THE MANNEQUIN The included wooden mannequin made by J.A. Walker of Melbourne has been very well used, as can be seen from the pin marks and split and torn fabric in areas where pins would have been used many times. The painted wood of the bodice is wearing away. The top of the neck is very rough in the centre, indicating that it possibly had a knob, handle or even a head shape on top. The mannequin could have been used for storing and cleaning of the evening outfit and even in the process of making it. It is made to match the measurements of the outfit beautifully and would be close in measurement to Mrs. Isabella Mitchell. Isabella’s sister-in-law Eliza Russell made her own wedding dress and perhaps she or Isabella herself made the evening outfit using the mannequin for fittings. The mannequin is significant as its size gives an image of the shape of the evening outfit’s owner. It is also significant as an example of the process and skills to create garments of fashion during the period, with many people making their own garments. During the reign of Queen Victoria, whose long and conspicuous grief over the death of her husband, Prince Albert, appropriate dress for men and women for the period of mourning was strictly prescribed and rigidly adhered to. Widows were expected to wear special clothes to indicate that they were in mourning for up to four years after the death, although a widow could choose to wear such attire for the rest of her life. To change the costume earlier was considered disrespectful to the deceased and, if the widow was still young and attractive, suggestive of potential sexual promiscuity. Those subject to the rules were slowly allowed to re-introduce conventional clothing at specific time periods; such stages were known by such terms as "full mourning", "half mourning", and similar descriptions. For half mourning, muted colours such as lilac, grey and lavender could be introduced.. Special caps and bonnets, usually in black or other dark colours, went with these ensembles. There was special mourning jewellery, often made of jet. By the late 20th century, this no longer applied, and black had been widely adopted by women in cities as a fashionable colour. From its beginnings in 1958, the Society has mounted exhibitions and/or displays, in early days in shop window and in community spaces located in the Kew City Hall (later Kew Library), and since 2010 at the Kew Court House. A wedding dress, forming part of a collection of costumes, photographs and documents relating to the Weir family who lived in a mansion, originally named Illapa, at 84 Princess Street, Kew, from c.1917 to 1950. This historically significant collection includes items relating to both George Weir (1866-1937), his wife Edith Mary Weir (1867-1948) and their children. George Weir attained national prominence in the mining industry, becoming General Manager of the North Broken Hill Silver Mining Company in 1903 (later renamed North Broken Hill Mining Company 1905-12, and North Broken Hill Ltd 1912-1988), and subsequently President of the Mine Owners Association. He was to remain General Manager of North Broken Hill Ltd until his retirement in 1926.This garment is part of a collection of women’s clothing, owned and worn by Edith Mary Weir (nee Betteridge) - born in Clare, South Australia 1867, died Kew 1948 - and also by her daughter. The garments date from the 1880s to the 1930s. The collection includes day dresses, evening dresses, evening coats, capes, and undergarments. As the wife and daughter of a mine manager, the collection includes representative examples of clothing worn by upper middle class Australian women in domestic circumstances, and at social and civic events. A number of the costumes from the 1920s to the 1930s are of a particularly fine quality, being both rare, representative and intact examples of Australian fashion of the period. Polyester shirts plus a green tie and epaulets were the only form of dress unform issued to FCV staff. In later years a brown tie was available. Blue work overalls and safety boots were issued for bushfire work. These were replaced with the now familiar bright green overalls in about 1984. There were no dress pants, jumpers, jackets or shoes issued. This led to a long running dispute between the staff association and the Commission over departmental uniform policy at the time. Unlike traditional design patterns, this project adopts a unique design approach. It selects 3-5 pieces of raw materials based on their colours, and then disassembles them through structural lines. While retaining most of their functionality, these materials are rearranged and assembled on a flat surface before being shaped on a dress form. Subsequently, various ways of creating storage bags are derived from the initial clothing prototypes. After refining the designs, the final products are developed, and similar materials are used to create samples. Therefore, under this design methodology, even for the same garment, it is impossible to produce two identical pieces of clothing. Each garment is truly one-of-a-kind, which enhances its rarity and contributes to the longevity of the fashion pieces. The project includes various types of clothing, each with unique storage methods. This yellow look, named "elegant beach sunscreen monarch," draws its fashion inspiration from traditional Han Chinese attire and its storage concept from the Chinese cultural concept of "jiu jiu gui yi." the design employs flat pattern cutting, utilizing materials from the second-hand market such as beach towels, children's waterproof clothing, and women's dresses. Similar colours and patterns are reassembled through cutting and combining. For the sleeves, quick-drying, sun-protective sport fabric forms the base, overlaid with discarded silk fabric dyed with turmeric and plant dyes. This not only ensures functionality but also adds a sense of elegance. The length can be adjusted using drawstrings. This belt was worn with the jacket issued to members of the Warrnambool Fire Brigade in the mid 20th century. The jacket was part of the uniform that served both as a dress uniform and a work uniform. