On 1 October 1915, the Borough of Raywood, which was gazetted on 17 January 1865 on 23.31 square kilometres of land 28 kilometres north of Bendigo was united with Marong. On 1 October 1990, the Shire of Marong became a rural city, under the Local Government Act 1989. In a report on 17 February 1994, the Local Government Board recommended that the five councils in the Bendigo region merge to form a "super city", with a population of about 81,000. Marong, Eaglehawk and Huntly had earlier objected to the proposal, and the Board noted a weak no vote against the merger proposal in a referendum in the region; about 70% had voted against, but with a turnout of between 30% and 40% of eligible voters. The three councils filed a writ in the Supreme Court, alleging failure to follow process by the Minister for Local Government, Roger Hallam, but by the time the new "super city" was announced, the writ had not yet been heard, and on 24 March 1994, the Rural City of Marong successfully applied for an injunction blocking the publication of the gazette the following day abolishing the five councils and appointing three commissioners. The government responded by introducing legislation, the City of Greater Bendigo Bill 1994, to Parliament, to effectively override the Supreme Court action, with Hallam saying "the bill would make clear that the Government is determined to achieve its objective for a more efficient municipal structure for the Bendigo region." Marong mayor Robert Hynes described the action as "terribly disappointing", adding, "One way or another, I believe it does mean an end to our fight... it seems the Government are above the law to me." On 6 April 1994, Marong voted to drop the Supreme Court action, effectively in doing so voting itself out of existence, and on 7 April 1994, the Rural City of Marong was abolished, and along with the City of Bendigo, the Borough of Eaglehawk and the Shires of Huntly and Strathfieldsaye, was merged into the newly created City of Greater Bendigo. The reasons for living in Marong are described as deeply personal and sometimes hard to define, often tied to a sense of belonging and community.Tess Rule, a long-time resident, expresses genuine affection for Marong and its people, emphasizing the friendliness and strong social ties within the town. The document features a vivid description of Marong's picturesque landscape, including sunsets, Bullock Creek, gum trees, and local wildlife, capturing the town's rural charm. Tess values supporting local businesses and prefers to shop in Marong whenever possible, only traveling to nearby Bendigo for items unavailable locally. Marong is often overlooked by travelers who only see the main highway and intersection, missing the town's true character.Overall, the document conveys a deep appreciation for Marong's community spirit, natural beauty, and the importance of supporting local life. The creek is not permanent, but it is a significant natural feature, especially near the town's sporting grounds. The town is characterized by a strong sense of community and high levels of volunteer involvement, particularly in maintaining sporting grounds and organizing local events. Community members actively participate in fundraising and improvement projects, such as raising money for a new hall and restoring the historic shire hall. The Marong Hotel, built around 1917, is a central landmark and was once one of three hotels in town. The town has a history of gold mining and is located on the edge of the Golden Triangle. The old shire hall is being restored to its original 1908 condition, reflecting pride in local heritage. Marong supports a wide range of sports clubs (footy, tennis, swimming, shooting, riding, trotting, cricket, and more), which are central to community life. The hotel serves as a hub for both locals and travelers, with regulars including sports club members and truck drivers who stop for food. The population is around 580 and growing, as more people move from nearby urban areas. Ongoing development includes new housing and community facilities. The town is a notable stop for interstate truck drivers due to a sharp bend requiring them to slow down, leading to a gathering spot outside the hotel. The presence of palm trees throughout the town is a distinctive feature, with some believed to have spread from the hotel’s original palms.Small Towns With Big Hearts Maiden Gully. Eaglehawk was first incorporated as a borough on 29 July 1862. It had nine councillors, who represented the entire borough. Councillors met at the Town Hall (incorporating the Star Cinema) at the intersection of Sailors Gully Road and Loddon Valley Highway, Eaglehawk. The Town hall has always been the centre of the Borough's activities and was built in 1901 on the site of an earlier town hall which had stood