In 1869, the Warrnambool Meat Preserving Company commenced their business on the site, where it operated until 1875 when it was sold to the directors of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill Company. After being destroyed by fire in 1882 it wasn’t until 1910 that the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce was approached by Marcus Saltau and Peter McGennan to invest in a new mill. The original directors were James Dickson, P J McGennan, Robert Swinton, M Saltau, and J W Younger. In 1955 the Warrnambool Woollen Mill formed a partnership with the Wangaratta Woollen Mills. Dunlop bought the mill in 1968. From that time until its closure in 2000 it had a number of different owners, the last being the Smith Family Industries. The Mill site holds significance for Warrnambool as the site was one of the earliest industries established in the town. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill operated for close to 100 years and in that time forged a strong link with the people of Warrnambool. William Baragwanath was educated at the Ballarat School of Mines, obtaining a Geology Certificate in 1911. After further study he went on the become Secretary for Mines, and Chief Mining Surveyor. This small cannon ball was found by the donor around 1975 to 1977 when he was digging a trench to install underground cables at the Warrnambool Surfside Caravan Park' Its location is just below both Cannon Hill and the 19th century Fortifications at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. The ball is made of iron. Cannon balls were used as ammunition for a cannon gun and fired at a target. This cannon ball is only 8 cm round, or 4.15 inches, and is likely to have been called a 4-pounder (4-pdr). The ball was made from molten iron was poured into the small opening of a two-piece mould. The seam between the moulds sometimes left a raised ring mark on the ball, as can be seen on this ball. The ridge would have been filed to make the join smooth, sometimes leaving a slightly flat area. Six 4-powder cannons were recovered from Endeavour Reef, Queensland, in 1969. They were from Captain Cook's HMS Endeavour, thrown overboard when the ship struck a reef there in 1770. They are likely to have been mounted on deck cannon carriages on the ship. Similar 4-pounder cannons were mounted on gun carriages and used as field guns. Cannons with cannon balls as ammunition were installed at Warrnambool for protection from possible invasion in the mid-to-late 19th century and early 20th century.Cannon ball, iron, black with a pitted shiny surface. It has three flat areas and evidence of a seam around the circumference. There are remnants of a possible inscription stamped into the iron. The cannon ball is a four-pounder ball. Ammunition shell was used in a 40 lb Armstrong Rifled Breach Loading (RBL) Gun. It does not contain explosives because the projectile and explosive were separate items. The Armstrong 40 lb BL Gun There were 4 x 40lb Armstrong (RBL) Guns issued to the Ham and Beef Battery at Hastings Victoria. After the Hastings Battery field artillery disbanded, the 4 Guns were transferred from the Hastings Battery to the Warrnambool Battery field artillery in 1904. (There is a photograph of one of these guns on its carriage, pictured in front of the Orderly room (Drill Hall) at Warrnambool, which is now the Library of South West TAFE). The 40lb Armstrong Guns were recalled back to Melbourne when the government issued the updated 4.7inch QF (Quick Firing) Naval Guns, mounted on carriages, to the Warrnambool Garrison Artillery 1907. The Hastings Museum today holds one of the original 40lb Armstrong RBL guns that were at first at Hastings and then Warrnambool, evidenced by tracing the numbers on that gun. This gun has now been restored. Surviving 40 lb Armstrong BL Guns in Australia The Hastings Museum has restored one of the Guns that was at Hastings and then from 1904-1907 in Warrnambool. It is divided into three distinct parts, which were published sequentially between 1748 and 1752. Volume One contains The History of Fossils (1748). Despite the modern name, "fossils" back then referred to anything dug out of the earth. This volume focuses heavily on mineralogy, gemstones, rocks, and minerals, mapping them out based on a microscopic examination. In Volume Two, A History of Plants (1751), Hill covers botany, describing the appearance, geographic range, and medicinal uses of various native and exotic plants (like the coffee tree, cacti, and various herbs). Volume Three concentrates on various animals and is called An History of Animals (1752). It's a zoological survey that starts with microscopic organisms before moving on to insects, marine life, reptiles, birds, and mammals. A safety razor is a shaving implement with a protective device positioned between the edge of the blade and the skin. The initial purpose of these protective devices was to reduce the level of skill needed for injury-free shaving, thereby reducing the reliance on professional barbers for providing that service and raising grooming standards. The term was first used in a patent issued in 1880, for a razor in the basic contemporary configuration with a handle attached at right angles to a head in which a removable blade is placed (although this form predated the patent). 