Silver Springs Lodge was owned and managed by prominent Emerald residents, William and Olive Hamilton, during the 1940s and 1950s. The guest dwelling occupied stunning real estate along Emerald Lakeside. Guests were offered a variety of entertainment and access to activities including pianola, radio, swimming, tennis, riding, golf, car trips and home cooking. Weekly tariffs ranged from ₤4-10 and ₤4-15. It is believed the postcard was produced by the Valentine Publishing Co., inferred by the company's unique identifier — the letter 'V' followed by numbers — which appear on the obverse, as well as the word "Valentine's" which is printed on the reverse. This inscription is akin to examples of Valentine Publishing Co. postcards in other collections, such as the Kew Historical Society Inc. and Phillip Island and District Historical Society Inc.The record holds very strong historic significance as it speaks to the transformation of the Dandenong foothills into a popular tourist destination in Victoria. Particularly, the Silver Springs Lodge was an early tourist enterprise in region which had previously been dominated by industries of timber, gold and horticulture. The record is particularly significant for how it documents this important metamorphosis of Emerald into a key location for tourism. Furthermore, the postcard offers some research potential into the commercialisation of housing and its wider socioeconomic impacts on the local community, particularly in our current climate of short-term holiday rentals like AirBnB and Stayz.Black and white rectangular postcard printed on card. The foreground of the photograph shows a small, open pedestrian gate framed by two brick columns with signage, and leads down a narrow footpath to the front door to the lodge. Two female adults, one who is named Gwen, and three children, one of whom is named Tom, are pictured standing near the front door to the guest lodge. The dwelling is constructed from a mix of bricks and weatherboard panels and is surrounded by trees, plants and shrubs. At the rear of the dwelling appears to be a smaller, detached building; possibly a type of granny flat or second guest house. The transparency was taken by Olive Hamilton who was a prominent local figure during the 1940s and 1950s. Olive was also president of the Victorian Amateur Cine Society Ladies Auxiliary. Carl Axel Nobelius established the Gembrook Nurseries in 1886 on sixty-three acres purchased from an original selector after the area's gold rush started to diminish. It was called the Gembrook Nurseries as it was located in the Parish of Gembrook, but it was commonly referred to as the Nobelius nurseries after its founder; especially as control of the remaining portions of the nurseries remained with the Nobelius family until 1955. The nurseries occupied 280 acres at their peak in 1905, with more than one million trees available for sale at that time. The nursery focused on exotic fruit and ornamental species which were supplied to public parks and gardens all over the world. In several cases the nurseries were the first suppliers of the trees in Australia. Sales records show that trees were supplied to clients in Europe, Asia, the United States, Africa and New Zealand, as well as to many Councils and Government organisations around Australia, such as Melbourne's Fitzroy Gardens and Royal Botanic Gardens. This photograph shows a postcard from the Rose Stereograph Company's "Rose Series". Victorian photographer George Rose started the Rose Stereograph Company in the 1880s and produced stereographic views (an early form of 3D image production) of the Western Front during the First World War but switched to producing postcards in the 1920s. Photographers for the company produced thousands of views of Victoria and locations interstate during the following decades.The postcard is significant because it depicts the built environment and gardens at the Gembrook Nurseries during the early decades of the Twentieth Century; a period in which the nurseries were the leading Southern-hemisphere supplier of plants and trees to public gardens around the world.Black and white rectangular postcard printed on card. Museum records indicate that the people in the photograph may include Gus Ryberg, Margaret Lecte, R. Tindale and R. Marsden (seated). Gus Ryberg was a prominent citizen of the Emerald region; receiving an Order of Australia medal for services to the local community in 1996. Early in his career he worked for the Gembrook Nurseries, which after his retirement led him to lobby for the last section of the land occupied by the nurseries to be formed into a public park with a purpose-built museum. Ryberg was responsible for many of the plantings in the resulting Nobelius Heritage Estate. After his death a Canadian Maple was planted in his honour with an accompanying memorial plaque. The records also indicate the photograph may relate to the Shire of Sherbrooke Community Awards. The Shire of Sherbrooke existed from 1964 to 1994. Prior to 1964 it was part of Fern Tree Gully Shire (an Honours board from this period is visible in the photograph) and after 1994 it became part of the Shire of Yarra Ranges.This photograph is significant as it may depict people attending a Community Awards ceremony at the Shire of Sherbrooke offices prior to the Shire's amalgamation into the Shire of Yarra Ranges in 1994.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on photographic paper. The photograph has a historical significance as Maud Legg-Rowe's connection to Emerald goes all the way back to the 1850s, when her great-grandparents, Sara and James Watson, first came to Australia from England on the ship Whitby. They had eight children; the youngest girl, Emerald Watson, was her grandmother. Emerald married Henry Legg, and they had ten children, including Maud. Maud's first child was David who was born in 1939/40 when she was twenty-three.
