Sarah Ann Dawe, née Carpenter, was the wife of William Dawe who ran a general store/greengrocery in Sussex Street, Linton, probably from the 1870s, and who also had mining interests. The Dawe family migrated to Victoria in 1857. They first lived at Geelong but are believed to have settled in Linton shortly after their daughter Mary Ann married Robert Simeon Nelson in 1864. The Dawe family shop is thought to have been in Sussex Street/Skipton Road, opposite Wishart's forge. W. Dawe is shown on the Township of Linton plan as the owner of Allotment 4, Section 1A. Municipal directories show "William Dawe, Fruiterer" in the 1880s, and from the 1890s "Thomas Dawe, Fruiterer". (Thomas was William Dawe's son.) Reports in the Ballarat Star in 1875 and 1876 show that along with his son-in-law Robert Simeon Nelson, William Dawe was was a partner in the 'Bristol Reef (or Bristol Quartz) Company'. From about 1901, the Dawe shop also briefly included the undertaking business run by William Dawe's grandson, R. S. Nelson (the younger). Frederick Napoli Prescott was a prominent Bendigo Optician and Jeweller. He was born and educated in Hobart before joining his father's jewellery and optical business. After studying in Europe to gain further qualifications he returned to Australia and opened a business at the corner of Mitchell and Hargreaves Street Bendigo. This clock was placed originally in what was called the "Billiard Room" of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Bendigo. There is no apparent connection to the RSL or Military service of F. Prescott. Frederick Napoli Prescott was a prominent Bendigo Optician and Jeweller at the corner of Mitchell and Hargreaves Street Bendigo. He was later in partnership with Mr C.M. Prescott and Dawe were operating on the corner of Mitchell and Hargreaves Streets, Bendigo. They were established in 1887. In 1906 when they were advertising their optometry aids, and in 1908 they were marketed as 'Art Jewelers'. This firm operated until at least 1950.EPNS tea-spoon in black leather-look case. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria.
