He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. Victoria Porcelain - Victoria is the name of the leading porcelain producing company of Austria. It was founded 1883 by a company called Lazarus and Rosenfeld ltd. In Bohemia, Austria. After 2 years the factory was sold to Franz Schmidt. It was under his ownership that the Vitoria factor became the largest porcelain producing factory of its times. The Victoria Austria round green mark was used between 1904 and 1918.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. It is one of many souvenirs produced to represent landmarks in the Albury-Wodonga district. The first punt across the Murray River at Albury was established by Robert Brown in 1843. In 1861 the first Union Bridge was built. It was demolished to make way for the second Union Bridge which opened in 1898. This second bridge closed and was eventually demolished after the third and existing bridge was opened in 1961. Hancock and Sons, Stoke on Trent - Sampson Hancock, a prominent Wesleyan Methodist, started potting in 1857. In 1891 he established the business of Sampson Hancock & Sons. Sampson died in 1900 and the business was continued by his three sons - Jabez, Harry and Arthur. In 1935 the business was in financial difficulty and was made bankrupt. It was restarted as S Hancock & Sons (Potters) Ltd. and moved to the Gordon Works, Hanley - which was renamed the Corona Works. The restarted company was not a success and it finally closed in 1937, having been put into receivership on 23rd March. The history of Murray Breweries Pty Ltd is intertwined with that of several northeast Victorian breweries and in particular that of the Albury Brewing and Malting Company and Billson’s Brewery which still operates in Beechworth. George Billson Jr. took over the “Albury and Wodonga Breweries" in 1879. His brother, Alfred Arthur Billson, took over the Beechworth brewery in 1882, trading as A A Billson and Co. In July 1888, George Billson combined his two breweries as the Albury Brewing and Malting Company Ltd. In 1911 the brothers combined to become Border United Co-operative Breweries Ltd. Towards the end of 1914, this company was liquidated and its operations transferred to the newly registered Murray Breweries Pty. Ltd. Murray Breweries immediately began down-sizing, closing the Tallangatta factory at the end of 1914, and selling the Albury brewery (which no longer brewed due to poor water quality) in 1920. The first half the twentieth century saw a decline in the production of alcoholic beverages, partly due to the Beer Excise tax of 1901 and competition from Melbourne breweries. The Temperance movement of the 1920s also pushed Murray Breweries to focus on the brewing of non-alcoholic cordials and aerated drinks. They also continued to produce the non-alcoholic herbal beer Ecks until the 1980s. In the closing decades of the 20th century the Brewery produced and home-delivered soft drinks, which were eventually replaced by bulk spring water sales and delivery under the name ‘Snowline mountain spring water.’ This artifact is representative of tradition manufacturing industries in Northeast Victoria.A clear glass lemonade bottle bearing the logo of Murray Breweries of Beechworth. The Border United Co-operative Breweries Limited was formed in 1911 by the amalgamation of The Albury Brewing and Malting Company Limited and The Anglo-Australian Brewery Company Proprietary Limited which operated breweries in Beechworth, Tallangatta and Yarrawonga. The Anglo-Australian Brewery was owned by the Billson family. By August the new plant was operating near the Union Bridge on the border of Victoria and NSW as shown in this photo. However the enterprise failed in August 1914 when not enough co-operative shares could be sold and also due to declining water quality. In December 1914 its spirit merchant’s license was transferred to the newly established Murray River Proprietary Company. In 1922, the brewery and 32 acres of land was sold to Mr E E Waite. