This book was owned by Alf Gresham Johnston who was a former SMB mining student from the Ballarat School of Mines. He died at the age of 29 during military service in South Africa. Johnston's gone. The news came as a shock to all of us at the school. He who was with us a few short months ago, in all strength of sturdy manhood, has met a soldier's death in South Africa, and we sincerely mourn his loss…. His heart was in the school, and he did his best to further its interests … His last act on leaving Australian shores was to send a telegram from Albany to Prof. Mica Smith, to whom he was warmly attached, wishing the School and all connected with it "Good-bye". In his short, all to short, life of 29 years, he had more adventure than falls the lot of most men, and possibly the spirit of adventure, and also, of duty, prompted him to throw in his lot with the "colors," and leave for the front. In the early years of the 20th century adequate technical education was lacking and became a focus in the Victorian Parliament. After much debate and discussion among politicians and educationalists, the 1910 Education Act No 2301 was passed, making possible the establishment of new technical schools to address the dearth of skilled trades people. In July 1912 Collingwood Technical School opened in the modified bluestone buildings at 35 Johnston St, originally built in 1853 as the Collingwood Town Hall and Court House. Within three weeks, there were 57 boys enrolled - studying preliminary carpentry and pattern-making, plumbing, engineering, sheet iron work and bricklaying. They attended two hours a night on three evenings a week. In 1913, the school opened its doors to juniors and took residence in new permanent buildings erected on the site. It was classified as a trades school by the State Education Department. Two years later courses in electrical wiring and electrical and mechanical engineering were introduced. In 1988 Preston College of TAFE and Collingwood College of TAFE merged to become Northern Metropolitan Institute of TAFE (NMIT). Adams jnr wrote many elementary scientific works, as well as on the use of mathematical instruments. He often combined in his written works with religious themes and scientific content, often against the prevailing thoughts of the time. According to one popular magazine of the time (Gentleman's Magazine), his works were often accused of "growing errors of materialism, infidelity, and anarchy". He started writing at a young age and developed a love for it, his main interests included math and science, these subjects he often expressed in his written essay's. Notable works from Adams are. An Essay on Electricity, and Magnetism (1784). Essays on the Microscope (1787). An Essay on Vision, briefly explaining the fabric of the eye (1789). Astronomical and Geographical Essays (1790). A Short Dissertation on the Barometer (1790). Geometrical and Graphical Essays, containing a description of the mathematical instruments used in geometry, civil and military surveying, leveling and perspective (1790). Lectures on Natural and Experimental Philosophy, in five volumes (1794).George Adams Sr and Jnr were both notable opticians and scientific instrument makers of the 18th century. Their contribution to scientific innovation and optical development cannot be underestimated. Having one of their early drainage levels in the collection and in extremely good condition is an asset to the Flagstaff collection.Drainage level or optical level. This photo shows Charles Henry “Mick” Morris in the Morris cellar at Mia Mia near Rutherglen, Victoria. Charles Henry “Mick” Morris was born in Rutherglen, Victoria on 1st July 1928, son of Charles Tempest George Morris and Daisy Chambers. The Morris winery was started by Mick’s great grandfather, George Francis Morris who arrived in Australia in 1852. He immediately set off for the goldfields but found more profit from selling supplies to the goldfields. He purchased land in Rutherglen in 1859. By 1894 he had the biggest cellars in Australia. Mick Morris is a 4th generation wine maker. He was educated at Gooramadda Primary School, then at Rutherglen Higher Elementary School before attending Scotch College in Melbourne. He became the first member of his family to gain a university education, gaining a Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Melbourne in 1950 before completing an Oenology Course at Roseworthy Agricultural College in South Australia. Mick returned to Mia Mia in 1952 where his first role was working in the vineyard. By the end of 1953 he had become the “semi-official” winemaker at Mia Mia. From that time his career as a widely recognised winemaker went from strength to strength, winning many prestigious awards. Mick is recognised as a pioneer of the Durif grape variety. In 1993 Mick’s son, David became a 5th generation winemaker. Morris is famous for producing some of the world’s finest fortified wines. Away from the wine industry Mick has a strong interest in sport, particularly football. Since 1933, the Morris Medal for the Best and Fairest Player in the Ovens and Murray League has been awarded annually. This award was instigated by Charles Hughes Morris, Mick’s grandfather. Mick also played in the league. Morris Wines of Rutherglen were purchased by Casella Family Brands in 2016. This image depicts a renowned winemaker of Rutherglen who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of the Australian wine industry.