on the location since 1865. The Victorian Heritage Database notes: "The present building replaced this earlier building and was opened on 14 August 1901. The architects were the Melbourne firm of Wilkinson and Permewan. As a much larger and more sumptuous building of brick and stone featuring a central clock tower, the new hall reflected prevailing architectural fashion and was a remarkable investment for a town consisting predominantly of poor mining families. The condition of the town hall is substantially as built. The design is almost identical to the Castlemaine Town Hall." ... On 7 April 1994, the Borough of Eaglehawk was united with the City of Bendigo, the Shires of Huntly and Strathfieldsaye, and the Borough of Eaglehawk, parts of the Rural City of Marong, the Shires of McIvor and Metcalf to form the City of Greater Bendigo. ...On 7 April 1994, the Borough of Eaglehawk was united with the City of Bendigo, the Shires of Huntly and Strathfieldsaye, and the Borough of Eaglehawk, parts of the Rural City of Marong, the Shires of McIvor and Metcalf to form the City of Greater Bendigo. ...Eaglehawk is a hilly district, eight kilometres beyond central Bendigo, with many quartz lodes. The origin of its name is uncertain. It may have been named by a shepherd who killed an eaglehawk which attacked sheep, or by an early goldminer who observed an eaglehawk. Gold was discovered at Bendigo (Sandhurst) in October, 1851, and the gold-bearing land extended several kilometres north-west of Bendigo beyond Eaglehawk. One well-known goldfield was Eaglehawk Gully, dating from 1852. The community at Eaglehawk soon began to develop. On 29 July 1862 the Borough of Eaglehawk formed and in 1865 a Town Hall opened. By 1871 the population of Eaglehawk was 6,590. In 1887, when George Willan was Mayor, the Borough issued medals for Queen Victoria's jubilee (NU 20204-5 ), and in 1897, when E.C. Brown was Mayor, it again issued medals for Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee (NU 20453). The same year moves began to build a new Town Hall, but it took until 1901 for funds to be raised and construction to be completed. Further growth occurred in both the community and social institutions, and by 1903 the the population was 8,130. By then Eaglehawk was connected to Bendigo by steam tramway, and boasted post and money order facilities, three banks and a telegraph office. It had 'numerous hotels', three state schools, two private schools, nine churches, a court of petty sessions, a police station, two mechanics institutes, several organised societies and a park 'hansomely laid out with flower beds and shrubs'. The 'model borough' had 1,862 houses, and streets lit partly with gas and partly with kerosene. By 1947 the decline in gold mining had caused the population to fall to 4,090. Bendigo became more dominant as an employment centre. However, Eaglehawk still had nine hotels and as well had acquired an electric tram and public baths. The population reached its turn-of-the-century level again in 1991. By then the borough had become physically joined with suburban Bendigo. Its western boundary was the Loddon River and its eastern boundary enclosed Kangaroo Flat which after World War II had a population of about 1000 persons. By 1990 Kangaroo Flat had an estimated population of about 10,000, thus giving the shire a pronounced urban component. Accordingly, the shire was proclaimed a rural city on 1 October 1990. Marong shire had a mixture of agricultural districts, eucalypt forests and mining localities. There was gold mining at Maiden Gully, Wilson’s Reef near Marong, Neilborough and Sebastian. The mining borough of Raywood was united with the shire on 1 October 1915. Lockwood was the shire’s administrative centre until 1908, when the centre was transferred to Marong. Marong municipality was served by two railway lines from Bendigo: north-westerly to Bridgwater-on-Loddon (1876) and northerly to Raywood and Pyramid Hill (1882). The Calder and Loddon Valley highways run generally north-west through the former municipality, through undulating to flat terrain, suitable for cereal growing and grazing. South of the Calder Highway the land is undulating to gullied. At the far south-west the Laanecoorie Reservoir lies on the Loddon River. In 1994 Marong rural city, with an area of 1489 sq km, had about 9000 cattle, 240,000 sheep and lambs and 11,000 pigs. About 6800 tonnes of barley and 27,000 tonnes of wheat were harvested. On 7 April 1994, Marong rural city was united with Bendigo city, Eaglehawk borough and Huntly and Strathfieldsaye shires to form Greater Bendigo city."Moving Forward - Looking Back" by Ruth Hopkins. It began with an Osborne and Mitchell. After 1914 when mining declined, it became the Golden City Implement boundary and the name can still be seen painted