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was formed in 1863 following unsuccessful attempts to establish a permanent fire service in the town. It was prompted by a fire at the Flying Buck Hotel in Liebig Street. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade, now located on the Mortlake Road, has been successful in Victorian Fire Brigade competitions and demonstrations, particularly in the 19th century. The owner of the belt and uniform was John (Jack) Sizeland, a member of the Warrnambool Fire Brigade for over 37 years. This belt is of interest as it was part of a Warrnambool Fire Brigade uniform during the second half of the 20th century. It also has individual local provenance as it belonged to Jack Sizeland, a member of the Warrnambool Fire Brigade who retired in 1977 after 37 years of service. This is a brown leather belt with a gold metal buckle and nine punched holes on the buckle, two of them hand-punched. It has a leather attachment to keep the belt end in place. It has the name of the owner, John Sizeland, written in biro on the inside of the belt. This belt is meant to be worn with the Warrnambool Fire Brigade jacket with the brass buttons. ‘J. Mt Beauty Workman's Club was formed in 1945, re-built and opened in 1954 and again in 1962 and 1968. The Bowls club was founded in 1970 and later was affiliated with the Victorian Ladies' Bowling Association (VLBA) and the North Eastern District LBA in 1974. There were strict rules regarding the Bowlers' uniform.The Mt Beauty Workman's Club was built by the SECV in 1945 to service their employees on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. As Mt Beauty grew it became the centre of activity for residents including the Bowling Club. Wedding dress and veil worn by Margaret Vyner at her wedding to Ian McKendrick on 11th January 1958The McKendrick family came to Mt Beauty very early in the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme (KHES) days. Their son, Ian, worked in the Mt Beauty Post Office for 40+ years. The Vyner family were long time employees of the SECV working on the KHES and were residents of Mt Beauty. Margaret was a nurse at the Tawonga District Hospital at the Tawonga site and at the Mt Beauty site.Long soft white taffeta under-skirt. The outer is cut on the cross, made of nylon and with a train and has appliqued lace of a flower and is beaded. The sleeves are long and shear. The taffeta bodice is fitted with a featured V waistline. The sleeves are pointed (to cover over the hand) with a flower applique. There are 5 pearl buttons down the back and are fastened with loops. The side zip is metal and on the right hand side and at the top there is a hook and eye. This ticket was used in the 1950's to gain entry into the Mount Beauty Cinema, located in the community Hall. This ticket was donated by the person who attended one film shown in this theatre. This was in an era where before the start of screening, the "British" anthem was played and all patrons were required to be up-stand. Sometimes if somebody was not standing the usher would advise the patron of their patriotic duties to the "Queen" required them to stand unless they were physically incapacitated. This act demonstrated the strong bond to "mother England". From the late 1960's onward this strong show of loyalty "faded away" into history.This theatre ticket is very significant to Mount Beauty because it was the access by the Kiewa Valley residents to "big city" movies. This was in a time frame when television was just beginning to be a popular household entertainment appliance. The Kiewa valley was for a very long time "out of range" for television reception and the only form of screen images were attending the Mount beauty Theatre (just like the big cities but on a more intimate level). Just like the city movie Theatres, the Mount Beauty Theatre, was the centre of the "after five o'clock" entertainment hub. This was a time when going to the theatre was a big event and townsfolk "got dressed up" for this special occasion.It was the gathering place for young and old.This thick cardboard Cinema ticket to the Mount Beauty Theatre (cinema) has two distinctive sections separated by a single perforation. One section for the doorkeeper and one section to "kindly retain". The colour is light green with black print. The ticket was printed by RENWICK PRIDE.On each side of the perforation is printed, "Mt. The Orbost Workers' Band and the Orbost Town Band amalgamated in 1913 to form the Orbost Municipal Band under the conductorship of Mr Charles Spink. This photo, taken in 1907, is probably of the orbost Town Band. In the photo are : Percy Watt, Geoff Beattie, Bill Gluth, Charles Spink, Bert McCay, R. Cotterill, Fred Smooker, George Draffin and Jin Lynn. The various Orbost bands have played a major role in the Orbost community activities as well as providing entertainment and musical experiences for the many members. In this image Sarah appears young and has a wide wedding band on her left ring finger which dates it to after her marriage to Charles Aldous in June 1880. By the mid 1880s dresses were becoming more tailor made and form fitting. Hair in the 1880 was plainly dressed, close to the head, with a small bun in the early eighties, and a higher one from 1885 suggesting early 1880s for this image, shortly after her marriage. A duplicate image is located on page 27 of the album. Stewart & Co operated from 217 Bourke St., East from 1871 to 1876 and from 217-219 from 1877 to 1889. Other locations included 42, 284 and 286. Overall, they operated in Melbourne from 1871 through at least 1910 though Carte-de-Visite photos were superseded by 1890. In this image the woman appears wearing a thick wedding band on her left hand. She has a similar resemblance to Sarah Ann Shillinglaw (nee Kidd) and could possibly be a sister. The only sister that the timeline would fit would be Caroline Fairlie Kidd who married Alexander Kirk Stewart 7 Apr 1885 at Richmond, Victoria. The family then lived at Diamond Creek.
