Dederang State School commenced in 1877 for the families and children of the district. It continues educating local children today.Dederang is part of the Upper Kiewa Valley. The Dederang-Mt. Beauty Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is an Australian rules football club playing in the Tallangatta & District Football League. The club is based in Dederang, Victoria and Mount Beauty, Victoria. It was formed in the early1900s and disbanded in 1976 when it merged with Mount Beauty to form Dederang-Mount Beauty football club. In 1948 the competition received a boost with an influx of new players who came to work on the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. George and Gordon Hobbs were the famous Hobbs brothers of Dederang which two Premierships were built around. Four brothers starred in Dederang’s First Flag in the Tallangatta League in 1958. Dederang Football Club was one of the earliest recorded football clubs in the Kiewa Valley area. Many players came from pioneering farming families in the area and there were often several boys from the same family playing in the team. The Dederang/Mt Beauty Football Club held a golden anniversary reunion at the Dederang Recreation Reserve to celebrate 50 years of football and affiliation with the Tallangatta League. The Dederang Race Club is a thoroughbred Race Club that manages a country racing venue in North East Victoria at the Dederang Recreation Reserve on the Kiewa Valley Highway. These races have been held annually since the mid 1850’s. The Dederang Picnic Race Club holds its one race meeting a year with the Dederang Cup in January. Thousands of dollars have been raised in that time for charity and the community through the effort of volunteers. The race club is made up of 100% volunteers and whilst not only organising the race meeting they voluntarily maintain the racecourse and facilities to a standard that allows local trainers to use the course throughout the year. The Catholic Church in Dederang began with services in peoples' homes whenever a priest was available 2 or 3 times a year. The priest would ride from Myrtleford. The first church was built in 1883 and was used by families in the Ovens, Kiewa and Mitta valleys.The church was used by residents in the Kiewa Valley. Early settlers came to Dederang from Kergunyah. The main road, Dederang to Tawonga was opened about 1860 - 1864, connecting 'Crosthwaite's Gap' with 'Smith's corner'. Initially in the 1880s, services (known as stations) were held at Creamer's home in Dederang - generally x3 per year.In 1883 a small church was built where the present church now stands.This weatherboard church, St Joseph's, was replaced by a brick one in 1914 and opened on 8th Nov. 1914. The first tennis courts to be built in Tawonga were at the primary school. The courts opposite the store were built in the mid 1930s on land donated by John Cooper. They were initially dirt courts and were concreted in the early 1940s.Tennis Club belonged to the Dederang and District Tennis Association in 1969-1970. Tennis was a popular sport for all ages, men and women, girls and boys.The trophy and flag were presented to the winners of the Tawonga Tennis Club who won their grade in the Dederang and District Tennis Association competition. These were then put on display in the club rooms indicating that the teams were winners and tennis a popular sport in the district. Tawonga's first recorded game was against Yackandandah in 1893 at Tawonga. Tawonga folded up in 1957 enabling Bogong to have 2 teams, the firsts and seconds in 1958. Bogong merged with Dederang in 1976 and became the Dederang-Mt Beauty Football Club. Bogong joined the Yackandandah league in 1947. In 1954 Bogong entered the Ovens & King League. In 1960 Bogong United was in the Tallangatta League with Tallangatta, Kiewa, Kergunyah, Dederang, Lavington, Bandiana, Bullioh, Mitta United, Barnawartha, Sandy Creek and Yackandandah. The Kiewa league was formed in 1923. In the 1930's Tawonga was in the Chiltern League then the Dederang League, then the Yackandandah League and then the Tallangatta League.The papers are a primary source of the history of the Bogong, Tawonga, Dederang and Mt Beauty Football Clubs. Dederang won the football premiership in 1912. Many country towns had a local football team that played against others in the district. Towns in the Kiewa Valley were big enough to field a football team. In the 1980s milk was collected by the North Eastern Dairy Company who graded the milk by temperature, weight in pounds and class A.B or C.The Farm was no. 355.Farm no. 355 was in Dederang where F. M. Hynes milked the cows. The Kiewa Valley was mostly a dairy farming district. The receipts also give insight into the methods of testing the quality of milk.A collection of receipts and notices from the dairy of F.M. Hynes at Dederang. 1. Scythe - Agricultural hand-tool for mowing grass or harvesting crops.Horse drawn machinery and tractors replaced the scythe. The scythe with the metal rod may have been fitted later, replacing a wooden rod. 2. Fern Hook - Used for slashing or reaping plants 3. Long handled sickle - A traditional single handed agricultural tool with a curved metal blade and handle. Used for harvesting. 4. Mattock - Heavy duty hand tool featuring a long handle and a stout dual-headed metal blade used in many ways eg. digging 5. Pitch Fork - An agricultural tool used to pitch loose material such as hay or leaves. 