John Kendrick Blogg was born in Canada and migrated to Victoria in 1877. In 1884 he established a successful industrial chemistry business, which included extracting perfume from Australian native trees and plants.liquid ammonia for refrigeration, acetic acid, perfumes, shoe polish, baking powder and non-alcoholic drinks. Other products were He lived at 'Balmoral' in Albany Crescent, Surrey Hills; his woodwork was produced here. Family oral history has that he took up woodcarving after his 1st wife, Annie, died in 1893. His earliest known piece is a music cabinet of 1901; the latest is a panel of 1932 when Blogg was 81 years of age. He was a member of the Victorian Artists Society and exhibited there between 1920 and 1924. Much of his work incorporates motifs of Australian flora, particularly gum leaves. John and his family were members of St Stephen's Presbyterian Church, Surrey Hills. The present church building was dedicated in December 1910 and J K Blogg's contribution to the new building was the Hogg Memorial pulpit which is comprised of 13 panels. Blogg carved more than 300 pieces for churches, schools, royalty, family and friends. Many of J K Blogg's pieces remain with family members, but he is represented in municipal (City of Whitehorse), state and national collections. In addition to work in the St Stephen's Presbyterian Church within the Surrey Hills area his work was produced for Surrey Hills Primary School, Surrey Hills Bowling Club and Surrey Hills Methodist Church, however perhaps his most famous local work is the honour board at the Shrine in the Surrey Gardens. Blogg was also a poet. This spiky, pointy metal flower holder, often called a flower frog or kenzan, was made around the late 19th to the early 20th centuries by Stayput Products of Melbourne, Australia. The flat metal base has been made in layers with the head of the spikes between the layers. It is likely to be handmade. Heavy flower holders made of non-corrosive metals are designed to sit in the base of a vase, dish, bowl or other suitable holder so that cut flower stems can be pushed into the spikes and held firmly in the arrangement. Flower frogs can be made of glass, ceramics or, more recently, synthetic materials.The flower holder is an example of Victorian era domestic decoration aids that have carried through to the 21st century.Flower holder, rectangular block made from layers of metal, with spikes embedded into the metal. The block is heavy, likely to be lead, and the spikes are strong brass pints arranged evenly in rows. There are remnants of florist's putty between some spikes. This display of butter was created by Mrs Jessie Petterson for the Harvest Festival. Ten pounds of butter was used. The Harvest Festival display was always put together by the church ladies ( Orbost Presbyterian Church) and was a family friendly festival celebrating the end of summer. The Harvest Festivals were regular community events in Orbost during the first half of the 20th century. This gilt plate is from an era where master crockery manufacturers where either located in Britain or Europe.The cost of transportation and the time taken to receive items limited the availability of first class goods. This was an era that was "British is best" in all manufactured goods. With the slow influx of European immigrants European manufactured goods also became of high value. This social requirement was more of a prerequisite for the more affluent rural population, especially at a time when Australia "rode on the sheep's back". Fine British and European goods were a "status symbol", even in rural Australia. After World War II, the invasion of American and Japanese merchandise opened up the market place for cheaper "throw away" items. Longevity and quality of goods fell away as the "throw away" society rolled on.This item demonstrates the time when the rural sector was at its most affluent and influential in dictating the strong ties between Australia, Britain and Europe. The very influential "Country Party" ensured that the protection of the rural sector was well entrenched. The ability of the "well off" rural sector, in this period, were not only able to travel abroad but also to purchase expensive items "overseas" cutlery and crockery. The significance of this item is that it highlights a period in time when the "rural" affluence was at its peak.This hand painted floral gilt plate is a cream fluted china plate decorated with pink and yellow orchid flower arrangement. On the 19th of January, 1983, Cynthia Shone of Frankston received a Tattersall's Award for Enterprise and Achievement. The award was presented by the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Frankston, Jane Hill. Mrs Shone received the award "for her ingenuity in inventing simple aids for fellow arthritics which allow them to be more self-sufficient". A woman impersonating satirist Barry Humphries' most well known character, Dame Edna Everage, was the star attraction at the opening.
