Wodonga Shire was created in 1876 when the colonial government agreed to ratepayers' petitions to have their part of the local government district severed from the Yackandandah Shire to form a new municipality. In March 1973 Wodonga was declared as the first Rural City in Australia. This was officially proclaimed by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe at an open-air ceremony in Hovell Street following a procession along High Street led by the Victorian Police Band. The first meeting of the Council was held in the open air immediately after the Proclamation.These Seals are significant because they document different stages in the development of local government in Wodonga.Two wood and metal seals to endorse documents. This item was used as a seal (stamp) on official Shire Council documents. The coat of arms of the Shire of Orbost was designed in the form of a cross in which five stars are depicted on a shield. A small crown above the cross indicates the loyalty of the president,councillors and ratepayers to the reigning monarch. The inner section of the shield contains 4 figures, a sheaf of wheat, a factory, a co and a ship - all representing the activities of agriculture, fishing,industry and dairying undertaken in the shire. Originally part of the Bairnsdale district, Orbost split away as part of the Tambo Shire in 1882, and became a shire in its own right as the Shire of Croajingolong on 30th May,1892. The name was changed to the Shire of Orbost on 17th February, 1893. The Orbost Shire Council was abolished on 2nd December, 1994 as part of a state-wide program of local government reform to become part of the newly constituted East Gippsland Shire council.Local governments play an important role in the lives of citizens in Australia. Local government authorities exist to provide services and amenities to local communities, and are also responsible for regulating and providing services for land and property in their district. This small flag has been made by Brauer College in Warrnambool to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool and to mark the 84 years of Brauer College’s existence. Warrnambool was founded in 1847 as a planned town to provide port facilities for the export of produce of the local pastoralists and squatters. Brauer College began as the Warrnambool Technical School in 1913 with John King as the Principal and the original school buildings in Timor Street. In 1958 the school became the Warrnambool Technical College and today this site is occupied by the South West TAFE facility. The secondary school section of Warrnambool Technical College relocated to Caramut Road in Warrnambool and since 1990 has been known as Brauer College. It was named after a local prominent doctor and supporter of State Education – Dr Alfred Brauer. This flag is of some interest as a memento of Warrnambool’s 150th anniversary and of Brauer College’s part in this. This is a rectangular-shaped plastic flag attached with three metal staples to a circular-shaped wooden stick. The flag is green with white printing on both sides and contains the images of the Warrnambool City Council seal and the sea-horse emblem of Brauer College. On 28 February 1917, Sandringham was severed from Moorabbin and incorporated as the Borough of Sandringham. This chain was part of the official regalia worn by the Mayor of the City of Brighton before the amalgamation into Bayside City Council in 1994. The chain was seen as an outward sign of power, authority, and responsibility and was a formal, full-dress type of regalia that was worn by the mayor over their robes at ceremonial functions. The large central drop medallion featured the design of the council seal and the links of the chains detail the name and date of each appointed Mayor. This council seal features the Brighton coastline with a pier extending to the water, a sail boat in the distance and a train on the right of the pier. It was displayed by Council on its flag and letterhead and in municipal buildings and can still be seen on the portico of Brighton Town Hall. The seal was used from 1919, when Brighton was declared a city, until 1970, when an official crest was issued by the British College of Heraldry. Brighton was first incorporated as a borough on 18 January 1859, it became a town on 18 March 1887 and was proclaimed a city on 12 March 1919.9 carat yellow gold and enamel mayoral chain for the City of Brighton. Consists of 61 small oval links, with a scroll listing significant dates in Brighton's history as a centrepiece and a large 'drop' medallion of the City of Brighton seal below. Each oval link has a central plaque inscribed with a mayor's name and dates of their office surrounded by a thin coiled edge and a thick decorative border. The earliest Mayor is W.P. Francis 