p.587.In seventeenth-century France, a daring young man defends the queen's honor and tests his skills against the best swordsmen of the day D'Artagnan journeys to Paris armed with nothing but his sword, his courage, and a burning desire to prove his mettle as a member of King Louis XIII's elite guardsmen. A swashbuckling corps of gentlemen rogues, the Musketeers live to antagonize Cardinal Richelieu and sweep every woman in France off her feet. Before d'Artagnan can join their ranks, however, he must distinguish himself on the field of battle. On his first day in the capital, d'Artagnan accidentally offends the honor of three dashing Musketeers--Athos, Porthos, and Aramis--and agrees to duel each one in turn. But before they can match steel, the combatants are interrupted by the cardinal's guards, embroiling d'Artagnan in complex affairs of state, dangerous court intrigues, and a sinister battle against the wily and seductive spy Milady de Winter. Hard cover book. The Life and Campaigns of General Lee Author: Edward Lee Childe Translator: George Litting, M.A., LL.B. Publisher: Chatto and Windus Date: 1875 Further Information: Black Cloth hardcover with lettering to spine in gilt. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.non-fictionThe Life and Campaigns of General Lee, published in London by Chatto and Windus in 1875, is a biography of the Confederate general Robert E. Lee, written by his French-based nephew, Edward Lee Childe. The book traces Lee's family history and upbringing, including his education at West Point and his early military service, then covers his major campaigns the Seven Days Battles, Second Bull Run, and Chancellorsville before turning to Lee's personal life, his marriage to Mary Custis, and his views on slavery and the Confederacy. It runs to roughly 336 pages in most editions. Notably, the book opens with a lengthy, strongly pro-Confederate defence of secession and states' rights; its Introductory chapter argues at length that slavery was not the war's real cause a reminder that this is very much a partisan Southern sympathiser's account, not a neutral military history.book, the life and campaigns of general lee, edward lee child, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, warrnambool, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, great ocean road

An Authors Love Author: Prosper Merimee's Publisher: Macmillan And Co Date: 1889 Further Information: Being the unpublished letters of Prosper Merimee's 'Inconnue'fictionThe book is an epistolary novel (a story told in letters) written by the American author Elizabeth Balch (though it was published anonymously at the time). It was written as a highly clever literary hoax and a sequel of sorts to a major 1873 French literary sensation, Lettres à une Inconnue (Letters to an Unknown) by the famous French dramatist and short-story writer Prosper Mérimée (best known as the author of the novella Carmen). Mérimée had spent over thirty years writing passionate, brilliant, and deeply personal letters to an anonymous woman (later revealed to be Jenny Dacquin). When these were published after his death, they became a massive hit, but the public only ever saw his side of the conversation.