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. MATE's WODONGA - T. H. Mate opened his first store in Albury in 1850. The company was sold to Burns Philp in 1946, although they continued trading as Mate’s. Burns Philp policy was to maintain the identity of stores they took over with the same staff and management. The Mate’s store in Wodonga was built by local builders A. B. and M. A. Chick. It was a 3 level development in High Street opposite Woodland Grove. It included a mezzanine eating area. Mate’s closed in 1976 when Burns Philp sold the business to Waltons. In 1987 they became Venture Stores. This building also later became Highpoint and Fosseys which closed in 2000. Rodd was an Australian company which was established in Melbourne by George Rodd in 1919. The early name of the company was G & E Rodd, and it made a large selection of jewellery and flatware. By the late 1930's they had become the leading manufacturing jewellers in Australia. Their items were marked with their trade name Apex. When the firm became a public company in 1948 the marking of their wares was changed to Rodd. The company became well known for its high-quality flatware or cutlery. He became a director and general manager of the company. He also served 9 years in local government. Bob was also a member of the Bread Manufacturers Council of N.S.W., the Australian and New Zealand Bread Manufacturers Association, and an employers representative on the N.S.W. Holdenson and Nielson Fresh Food Pty Ltd was founded in 1903 by Poul Jorgenson Holdenson and Andrew Nielson, after acquiring the Fresh Food and Storage Co, which had plants throughout Australia, including Albury. The plant was moved to Wodonga that year. Cream was collected from all areas of North East Victoria and the Riverina, with contractors carting it to the railway stations for rail travel to Wodonga. The Butter Factory was built on the Lincoln Causeway in 1926, and the Cheese Factory in 1942 as a wartime emergency project. At the same time, a pasteurising plant was installed in the complex, and so whole milk was collected from dairy farmers, rather than just cream. The company was bought out by the North Eastern Dairy Co-operative in 1962. It became a retail milk depot also involved in ice-making and cold storage. In 1985, Goulburn Murray bought the complex and as the site was surplus to requirements, it was sold to Wodonga Council. The buildings were adapted for other uses. The Butter Factory was modified and extended and for some time was occupied by the Albury- Wodonga Visitor Centre. The Creator's Gallery was established in the engine room, and the loading area and ice-making works were extended and modified for use as the HotHouse Theatre. The Cheese Factory was adapted for use as a theatre and jazz venue, and housed the HotHouse office. This 1941 Reo bus was owned by the Mylon Bus Company in Wodonga. The gas bag was used for fuel to compensate for the shortage of petrol during World War II. The Reo, powered by gas, could run 40 miles on 1,100 cubic feet. Albury and Wodonga Councils pruned back the trees so the bus could pull into the kerbs without tearing the gas bag, and the Albury Council put in a special gas pipeline to the corner of David Street where the bag could be refilled. Street lights could also cause a problem for the bag's safety. The driver in this image is Alf Jackson pictured with the Mylon boys, Phillip, David and Bernie. The Bank of Victoria was established in Wodonga during 1873. This two storey bank was constructed on the site in 1876. It later became the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney. In 1876 the Albury Banner and Wodonga Express reported that Mr. Nation had gained the contract for the erection of a new building for the Bank of Victoria, at Wodonga. The site secured for the bank was at the corner of South and Sydney streets, and immediately opposite the new Post and Telegraph Offices. The original bank was demolished in the 1950s and a new bank was built on the site. The new building was constructed with innovative foundations designed to prevent damage from vibrations caused by heavy transport vehicles along High Street which was then part of the Hume Highway. A contemporary newspaper article provides detail of the new bank. The well-lit building with open banking offices was designed by Melbourne architects, Turner and Stephenson, and combined a bright and attractive appearance with a stream-lined working layout. Alderson Swythyn Blackett-Smith, the manager of bank at time of move to new premises stated that the growth of the district and the bank’s business had made the old premises unsatisfactory due to insufficient space. The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney (CBC) merged with the National Bank of Australasia in 1982 to form the National Australia Bank and the second bank was closed. The building has since operated as several retail (including video hire and framing shop), commercial and community functions. It also includes a foreword written by Tim Fischer, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Trade