Photographer Edward Sands operated from Jubilee Studio, 251 Nelson Place, Williamstown from 1899-1914 CABINET 1866-1905 The Cabinet photo was introduced in 1866 in answer to a demand for a larger format photograph which could be mounted for a cabinet or on the wall. They were 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches (11.5 x 16.5 cm), more than twice the size of the cdv. They cost about twice as much as a cdv but eventually displaced them. They were not extensively produced until 1880 and had ceased by 1905. The listing notes it as being kept my Mr A H Barnes The property consisted of 29 acres, the house of 8 rooms, kitchen, bathroom, vestibule, front and side passages, with verandah on front and side of building, also 3 roomed cottage with bathroom, 5 chalets containing 7 bedrooms, storeroom,wash house, water and gas laid on throughout. 4 stall stables and feed house, buggy shed for three buggies, motor shed for 4 cars, cow shed, and yards and pens. Local resident Mrs E Watson who attended school in the nearby public hall remembers going to a side window of the house and being able to purchase biscuits, sweets and drinks. The 1922-24 Handbook the listing was changed to "Grampians House" kept by Misses Allison and Porter. Edith's mother was Clara Emma Yung b Smith, also from Happy Valley. Edward Lancelot (Lance), Alfred Ernest (Alf) and Ernest Herbert (Ern) Yung were the sons of George Edgar Godlip Yung and Clara Emma Yung (b Smith). They were the brothers of Edith Emma Watson and Maude Holmes. This cash register was made in 1903 at Dayton, Ohio (USA) by the National Cash Register (NCR) company, which still operates today manufacturing commercial equipment, including Automatic Teller Machines. Mr. Thomas Watson, the founder of International Business Machines (IBM), started as a traveling salesman for NCR.This register came from a shop owned by Mrs. Dulcie Anderson near the Star Hotel in Walhalla. This cash register consists a brass register that is now heavenly tarnished. The register has two mechanical displays on the back and fore on the front.
