinrich (Johannes Heinrich Wilhelm) and Friederike Hartmann (Anne Marie Friedericke). Around the age of 20 he immigrated to Australia and made his way, most likely on foot, 150km in a northerly direction to the Bendigo goldfields. In March 1863 Nicholas registered his first mining claim, naming it Bolle’s Reef. Having worked this reef until it no longer paid, he went on a prospecting tour of the area and found another gold reef towards Elysian Flat, staked a claim and registered it under the name of his beloved wife ‘Rosanna’. Sadly, as was often the case, the cost of hiring men to get the gold out of the ground, and removing it from the clay and quartz, outweighed the amount of profit he was making from his discoveries. In November 1863 while living and working at Old Tom Gully, Nicholas appeared in the Government Gazette as insolvent. Nicholas continued to struggle on, scoping out the surrounding area in the Whipstick Forest, and having some little success and by 1869 he was given a government reward of 25 pounds for discovering a new area of gold in the Whipstick. The Government Gazette records this reward – 'for the discovery of the Whipstick, 25 pounds' (Government Gazette 1869) By 1872 Nicholas had established a quartz crushing plant at his mine in Old Tom Gully, (the Old Tom mine) a remote place in the middle of the Whipstick. Mining was a dangerous business, and in 1875 Nicholas was called as a witness in a coroner’s inquest into the death of a John Bashton who was accidentally killed in a mining accident at nearby Easter Claim in December. In 1881, he was again called to give evidence when one of his employees Mr Thomas Garrett was killed while working at his claim at Old Tom Reef. So we are fortunate to have Nicholas describing his day’s work in his own words. The Marong Heritage Study, Mining Sites ( City of Greater Bendigo) describes the former mine site as follows: '40 metre-long mullock heap with one dumping line running north from a filled shaft. The heap has been partially quarried. 20 metres south is a scatter of red hand-made bricks and rough concrete rubble. Further south there are smaller mullock dumps and a line of shallow reef workings Surface workings 30 metres west of the mullock dump, running north, is a line of small mullock paddocks, terminating in a shallow open cut. On the same line to the south, in an area north and west of the most southerly section of reef workings there is an area of hydraulic sluicing. West of the cyanide works and along Scotchman Gully there are patches of shallow alluvial workings. Battery site On the eastern side of the open-cut is a small mullock paddock, below which is a spread of hand-made red bricks and fire bricks. Near this rubble is a dry dam, with traces of battery sand nearby. Puddling machine site 10 metres north of the water race is the outline of a 20 foot diameter puddling machine. The central mound retains its wooden post and fragments of timber side-boarding are still present in the puddling trench. Water was fed to the puddling machine from the race by a pipe, now largely buried. The dumps are weathered and partially quarried, but the puddling machine is in good con 40 metre-long mullock heap with one dumping line running north from a filled shaft. The heap has been partially quarried. 20 metres south is a scatter of red hand-made bricks and rough concrete rubble. Diamond Hill was a gold mining village 5 km south of Bendigo and about 1 km west of the Spring Gully Reservoir. Its location is now inaccessible and within the water catchment area. Diamond Hill was reputedly named after a diamond shaped rock on the hill. With the development of mining companies which employed workers with families, a school was needed by 1873 and one was opened at the beginning of the next year. The mining companies included Great Comet Quartz Mining, Golden Fleece Quartz Mining, Albert Tribute, Glasgow Golconda, and Albert Gold Mining and Crushing. Mining continued beyond 1900, as recorded in the Australian handbook, 1903. The Bendigo Mining N.L. company was located nearby, adjoining Ham Street.