on on the façade which faces the intersection of Marong Road (Calder highway) and Eaglehawk Road. The interior is a mass of used and un-used machinery scattered amongst modern lathes and more modern apparatus. The yard was a fascinating graveyard of past times, with old mining and agricultural scrap everywhere mixed up with coke and slag from the smelting sheds at the rear. A feature of the foundry was the manufacturer of cast iron lace. This document provides a historical and contemporary overview of the Osborne family's blacksmith and metalworking business in Bendigo, highlighting its longevity, operations, and significance: The business dates back to at least 1855, originally starting as a general store before evolving into a metalworking factory. The original founders were Osborne and Mitchell; Mitchell left early on, and the business changed hands several times before being acquired by Oscar Osborne (not related to the original Osborne founder). Oscar Osborne managed the machine shop and foundry, eventually acquiring it. His sons, Charles and Walter, now run the business with Stan, a descendant of the original founder. The current operators are Charles and Walter Osborne (brothers) and Stan (a descendant of the original founder but not directly related to the brothers). The business is known for its continuity and resilience, surviving as one of the oldest in Bendigo while others have disappeared or are newcomers. The workshop covers about a third of an acre and houses a large array of machinery and tools (nearly 200 between the three operators). The Osbornes pride themselves on traditional skills and methods, many of which are being lost in modern times. They are renowned for repairing a wide range of metal items, especially for antique dealers, and for producing high-quality crowbars and decorative iron lace for both restoration and new construction. Much of their work comes from Adelaide, and they maintain a steady demand for their specialized services. T he foundry and machine shop are considered landmarks in Bendigo, located on Eaglehawk Road opposite the Marong turn-off.The business was deeply embedded in the local community and history, with the Osborne name still prominent in the district.National Trust Survey Data Sheet and article from the Bendigo Advertiser November 4th 1981. Marong Shire City Council of Bendigo Council of Bendigo Bendigo Tramway Company Booklet concerning Modified Agreement between City of Bendigo, Borough of Eaglehawk, Shire of Marong and Bendigo Tramway Company. ...The Sandhurst and Electric Tramway Company was the first to blaze a trail when it introduced battery trams to Bendigo in June 1890. Unfortunately they had made a serious miscalculation, as the batteries quickly proved inadequate for the hilly terrain of Bendigo. After a couple of months battery trams ceased running and were later replaced by steam trams in February 1892. Steam trams were a reliable means of transport and successfully moved Bendigonians around for ten years, but the onset of the recession forced the Bendigo Tramways Company to sell up in 1899 to the Electric Supply Company of Victoria (ESCo) who continued to run steam trams until 1902. This turn-of-the-century sale led to the introduction of electric trams to Bendigo in April 1903. These were a success from the very beginning. During peak hour people would be standing in the aisles, in the doorways, even on the running boards on the outside of the tram. In addition, the trams were also the first option for deliveries. Parcels, newspapers, movie reels for the picture theatres and even mail bags found their way onto the trams; sent from outlying post offices to the GPO in the city centre. At the end of World War I the Victorian Government constituted the new semi-government instrumentality, the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SEC). The SEC was to take over all privately owned power generating companies in Victoria and operate as a state owned monopoly ... Bendigo's tramway system was an integral part of the deal. The outbreak of World War II was a testing time. Revenue and passenger numbers were declining as automobiles became more popular. Additionally, shortages in manpower and materials due to wartime economies caused difficulties. As a result, the SEC made several attempts at closing the tramways and handing over the passenger services to private bus operators. It took some time, but in July 1970 the Victorian Parliament finally granted the SEC's application for abandonment of the tramways. April 1972 marked the closure of the Bendigo Tramways as a commuter service and an estimated 20,000 people gathered to say an emotional farewell.Booklet concerning Modified Agreement between City of Bendigo, Borough of Eaglehawk, Shire of Marong and Bendigo Tramway Company.
