Jack Nobelius was the son of Carl Oscar Nobelius and Florence Cathleen Nobelius (Prescott). It dates approximately to the early 20th century. It may have been used as one of a pair for gymnastics or exercise, or part of a larger set used by a juggler for entertainment in a circus or carnival. At some time it may have been used with a ball or disc as part of a Skittles or bowling game set. The historical collection of Federation University Australia, Victoria, includes a very similar but slightly shorter club, labelled ‘timber skittle”, as can be seen in their photograph. Another example of very similar-shaped, same-sized clubs can be seen in the collection of Nobelius Heritage Park and Emerald Museum, Emerald, Victoria. He uses a wide variety of equipment in his acts including juggling clubs. EXERCISE Exercise clubs or Indian clubs were used in 19th century Victorian times as part of exercise or strengthening programs when they were swung in certain patterns and movements. Even in the early 20th century workplace a few minutes of Indian club swinging was common practice for the relief of tension. A video clip of an American school room in 1904 shows a group of boys and girls skilfully wielding clubs in an exercise sequence (see ‘Links” section). The 1904 and 1932 Olympic Games had an event called Club Swinging. Rhythmic gymnastics was added to the Olympic Program at the L.A. Games in 1984 where competitors use apparatus such as rope, hoop, ball, ribbon and clubs. The clubs come in a variety of weights and heights and have been used from the mid-1800s until around the 1930s in schools and military institutions. They are decorated in a variety of patterns and colours and some have feature lines or scored rings on them. This juggling club is significant for its association with education, entertainment and sport in the late 19th and early 20th century.Wooden juggling club (or pin, skittle or Indian club). Vintage, bottle-shaped club with a flat, slightly concave, base. Its turned, solid timber body tapers out from the base then in again to a very narrow handle with a round knob joined onto the top. Two concentric feature lines are scored into the wider part of club. It was possibly used in exercise, gymnastics or as a skittle. Sections of the club have two brown painted stripes; paint on the lower strip has been worn off at the base . There are remnants of white paint in two areas, possibly the remains of a maker’s name or decoration. There also appears to be an inscription stamped into the wooden handle but this is illegible. Marsden (seated). Gus Ryberg was a prominent citizen of the Emerald region; receiving an Order of Australia medal for services to the local community in 1996. Early in his career he worked for the Gembrook Nurseries, which after his retirement led him to lobby for the last section of the land occupied by the nurseries to be formed into a public park with a purpose-built museum. Ryberg was responsible for many of the plantings in the resulting Nobelius Heritage Estate. After his death a Canadian Maple was planted in his honour with an accompanying memorial plaque. The records also indicate the photograph may relate to the Shire of Sherbrooke Community Awards. The Shire of Sherbrooke existed from 1964 to 1994. It has a high interpretive capacity as an object associated with a tangible, physical process, presenting opportunities for understanding work practices at Nobelius Nursery and nurseries more generally.No similar name plate maker was identified after contact with and/or searches of collections held at National Museum of Australia, Museum Victoria, the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences or the Australian Garden History Society, Victoria Branch. It is a rare example of its type in Australia. The name plate maker is of historic and social significance. It is associated with the Nobelius Nursery, the largest nursery in the southern hemisphere at its peak prior to WWI (Lyng 1927:75), where it was used from the early 1900s until at least the 1940s. The Nursery was renowned for its supply of plants and trees of high quality and reliability; the name plate maker was part of this process by providing imprinted metal labels that did not fade. The object therefore also demonstrates technological advances of the period. The object holds social significance to employees of Nobelius Nursery who used the machine for several decades to prepare stock for transport to clients.This name plate maker has a hollow hardwood rectangle body and stands on four decorative cast iron legs. It has a cast iron top and further cast iron detail on its front and sides. The top detail lists all numbers and letters to be used in the production of the labels (A-Z, 0-9, space, finish, start and - , ‘), and the front detail reads ‘THIS MACHINE IS SOLD FOR USE IN THE UNITED STATES ONLY. PATENTED NOV. 19 1901, NOV 19 1901, NOV 22 1904, JAN 31 1905 PAT. APPL’D FOR’. The side detail reads ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ The inside of the box contains the metal and wooden mechanisms for making embossed metal labels, which are produced inside and then come out the front once printed. Several metal labels remain sitting in the dispensing hollow. This machine is a Roovers ‘name plate’ maker or ‘nameplate’ machine, also known as an ‘embossing machine’ or as in the original patent application as a ‘die press’. It was manufactured from about 1895 by a firm called Roovers Bros Co., of New York, later known as Roovers Bros Inc. Carl Axel Nobelius imported this name plate machine from the USA, indicated by the plate of text at the front, between 1905 and 1915. It is likely that the machine was ordered directly from the manufacturer, as there is no record of the company having had distributors in Australia. The nameplate maker remained at the former nursery site throughout