As a result of a group of European expatriates settling in Sunbury in the 1970s and wanting to play soccer, the Sunbury United Sporting Club was formed in 1972 with the first games played on the Aussies Rules ground in Evans Street (now the Sunbury Shopping Square). After cooperation between Shire of Bulla Council to acquire an open area of land in Michells Lane, the club moved to their own ground, Langama Park in 1975. Since that date, the club has grown and today there are 3 senior and 2 junior pitches as well as 2 cricket pitches and comfortable clubrooms on the area.Sunbury United Sporting Club was one of the first Soccer Clubs to be established in the district.A scanned non-digital coloured photograph of the Sunbury United Football Club. Sunbury United Soccer Club was established in 1973 by a group of expatriate Europeans who wanted to play the game they grew up with. Their first games were played on the recreation reserve in Evans Street on the ground designed for AFL football. (Now the site of a shopping complex). In August 1975, Sunbury United moved to its present home on seven and a half acres of sporting ground at Langama Park in Mitchells Lane . Over the years that area has developed and there are now three senior, and two junior soccer pitches with two cricket pitches and practice nets. Although there is still room for improvement to the floodlighting on the main pitch, the night games have proven successful. The Sunbury United Soccer Club has played an important roll in district competition and is one of the many sporting clubs in Sunbury.A non-digital black and white photograph of a soccer ground showing a set of goal posts with the clubrooms and change rooms in the background.soccer, sunbury united soccer club, football, langama park, mitchells lane

An Authors Love Author: Prosper Merimee's Publisher: Macmillan And Co Date: 1889 Further Information: Being the unpublished letters of Prosper Merimee's 'Inconnue'fictionThe book is an epistolary novel (a story told in letters) written by the American author Elizabeth Balch (though it was published anonymously at the time). It was written as a highly clever literary hoax and a sequel of sorts to a major 1873 French literary sensation, Lettres à une Inconnue (Letters to an Unknown) by the famous French dramatist and short-story writer Prosper Mérimée (best known as the author of the novella Carmen). Mérimée had spent over thirty years writing passionate, brilliant, and deeply personal letters to an anonymous woman (later revealed to be Jenny Dacquin). When these were published after his death, they became a massive hit, but the public only ever saw his side of the conversation. Elizabeth Balch decided to write the missing half of the romance.flagstaff hil, warrnambool, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, an authors love, prosper merimees

Bendigo Operatic Society White Paper Cover Black & White Text Programme Booklet Production 'South Pacific' Opening 10th August 1962 for six nights. Does not state where performed. With the permission of Chappells Ltd Bendigo Operatic Society presents 'South Pacific.' A Beatrice Oakley Production. Music & Lyrics Rogers & Hammerstein II. Book Hammerstein II & Joshua Logan. Musical Director Mr Max O' Loghlen. South Pacific's plot is based on James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 book Tales of the South Pacific and combines elements of several of those stories. Rodgers and Hammerstein believed they could write a musical based on Michener's work that would be financially successful and, at the same time, would send a strong progressive message on racism. South Pacific focuses on an American nurse stationed on a South Pacific island during World War II, who falls in love with a middle-aged expatriate French plantation owner but struggles to accept his mixed-race children. A secondary romance, between a U.S. lieutenant and a young Tonkinese woman, explores his fears of the social consequences should he marry his Asian sweetheart. The issue of racial prejudice is candidly explored throughout the musical, most controversially in the lieutenant's song, "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught". Supporting characters, including a comic petty officer and the Tonkinese girl's mother, help to tie the stories together. Because he lacked military knowledge, Hammerstein had difficulty writing that part of the script; the director of the original production, Logan, assisted him and received credit as co-writer of the book. Hard cover book. The Life and Campaigns of General Lee Author: Edward Lee Childe Translator: George Litting, M.A., LL.B. Publisher: Chatto and Windus Date: 1875 Further Information: Black Cloth hardcover with lettering to spine in gilt. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.non-fictionThe Life and Campaigns of General Lee, published in London by Chatto and Windus in 1875, is a biography of the Confederate general Robert E. Lee, written by his French-based nephew, Edward Lee Childe. The book traces Lee's family history and upbringing, including his education at West Point and his early military service, then covers his major campaigns the Seven Days Battles, Second Bull Run, and Chancellorsville before turning to Lee's personal life, his marriage to Mary Custis, and his views on slavery and the Confederacy. It runs to roughly 336 pages in most editions. Notably, the book opens with a lengthy, strongly pro-Confederate defence of secession and states' rights; its Introductory chapter argues at length that slavery was not the war's real cause a reminder that this is very much a partisan Southern sympathiser's account, not a neutral military history.book, the life and campaigns of general lee, edward lee child, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, warrnambool, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, great ocean road