6. Pick Axe - A tool used to break and pry at the pointed end and the axe end for hoeing, skimming and chopping through roots.Douglas used these tools 70-80 years ago (1950s) mainly on his family's farm at Dandongadale near Buffalo River for harvesting as well as clearing land. Some may have been used on a family property at Whorouly as well and at the Dederang family properties from 1964. At Dederang the family had a tobacco farm and a dairy farm - (now 4 properties). Douglas Petzke had a soldier settlement farm in Dederang. Property was 'Woodside' about 1 km south east of the Dederang store. Douglad had 100 acres on each of the top and bottom sides. The bottom side was the dairy farm and the top side was beside House Creek. The farm totalled more than 200 acres. Douglas left Dederang c 2000 and now (2026) lives at Baranduda.1. The Port Phillip Gazette was the second newspaper published in Melbourne, in the then Port Phillip district, now Victoria. In 1948 it was published bi-weekly.The map shows the original names of squatters along the Kiewa River. Kiewa Valley Consolidated School was established in 1953 combining Dederang North, Kergunyah, Gundowring, Kiewa, Gundowring Upper, Red Bluff, Charleroi and Gundowing North schools on a 10 acre site with 11 rooms at Kiewa.The above schools are in the Kiewa Valley. School sports competitions were held annually with the winning school being acknowledged by being awarded 'the' shield. The shield was usually paid for through donations. It was donated back to be used again and the current winner's name added to the Shield.The names of the school teams indicate that the shield was competed for by the primary schools in the Kiewa Valley. The years are during the 1960s when many of the smaller schools still existed. The shield encouraged sports participation between the local schools and was supported by the local business - the Mount Beauty Co-operative.Wooden shield shaped plaque with large silver plated medallion in the centre surrounded by 12 smaller ones and 2 rectangular sterling silver small ones at the top centre of the shield. Catholics from Tawonga attended Mass at Dederang the area being part of the Myrtleford parish. With the coming of the State Electricity Commission and the increase in population Masses were said in various schools, homes and halls between Tawonga and Mt Beauty until the completion of St Joseph's ChurchSt Joseph's Catholic Church, Mt Beauty was consecrated on November 7th 1954. The SEC allocated land to each of the churches for them to provide their own places of worship. It was built by volunteers who donated money and their time to raise funds and build the church.1. Kergunyah is a small town in the Kiewa Valley in north east Victoria. It is 10km south of Kiewa (town) and 23 km north of Dederang (town). it is farming country commencing in 1838, developing into a small community in 1974 with a School, Church, Post Office, Football Club, Young Farmer Club C.W.A. Netball Club, Card Club and Fire Brigade.Kergunyah is in the Kiewa Valley. Its history is important in the valley as it developed from a large pastoral run in 1838 into a small community supporting the local farming industry with essential organisations eg. school, fire brigade and social organisations eg. sporting teams, C.W.A.. Its history is significant as this leaflet has details of the organisations up to 1974 and this detail can be compared to organisations at Kergunyah today and can be compared to the history of other small rural communities. The Mullindolingong school was opened in 1881 and was across the river from Tawonga State School with which it worked half-time from 1881 to 1894. The school was closed don from 1894 to 1923 in a different location. In 1949 it was renamed Coral Bank.It finally closed in 1954 and became part of Dederang School. Ref. This book was compiled by Esther Temple and David Lloyd with illustrations by Betty Barberis and additional material provided by Clare Roper, Joan Macdonald, Wilma Davies and Nell Bateman. The book was first penned in 1971. It briefly covers the period from the indigenous tribes(broken down into family groupings) known as the "first Australians" who lived in the valley well before English settlers arrived. first white settlement (graziers, miners, stockmen) to smaller settlements.The development or transformation from a pristine(hunter/gatherer) valley environment to one that has been gradually changing to a more commercial rural/industrial landscaped valley. This transformation was made within a time span of two hundred years. The book details the first pioneers and their descendants, along with the changes to their environments both domestic and commercial. The book highlights dates and events that shaped the "feel" of the valley. The extreme hardships faced by pioneer families during the extremely isolated times away from "civilisation".This publication provides an insight to the struggles and victories against the harsh Australian bushland by people who had not been raised in such a sometimes inhospitable environment. It was this transformation which instilled into the Australian psyche of self sufficiency and the ability to grasp onto ideas or "bush" remedies to overcome enormous difficulties. The town of Tawonga is in the Kiewa Valley surrounded by farmland. it is adjacent to Mt Beauty (built from 1946), an SECV town built for the workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme which was being constructed from 1911 to 1961. Tawonga consisted of essential amenities including a store, school, butter factory, sporting facilities, post office, hall and hotel. Activities involved sport, social get togethers eg. dances, fundraising, CWA etc. The posters are a collection of historical photos, documentations and information regarding the history of the town of Tawonga, which is the centre of a farming community in the Kiewa Valley.Posters framed with thin black plastic strip, covered by glass. The Chick brothers, Alf, Les and Allan, plus friends, began trout fishing and camping in the Kiewa Valley before the early 1930s. Les continued his connection with the Kiewa River until his death in 1972. Fingerlings were placed in the Kiewa River from the early 1880s. Keegan's Bridge is a crossing near Upper Gundowring and about 4 km south east of Dederang. References to the crossing were made in the early 1900s and a petition presented to Council in 1904 calling for a bridge.The bridge was built and opened in 1907. The photos are of the release of fingerling trout in the Kiewa River, thought to be at Keegan's Bridge. The fingerlings were transported in drums on the back of trucks. The photos are c1940s.The Kiewa Valley has been a popular spot for fishermen, tourists and campers from the 1880s. One of the many attractions has been the excellent fishing along the Kiewa River due to the regular release of fish especially brown trout. This continues to the present day (2020) when a few fish were marked with $$ signs for the lucky fisherman who caught them.