its changes in ownership, until it was donated to Emerald Museum in the 1970s. This machine was used to create metal labels for tree stock at Nobelius Nursery to identify produce, which were otherwise difficult to distinguish as seedlings. He built a log cabin in Emerald which he would use on weekends.Dr Bottomley was a member of two syndicates who purchased land from Carl Axel Nobelius nursery property. Emerald Pty Ltd purchased 600 acres and with it developed the Emerald Country Club, including a golf course and properties. From 1938 to 1940 he was an assistant propagator. The letters of reference are written by (1) Ronald Lloyd, Vicar of St Mark's, dated 16 November 1936; (2) and (3) F.G. Wood, foreman propagator, Nobelius Nursery, dated 19 August 1940 and 17 April 1941. The letter from Harcourt State School, dated 14 June 1943, is addressed to Emerald State School seeking information about Ron Nicholls, with whom he has been corresponding while Nicholls was in New Guinea with the RAAF. The foolscap sheet contains a list of names of Emerald residents included in correspondence from Ron Nicholls' mother during the war (see below under 'Other information'), and further details about Ron's life. The hand-written remnant was written by Ron Nicholls to his mother from Emerald when he was a child. The news clippings describe (1) a children's fancy dress night held at Emerald School; (2) a coming of age party held for Jack Hirst; and (3) injury received by Geoffrey Kennedy of Macclesfield, when gored by a bull. Walter (Wally) Baguley 1920-1994 joined the military forces in 1940 under the title of Citizen Military Services Personnel. Earlier in his life, he worked for the Nobelius Nurseries where he became skilled at grafting. Later, he worked with the Postmaster General's Department.Item is in good condition. The Baguley family are long term residents of the Emerald District. Walter Baguley served with the Citizen Military Services Personnel during World War II and this belt may date from that time and may have been used by him.Khaki Green fabric belt. The Nobelius Nurseries had a substantial impact on the development of the township of Emerald, as local farmers were able to earn funds during the winter by working at the nursery which gave them financial resources while waiting for their own farms to become productive. The need to transport plants and trees to port quickly also contributed to the development of rail infrastructure in the region; C.A. Nobelius was one of thirteen witnesses to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways in 1898 debating a rail connection between Gembrook and Ferntree Gully, which became today's Puffing Billy tourist service. The nurseries occupied 280 acres at their peak in 1905, with more than one million trees available for sale at that time. The nursery focused on exotic fruit and ornamental species which were supplied to public parks and gardens all over the world. In several cases the nurseries were the first suppliers of the trees in Australia. Sales records show that trees were supplied to clients in Europe, Asia, the United States, Africa and New Zealand, as well as to many Councils and Government organisations around Australia, such as Melbourne's Fitzroy Gardens and Royal Botanic Gardens. It was called the Gembrook Nurseries as it was located in the Parish of Gembrook, but it was commonly referred to as the Nobelius nurseries after its founder; especially as control of the remaining portions of the nurseries remained with the Nobelius family until 1955. The Nobelius Nurseries had a substantial impact on the development of the township of Emerald, as local farmers were able to earn funds during the winter by working at the nursery which gave them financial resources while waiting for their own farms to become productive. The need to transport plants and trees to port quickly also contributed to the development of rail infrastructure in the region; C.A. Nobelius was one of thirteen witnesses to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways in 1898 debating a rail connection between Gembrook and Ferntree Gully, which became today's Puffing Billy tourist service. The nurseries occupied 280 acres at their peak in 1905, with more than one million trees available for sale at that time. The nursery focused on exotic fruit and ornamental species which were supplied to public parks and gardens all over the world. In several cases the nurseries were the first suppliers of the trees in Australia. Sales records show that trees were supplied to clients in Europe, Asia, the United States, Africa and New Zealand, as well as to many Councils and Government organisations around Australia, such as Melbourne's Fitzroy Gardens and Royal Botanic Gardens. Emerald Museum records indicate that this photograph of the Gembrook Nursery was taken in the vicinity of Carramar, the family home built by Carl Axel Nobelius. The sixteen-room mansion was one of the premier estates in the region and was visited by guests including Dame Nellie Melba and the Governor of Victoria, Sir Reginald Talbot. The building still stands amongst gardens that feature original Gembrook Nurseries plantings. Portions of the Gembrook Nurseries (and the Carramar estate) were sold at different times throughout the Twentieth Century, with the Emerald Country Club and Emerald Lake Park both occupying portions of the original land. In 1981 the final twelve acres were purchased by the Shire of Sherbrooke in recognition to be used as a heritage landmark in recognition of the site's significance.The photograph is significant because it depicts the built environment and stock cultivation at the Gembrook Nurseries during the early decades of the Twentieth Century; a period in which the nurseries were the leading Southern-hemisphere supplier of plants and trees to public gardens around the world.
