These cards were for use in connection with the Warrnambool Co-Op store. The Warrnambool Co-operative Society Limited was established in 1960 as the Allansford and District Artificial Breeders Co-operative Society Limited to provide herd improvement service to district farmers. In the mid 1970s the Co-Op opened a retail store in Warrnambool in Timor Street and gradually expanded, so that by the late 1990s they had 8000 members and employed 84 full time and 120 casual staff. The Co-Card enabled members to have trading arrangements with 200 other businesses. The Warrnambool Co-Op ceased operations in 2007.These cards are of interest as mementoes of the Warrnambool Co-Op, an important business concern in Warrnambool for over 40 years. The owner of the co-cards was Ronald Cumming. He and his wife. Leonie were members of the Historical Society for many years.These are two plasticised cards associated with the Warrnambool Co-Op. One is a Co-Card and the other is a Co-Op Charge Card used to receive discounts at other businesses. Both cards have bar codes. The larger card has a silver-coloured background with green printing and the smaller card is yellow with blue, black and yellow printing. A Colonist of 64 years, relict of the late William Shillinglaw and beloved mother of Phillip, Samuel, Margaret, Annie and Caroiline, Catherine Bottle (nee Shillinglaw), Sarah Aldous (nee Shillinglaw) and Elizabeth Docherty (nee Shillinglaw). Originally known as the Melbourne Cash Stores the general merchandise business of Younger and Co. was a dominant one in Liebig Street, Warrnambool from 1888 with the arrival in town of John Younger through to the store closure in 1983. John Younger was the director of the Warrnambool Woollen Mills in1903, the Mayor of Warrnambool in 1910 serving two terms and an elder of the Presbyterian Church. These labels are of importance as the John Younger store was a prominent business in Warrnambool for over ninety years..1 Rectangular cream and dark blue label with text. This memorial card follows a style that was commonly used in the 1890s. The size of the card make it useful for presentation and handing out. There was a remarkably large production of memorial and funeral cards in Australia during the latter 19th and early 20th centuries and the style did not change (and many of the styles are still in effect today). Many of the card companies, in this case ‘The Memorial Card Co.,’ located at 143 King St, Sydney, published standardised plates which had areas for customisation. The card has the area for name, photograph, date of death and age. Poetry was often standardised, but could be requested at the behest of the person who commissioned the card Isabella Battley (nee Goad) was born in 1867, in Smythesdale, Victoria, Australia. She was married to James E. Battley when she died aged 45. James E. Battley was a director of the butter Factory in Orbost in 1915. Their son Ernest Albert Battley enlisted in the AIF from Orbost in 1916. His father is listed as Next of Kin and his mother as deceased. James was remarried to Eda May Battley (born Sargent) in 1914. He passed away in 1925, at age 57 Memorial cards are often treasured for a long time, and often become part of family history. Webb, Mc Donald and Co., Engineers, Brassfounders, Sheet Metal Workers, Plumbers appear to be the forerunners of the firm of Webb Brothers and Co. which was as important business in Lava Street, Warrnambool in the early 20th century. The Webb Brothers were especially noted for their windmill making, establishing a business in South Melbourne in 1921.This luggage label is of some significance as it is the only item we have of the firm of Webb, McDonald and Co.Buff coloured rectangular label with dark blue text . Joseph Henry Abbott arrived in Australia from Birmingham England in 1852 aged 22 hoping to make his fortune on the goldfields. In 1853 he opened a store in Bendigo, Abbott and Co and from there began a lengthy career as a business man supplying the local community with goods and services including owning and operating the New Times Boot Market & Factory in Pall Mall, Sandhurst, run by his wife, Anne (nee Deague). J H Abbott’s main ambitions were to serve on the local and state councils. He was elected Chairman of the Sandhurst Borough Council in 1860, Mayor of the City of Bendigo in 1891 and was gazetted a Justice of the Peace in 1864. Over his lifetime J H Abbott was closely linked to nearly all the leading institutions in Bendigo and worked for the benefit of local charities. He was trustee of the Bendigo Art Gallery and a Freemason and was said to be the first person in Bendigo to have a telephone installed in1882 between his residence and his business in Pall Mall. After JH Abbott died in 1904 he passed on his businesses to his son JH Abbott Jnr and adopted son RHS Abbott. These businesses continued to trade under the name JH Abbott & Co and today still operates under the name Abbott Supply although the last of the family interests ceased in 1986. Abbott and Co acted as agents for larger Melbourne based suppliers such as Briscoe & Co and the Australian Explosives & Chemical Co. Bilson and Co. operated a general store in Murray Street, Colac with its history dating from 1884 to 1955. Originally founded by the Tulloh family it became known as Bilsons after 1889 when Franklin Bilson came from Allansford where he had operated a general store. Bilsons store became one of the largest stores in country Victoria. In 1952 Bilsons merged with Foy and Gibsons. and in 1955 the Foy Bilson business was sold. This label is of interest firstly because it is a memento of Bilson's stores an important 20th century business in country Victoria and secondly because Franklin Bilson and his wife, Fanny, both have their place in Warrnambool's history.Rectangular white label with dark blue text and some scroll decoration. This collection of items belonged to Emma Eliza Jane Watson's (bPhillips) son and daughter-in-law, John Richard and Edith Emma Watson (b Yung). Emma married Thomas William Watson at St Paul's Anglican Church , 11/11/1865.They lived in Sebastapol, Ballarat North and lastly at "Gracedale" Yendon - a small farm. They had 10 children and also brought up three grandhildren. .7 Emma Eliza Jane Phillips was born on 25th April 1844 in Barrabool (Geelong), the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Anne Phillips (b Goodenough). Sometime in the 1850"s after the death of Richard and the breakup of her marriage to Anthony Beck, Elizabeth moves to Ballarat with her children. The eldest boy Richard William Phillips would have been in his late teens. Elizabeth died on 4th August 1858 (aged 42?) before any of her children married.
