... former ballarat gaol walls... garden terrace ballarat gaol battery paddock former ballarat gaol ...When Ballarat Junior Technical School's new building was opened in 1921, the surrounding area was rubble-strewn with raw clay slopes. The Head, A W Steane designed the landscaping of the slopes from the Gaol wall down to the Battery Paddock. The boys did much of the work. Apart from beautifying the grounds, this project occupied their leisure time, particularly as they had nowhere to play. The school acquired the gaol site in April 1969. The work of improving the grounds which was begun by A W Steane and his students is being carried on.Eight Form 1 boys from Ballarat Technical School planting trees at the old Ballarat Gaol terraces. On 7 March 1964 the Former Ballarat Gaol was opened to the public resulting in a large turnout. These photos were taken during the visit and show various sections, inside and outside, of the gaol. .1) Shows the ground queued up; .2) Front entrance, people starting to move inside; .3) Looking through the bars; .4) view of the curved wall with sentry's walk and guard's tower; .5) Looking through bars to stone wall; .6) Walking down the narrow steps from the top of the wall. There were around 13 hanging at the former Ballarat Gaol. .1) The large timber used for the gallows was only put in place when a hanging was to take place; .2) The platform for the gallows. The timber was lodged into the wall hitching above the trapdoor; .3) The gallows trapdoor. The former Ballarat Gaol was commenced in 1856 and completed in 1862, This view looks up Lydiard Street South, and was taken before the Ballarat Courthouse was built south of the gaol in 1868. The wall was built from quarried basalt with local bricks. A system of burning the lime mortar between the joints and the shape of the wall meant it had a high degree of stability. From 1870 on more buildings were constructed and these became the School of Mines and Industries Ballarat. The Gaol closed in 1965. This image shows the Ballarat Gaol c. 1861 giving us an understanding of what the site looked like before all the changes that have occurred over the years since the gaol closed and other organisations have had the site. The gate shown in the photograph is located on the same wall as the large double main gate of the former Ballarat Gaol. Next to the gate is a watchtower with guard walk on top of the brick wall. This corner location provided the guards with a clear view into the gaol grounds and the street outside. Most of the gaol was demolished to allow for the School of Mines to expand. This watchtower remains along with the main gate, Warden's Quarters and the Governor's residence. These buildings are now used by Federation University Ballarat.Colour photograph of the former Ballarat Gaol Gate and watchtower taken c2000. Structure built from red brick and locally quarried basalt. Guards walk on top of wall from tower to gate was corrugated iron. After the Ballarat Gaol was closed it was handed to the Ballarat School of Mines. The gaol cells were demolished, and sections of the former gaol walls were incorporated into the Amenities building. Sport and available playing areas were important and every effort was made to provide this for the students when they moved into the new building in 1921. The terraces leading down from the gaol wall were terraced and clearing areas of rubble to provide playing areas for football and cricket was done by the students. In November 1922, a tennis court was opened in the Battery Paddock. It was designed by Syd Chambers and constructed by Les Waller, former students of the Ballarat School of Mines. A new tennis court was built and opened in 1934, in the same area. This photograph is of the 1938 Tennis Team - Ballarat Junior Technical School. The boys standing are L to R: D. Eltringham and J. Burt. Seated on the left is W. Rowe and W. Edwards on the right. They are with Mr J. Hosie - staff member 1938-41. Donald Eltringham was Dux of the school in 1938.
