Historical information

This doll is part of a collection of dolls dressed in a form of national dress and sold as souvenirs of those countries. It is believed they belonged to a former teacher of Emerald Primary School who taught there in the 1950s. This doll is older than the others in the collection which seem to date around mid-20th century. People might collect souvenir dolls on their overseas travels as a reminder of the interesting and 'exotic' places they have been to.

Physical description

Doll dressed in traditional peasant costume, probably derived from an Eastern European country. White plaits tucked under red bonnet. Long-sleeved calico blouse. Blue and white striped apron over green tunic. White sox and red shoes. Doll is made with material stretched over possibly wooden frame. Legs jointed at the hips. Painted blue eyes, brown eyebrows and red 'rosebud' lips. Early to mid-20th century.
