Dorothy Edhouse was the only child of James & Frances Hill, who were Sylvia Woodhead's grandparents. "James Hill (Jimmy) came to Phillip Island in 1920 and purchased the Hotel, known as Woods Family Hotel. (Later, the Phillip Island Hotel in Walpole Street, now demolished). A milestone occurred whilst in his capable hands, when he installed an electric light plant, (32 volt), the first on the Island. He also made hundreds of cement bricks, when he built his own home. Later he purchased a building in Thompson Avenue, where he established a Billiard Saloon, with a small shop attached. He died in 1937, aged 68. His only child Dorothy Edhouse, is now 95 and has made arrangements to have her ashes added to her fathers' grave." This was added to the photograph of James Hill and Frances Edith Hill - not sure what date it was compiled by Richard Woodhead. Frances died in 1960. The write up was take from "Garden of Memories" by Edith Jeffrey. Four documents/photograph relating to Cr J O Edhouse and his wife Mrs Dorothy Edhouse. Also came with accompanying letter from Sylvia Woodhead. 361-01: An Invitation to a Dinner at the Isle of Wight Hotel - 26/11/1943 - on the occassion of the visit of Delegates to the Gippsland Shires and Boroughs Development Association Annual Conference. 361-03: Identity Card for Dorothy Symes Edhouse. 361-04: Circular from the Liquid Fuel Control Board dated 21st February 1942. 361-05: Photograph of James & Frances Edith Hill. Although the land for the cemetery was granted in 1870, a survey was not made until 1903 hence the existence of unmarked graves. 466-09 A disastrous fire swept through the cemetery in 1943, destroying many structures around the graves - hence the rule "no wooden structures". the Hitching Posts were used for tying up hrses during a funeral service. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.4 photographs relating to the McHaffie family. 466-15 & 466-16: Noel Wemyss & Vernon Suter Wemyss McHaffie were grandchildren of the first permanent European Settlers of Phillip Island (John David & Georgianna McHarrie who leased the whole Island as a sheep and cattle run for 45 years until Closer Settlement in 1868 reduced their holding to 640 acres and who are buried at the St. Kilda Cemetery, Melbourne). Noel's ashes are interred at the Phillip Island Cemetery and Vernon's were scattered at Ventnor Philip Island at the site of the original homestead. 466-17 & 466-18: As per the Plaque: "Mulberry Tree: Muberry cutting from original tree planted by John D McHaffie First Settlers Phillip Island 1842. Commander M Batterham OBE RANVR was born in 1906 and later attended Geelong Grammar School. First attempt to join RAN was unsuccessful, due to health reasons. In 1942 he joined the Naval Volunteer Reserve. This was the beginning of a naval career which extended to peace-time in Canberra. He was awarded the OBE in 1952 for courage and devotion to duty. A light blue document titled "Bendigo Teachers' College Graduation Ceremony 1956". Also on the front page is a list of the staff working at the college. On the inside cover is the "Significance of the Ceremony" and the "Order of the Ceremony". A welcome to visitors was given by Mr. F. M. Courtis and the Principal gave the college charge. The signing of the 'Graduation Book' was presented to Mr. A. L. Harris Inspector of Schools, by Miss J. C. Burnett. The final call of the roll for 1956 was given by Mr. C. L. Barker. Congratulations were offered by the Mayor Cr. A .S. Craig and Mr. S. J. Tongway Head Teacher of Gravel Hill State School. Finally the Occasional Address was presented by Mr. J. G. Cannon Chief Inspector of Primary Schools. The next page has a list of the "Students of 1955-56". The back page has the "Principal's Charge". Bolton Bros., Printers, Bendigo. Front page - The large photo is of nurses in uniform, marching more than 20 abreast. They join the [26,000] who were taking part in the Anzac Day march to the Shrine of Remembrance. Back page - Governor, Sir Dallas Brooks, opens the War Nurses' Memorial Centre on Feb 19 1950. A large crowd included those from the nursing and medical professions, the services as well as Lady and Miss Brooks and other dignitaries. During the service of dedication two addresses were given, with Miss Sage, Matron in Chief of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Service (RAANS), speaking on the courage, loyalty and devotion to duty that the nurses showed during the 1939-46 war. Miss Betty Jeffrey is the administrative officer of the centre that is available for use by all nursing organisations, including accommodations for nurses travelling from the country or out of state.Two newspaper clippings have been glued to either side of a lined sheet of paper.