and Member for Farrer and Lou Lieberman, Member for Indi.Haberfields began in 1931 as a milk delivery run purchased by Jock Haberfield and joined with a run operated by his girlfriend, Annie Gray. This study recounts the survival of Haberfields in the Great Depression and World War II, the many changes made in the collection, production and distribution of milk and related products in the 1950s and 1960s and the gradual handing over of the company to the following generations. The Ballarat-based firm, J Chatham and Co, serviced the Hotel Industry in Victoria, particularly Victoria’s Wimmera and Western Districts. Established by Jack { John} Chatham in 1956, The business was based at 7 Lydiard St South, Ballarat. As a regional hotel and motel broking specialist, Jack worked closely with other Ballarat businesses, including the Ballarat Brewery. On Jack's death in 1967, the business was taken over by his son, Philip, and renamed J Chatham Pty Ltd. The business continued to grow. Chatham House, the building the business operated from, and subsequently purchased and named, at 7 Lydiard St South, Ballarat still stands today. It was renamed by new owners in 2025 In the 1970's Philip opened a Melbourne branch in Dudley St, Nth Melbourne, The Melbourne branch, J Chatham and Daunt Pty Ltd, operated from 205 Victoria Parade, Fitzroy, a few blocks west of the Carlton United Brewery in the 1980s. In the late 1980s Philip's son, Andrew, joined the business, then called J Chatham, Daunt and Foley Pty Ltd. The business at this time operated from a terrace house [?Bouverie Street] Carlton near Grattan St. By 2005, the Daunt and Foley partnership had dissolved. In 2001 Philip predeceased his wife, Elizabeth Chatham (nee Holmes), a Director of the Company. His share of the business was inherited by Andrew. Elizabeth died in 2005. The business was sold in 2006. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. These tool kits were often carried by men so they were equipped to deal with minor repair jobs away from home. A variety of companies in Britain and Germany manufactured similar kits prior to WW2.A metal miniature tool kit including a screwdriver, an awl and 2 augers stored in a metal cylinder. The cylinder screws together in the centre. There is a central slot on each side of the cylinder sot that the end of each tool can be inserted. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Bicentennial Train hauled by Locomotive 3801 arriving at Albury Station, Locomotive 3801 was built by Sydney company The Clyde Engineering Co. Ltd., Granville in 1943 as the first of five streamlined (C) 38-class locomotives for the New South Wales Government Railways’ top-link express passenger duties. The delivery of 3801 was much delayed due to wartime labour & material shortages, together with competing wartime construction priorities. After many years of service, 3801 had been scheduled for withdrawal in 1962 due to deteriorating mechanical condition, but rail enthusiasts raised sufficient funds to cover the cost of its overhaul. 3801 joined the collection of the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum (NSWRTM), Enfield on withdrawal from NSWGR service and continued in operation as a tour locomotive. It hauled the “Western Endeavour” on the first crossing of the Australian continent by a standard gauge train from Sydney to Perth and return in August – September 1970. 3801 also stars in the railway film ‘A Steam Train Passes’ made by Film Australia in 1974 By 1976 had been withdrawn from service due to poor boiler condition and placed on static display by the Rail Transport Museum in Thirlmere, NSW. The Locomotive remained in Thirlmere until 1983 when it was decided it should be restored for the Australian Bicentenary in 1988. A new organisation was created specifically for the purpose of operating 3801, and thus 3801 Limited was incorporated on 5th June 1985. Work on the locomotive was completed after three years, with 3801 making its debut at a special Railway Ball hosted in its honour on 29th November 1986. During the Australian Bicentenary celebrations in 1988, it operated an extensive program across Australia visiting every mainland capital accessible by rail including an appearance at AusSteam ’88 in Melbourne in October 1988, stopping over in Wodonga on the way. After the company’s 20-year lease on the locomotive expired in 2006 Railcorp chose not to extend the agreement, and the locomotive returned to the Rail Transport Museum at Thirlmere (now the NSW Rail Museum). 