Harvey Perkins was a Methodist minister and a peacemaker throughout his life of service and social activism. He knew the certainty that without justice there can be no peace, within, or between, communities and nations. He was greatly influenced by ''liberation theology'' and framed his life of thought, analysis and action on the teachings of the Bible. He was also a visionary in working closely with Asian churches on ecumenical and social justice issues in a way that anticipated by decades the closer relationships Australia now enjoys with Asia. He understood that any form of intervention altered the power relationship within a community and often challenged the dominant social interests in the post-colonial Asian countries. He knew any form of aid had to empower its recipients and be based on a partnership of equality. In the early 1960s, Perkins was an opponent of the war in Indochina and conscription in Australia and played an important role in activating congregations to protest against the war. His keen intelligence, knowledge of history and analytical skills demolished the false foundation on which the US and its allies entered the war and he organised medical and social work teams in South Vietnam and Laos to help refugees and displaced persons. In the 1970s Perkins played an important role in ''decolonising'' and devolving power in the Methodist Church missions in Aboriginal Australia and the Pacific Islands by analysing power structures and relationships through what he had learnt in Asia. Harvey Perkins and his twin sister, Jean, were born in Tasmania on January 29, 1919, children of Leslie Perkins and his wife, Doris (nee Cook). Leslie was a Methodist minister and Harvey and Jean's childhood was spent in parishes in urban and rural areas of Tasmania and Victoria. The family saw the grinding poverty and desperate human need wrought by the Depression as a ceaseless tide of people came knocking at the door of the local parsonage for help. In 1941, Perkins enlisted as an officer in the Australian Navy and served in the Pacific theatre until 1946. To his children, he explained his justification as being the real threat of invasion but it was a war that altered the direction of his life. On discharge he abandoned his completed studies at Melbourne University in law and commerce and studied for a degree in divinity. He was active in the World Student Christian Federation and in 1949, was ordained into the Methodist Church. A few years later, Perkins travelled to a World Student Christian Federation conference in Canada, on his way to study in Cambridge, and met an expatriate, Jill McCrory. They married in 1953. After Cambridge, Perkins returned to Australia and served as a minister in the Mitcham area of the growing Melbourne outer suburbs until 1956, when he was appointed General Secretary of the Australian Council of Churches and director of the Inter-Church Aid and Refugee World Service. From 1968 to 1971, Perkins worked with the East Asian Christian Conference and then took a position with the World Council of Churches in Geneva with its Commission on Churches Participation in Development. He returned to Australia in 1973 to a position with the Methodist Board of Missions and then returned to the Christian Conference of Asia in 1976 and relocated to Singapore for several years. Before retiring in 1984 he worked with the Uniting Church Board of Social Responsibility. In retirement Perkins continued to work in the Dee Why parish, enjoying preaching, leading study groups and working as a pastor in a local community. Along with his work, Perkins had a lifelong passion for AFL and his beloved team North Melbourne. Wherever he was in the world he could be found fiddling with a short-wave radio to listen to a game. In later years, Perkins developed Alzheimer's and his home became his haven until two weeks before his death. Harvey Perkins is survived by Jill, children Mary, Ro, David, Marguerite, Anna, Harvey and Kate and their partners, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Jean died in 1981. Ithaca House, the home of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society, is located at 329 - 335 Elizabeth Street. The site was purchased in the mid 1950s to build the club rooms. The money for the venture was raised by the issue of non-redeemable 10 and 50 pound debentures to members. Nicholas Sofarnos, a young Ithacan architecture graduate, designed the building. Construction was completed in 1958. Up until 2020 Yamaha were long standing ground floor tenants. Prior to the building of Ithaca House, from 1917 up until 1958, the club rooms were located on the top floor of Michael's Building on the corner of Lonsdale and Elizabeth Streets. The Ithacan Philanthropic Society has been a focal point initially for expatriate Ithacans and as the years have passed it holds many happy memories for Australian born Ithacans through the generations.A coloured photograph of a three storey grey building in a city street with two cars being driven along the road. The Yamaha Motor Bicycle company occupies the ground floor, and in the adjacent building Honda motorbikes are sold. There are curtained windows across the width of the second floor and signage on the top floor windows indicates this level is used for social events such as receptions and dances.

Gillian Bouras comes and goes between London, where she spends long periods, and the village in the Peloponnese to which she migrated nearly twenty years ago. Unable to settle in either England or Greece, her life is one of perpetual journey, of constant goodbyes and starting again. Even in Australia, where she was born and raised, she feels like an outsider. This journal deals with the complexity of finding your place in the world. Maurice is forced to confront his own mediocrity as a musician, and Louise's chequered past comes to light through a former lover, leading to a violent confrontation, further betrayals, a suicide, and finally Louise leaving Maurice, who then walks into the countryside and shoots himself. It is essentially a naturalist tragedy of obsessive love and thwarted artistic ambition, set against a vividly rendered expatriate music-student milieu.warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, maurice guest, henry handel richardson