1847 William S. Henson. patented a "comb tooth guard or protector" which could be attached both to the hoe form and to a conventional straight razor. May 1880 by Fredrik and Otto Kampfe of Brooklyn, New York, improved the 'safety razor' and it differed from the Henson design in distancing the blade from the handle by interposing,, "a hollow metallic blade-holder having a preferably removable handle and a flat plate in front, to which the blade is attached by clips and a pivoted catch. 1900 King C. Gillette had the revolutionary idea of disposable blades so thin and so strong they were deemed impossible to forge by MIT-trained scientists. By 1901, he’d proven them wrong with his breakthrough innovation. The success of Gillette's invention was largely a result of his having been awarded a contract to supply the American troops in World War I with double-edge safety razors as part of their standard field kits (delivering a total of 3.5 million razors and 32 million blades for them). The returning soldiers were permitted to keep that part of their equipment and therefore easily retained their new shaving habits. The subsequent consumer demand for replacement blades put the shaving industry on course toward its present form with Gillette as a dominant force. Plastic disposable razors and razors with replaceable disposable blade attachments, often with one to three cutting edges (but sometimes with four and as of recently, five cutting edges), are in common use today. This photo shows a large paddock of beet (sugar beet) growing on a flat paddock, probably on the Snowy River flats. The fertility of the Snowy River flats is legendary. Although almost any crop could be grown, in the early years, because of the poor transport from this remote region of Victoria, only crops that could be stored, usually dried crops such as maize, could be produced. After the railway was constructed to Orbost in 1916, other crops could be produced and send by the Railways to Melbourne. Associated with crops such as sugar beet was the need for a huge amount of hand-labour, particularly for harvesting. Sugar beet was usually sent to a factory in Maffra. This photograph is significant because it is rare, and shows a field of sugar beet growing on the Snowy River flats, Orbost, in the 1930s. It shows the flourishing of agriculture in the inter-war period, and following the construction of the Railway to Orbost.This is a small b/w photograph, printed as a postcard. These items are from the Temple estate. George Temple (1832-1916) started Temple's store opposite Orbost Post Office. Packed stores to Bendoc area gold fields, also had a store in Cann River. This item is an example of a popular piece of jewelry worn by women in the early 20th century. These brooches were sold in a local store and could have been purchased for a local funeral.Black, bakelite brooch - three small sections form centre of brooch, one is a hexagonal cone-shape with hexagonal dome attached by link to smaller circular polygon attached by link to a smaller flat pentagon. Black mesh in the shape of wings form the backing featuring eight bakelite stars of varying sizes (two smaller stars missing from the assembly). Panning dishes were used for washing fine gold from river sediments or from the residue trapped in cradles and puddling tubs. They were often used on the edge of streams/rivers to sift gold from alluvial soil or crushed quartz. This simple pan would have been filled with sand and gravel which might have contained gold. The pan was submerged in the water and shaken to sort the gold from the gravel and other material, with the lighter material gradually being washed over the lip until only the heavy deposits, such as gold, remained at the bottom. (ref. Museum Victoria) This pan was used by George Henry Douglas Russell Snr. As a young man prior to his enlistment in WW1 he panned for gold using this dish. During the war he became a vet sergeant in charge of horse lines.Gold panning is the oldest and simplest method of extracting gold. Gold pans had widespread use in alluvial gold fields where water is available. This item is an example of the type of pan commonly used on Victorian gold fields.A circular dull metal panning dish which has a wide rolled top lip which tapers down to a smaller diameter for the base which is flat. The pan has been made from ironmetal which has a coating of another metal with a matte grey finish.