3801 was withdrawn from service in 2007 for major boiler repairs. ROCLA was founded by two friends, Walter Robertson and Heaton Clarke, who combined the first letters of their surnames to create the brand name in 1922. The company first came to the Albury – Wodonga area in late 1927 when tenders were called for the construction of their works and office in Kiewa Street, Albury. They were a popular provider of concrete pipe culverts and reinforced concrete troughs for farm use. In 1949 ROCLA began operations at Bandiana. Initially this was to produce pipes for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme which officially began construction on 17 October 1949. They also provided pipes for the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. Another early major contract for ROCLA was with the Victorian State Rivers and Water Supply Commission for the provision of pipes for the new sewerage system in the new town of Tallangatta, relocated due to the enlargement of the Hume Weir. This contract called for the supply of 21,000 six inch pipes and 7,000 nine inch pipes. At this time ROCLA employed 15 men and this job required about 80 bags of cement per day. By 1964 ROCLA Concrete Pipes was Wodonga’s largest secondary industry. A new concrete pole manufacturing plant was established in the early 1980’s. ROCLA poles also dot the landscape in several Australian states. ROCLA piles also hold up many of the Hume Freeway bridge and support the Union Bridge which crosses the Murray River at Albury. After various changes in management, ROCLA was taken over by New Zealand's Fletcher Building group in 2005. In September 2021 ROCLA became part of the Civilmart Group. Hall's Bakery was established in Wodonga in 1930. In 1960, Bob Hall and Albury bakers Wynne and Thiel joined Bunge's Albury Flour Mills in forming a new company, Southern Border Bakeries. The three bakeries continued to operate separately, but in 1972 Southern Border built the Sunicrust Bakery in Kendall St. A strange anomaly in interstate trade regulations in the 1970s required some innovative thinking. In Victoria, it was illegal to transport bread over 75km, so to get around this, Sunicrust rented a shed in South Albury known at Southern Border Bakeries. Bread from Wodonga was transported to Albury in a semi-trailer loads of 10,000 units. It was unloaded and placed in the shed. A docket was written out and the bread was reloaded and was free to be sent back over the border and sent to Melbourne if need be. This manoeuvre complied with Section 92 of the Australian Constitution allowing free trade between States. By 1997, the Sunicrust bakery employed 100 people and produced 200,000 units a week. Goodman Fielder acquired the Sunicrust brand when they purchased Bunge Australia's baking and milling assets in late 1998. Gradually employment fell and Goodman Fielder decided that Wodonga was a small plant and it is no longer economically viable to keep it going. Baking ceased in 2007 with the loss of 44 jobs. This image shows High Street, Wodonga in the late 1950s to early 1960s. The view is taken looking southwards towards the Water Tower at the end of the street. Businesses visible in the image include Currans Shoe Store, Greens Shoe Repair, a barber store, Pat's Ladies Hairdresser and Beauty Parlour, Albury Drycleaners, Jim Costello's, Bye's Butchery, Cafe, Astor Electrical goods and Victorian Producers. It is an enlargement of a Rose Series postcard. This photograph is representative of many images representing High Street, Wodonga as it developed over time. The Rose Series of postcards is a series of postcards of scenes from around Australia and some international ones as well. They were produced by the Rose Stereograph Company, which was the business of Victorian photographer George Rose (1861-1942). In 1880, George, aged 19, founded his business in Victoria, and soon became famous for producing stereographs, or stereo views. His early images included the landing at Anzac Cove, Ned and Dan Kelly’s Armour (taken at trial in 1880), The Duke & Duchess of York and their daughter Princess Elizabeth and Phar Lap winning the Melbourne Cup. When stereographs lost popularity during the 1920s, Rose switched to the production of postcards and decorative cards. He and his team of photographers took thousands of photos of scenery around Victoria and beyond, and the postcards became iconic images of Australian life. The Rose Stereograph Company Collection comprising more than 100,000 items was auctioned by Lloyds in June 2021.