1918-19 and the latest is K.D. Oliver 1994-95. The links are joined by cable chain and form a long circular chain with two crosspieces of additional links at the back, the upper crosspiece contains four links, while the lower piece contains three links. The chain has a large oval medallion/pendant of the City of Brighton seal which is surrounded by a thin coiled gold edge, a border containing raised lettering 'CITY OF BRIGHTON' above and a Coat of Arms below. This is also surrounded by a coiled edge. The oval piece is then wrapped around with a thick laurel wreath with small berries. The central part of the medallion contains a coloured enamel image of the Brighton coastline with sand in the foreground, a pier extending out into the water, a sailboat in the distance and a train on the right of the pier. The Ballarat School of Mines was established in 1870,. It was the first School of Mines in Australia. The Associateship was held in high regard and recognised throughout the world. Stanley Browning Vial is listed no the Ballarat School of Mines Associateship Roll for 1903. Printed certificate on vellum, with handwritten details. This photograph is connected to the first HMAS Warrnambool J202, which was commissioned by the Royal Australian Navy for use as a minesweeper during World War II. The Bathurst Class Corvette, fitted out with a range of armaments, was launched in Sydney 1941. The ship began service in Bass Strait in 1941. At the end of the year it called into its namesake city, Warrnambool, where the crew paraded for the public marching eastwards along Timor Street. A gift of books for the ship’s personnel and a plaque bearing the City of Warrnambool’s Coat of Arms were presented to the ship. The ship was involved in evacuating a family of nine from the Dutch East Indies that was later successful in its challenge of Australia’s Immigration Restriction Act (White Australia Polity). The ship had many other appointments around Australia. On 13th September 1947 HMAS Warrnambool was leading a flotilla of minesweepers in northern Queensland’s coastal waters, clearing mines previously laid to defend Australia. The ship hit a mine, which exploded and very quickly sunk the ship. Boats from the nearby ships rescued most of the seamen although one was killed at the time. The survivors were taken by the HMAS Swan II to Darwin, and they went from there to hospitals in Brisbane and Sydney. Three of these men later died from their injuries. A number of items were recovered by Navy divers in 1948 including the ship’s bell and a plaque with Warrnambool’s Coat of Arms. In 1972-75 the wreck was sold and other items were salvaged. In 1995 a memorial plaque was erected in Warrnambool near the RSL. NOTE: The RAN built a second HMAS Warrnambool FCPB204, launched in 1981 and decommissioned in 2005. There was also a steam ship SS Warrnambool built in London 1892 and broken up in 1926. In 1995 a memorial plaque was erected in Warrnambool near the RSL. NOTE: The RAN built a second HMAS Warrnambool FCPB204, launched in 1981 and decommissioned in 2005. There was also a steam ship SS Warrnambool built in London 1892 and broken up in 1926. [A more detailed history can be found in our Collection Record 3477.] This speaking tube is an example of communication used in the mid-1900s on board a vessel. It is significant is significant for its association with Royal Australian Navy and its vessel, HMAS Warrnambool (J202). The HMAS Warrnambool played a nationally significant role in overturning Australia’s Immigration Restriction Act 1901 (colloquially known as the White Australia policy). The ship rescued, and brought to Australia, Samuel and Annie Jacob and their family after they evacuated Dutch East India. The family was threatened with deportation and made the first successful appeal to High Court regarding that Act. The HMAS Warrnambool has - Local significance for being the namesake of the City of Warrnambool - Local significance, having docked in Warrnambool Harbour - Local significance, the crew having paraded in Timor Street, Warrnambool - State significance for its first patrol being in Bass Strait. - National significance, being present in Timor at the Japanese surrender - National significance, shown by the significance of the ship’s bell being curated as Military Heritage and Technology at the Australian War Memorial. - National significance as part of Australia’s defence force history, being one of only four Bathurst class corvettes lost while in Australian service, the only Bathurst class corvette lost after World War II, the only RAN vessel to be sunk by a mine, and associated with the last four Navy deaths of WWIISpeaking tube or voice pipe, brass, conical shape, broken off at base. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand.
