His major research interests have been in Aboriginal and natural history of the Melbourne area. He researched The Place for a Village as a PdD, in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at The University of Melbourne. The book, which was published in 1806, gained immense popularity over the years. The case was brought to court, and after much debate, it was ruled that Rundell had indeed infringed on Murray's copyright.
