Rawleigh's & Co. manufactured various household products in a factory in Collins Place, Melbourne, between 1930 and 1935. The W.T. Rawleigh Company was an American company started by William Rawleigh in 1889. The company expanded to both Canada and Australia with the Rawleigh company specialising in medicines, remedies, food additives, cleaning products and toiletries. Due to increased demand, Rawleigh’s required a larger factory and thus built the factory in Dawson Street Brunswick Victoria and by 1950 the factory had been extended to include 98,000 square feet of floor space. The Brunswick factory ceased production in the late 1970s and manufacturing was moved to New South Wales. During the peak of production, more than 200 people were employed in the Brunswick factory and several independent sale representatives sold their products door-to-door throughout the country. The ‘Rawleigh’s man’ was a regular door-to-door salesman of inter war and post-war suburban Melbourne. Rawleigh’s products are still in production today.A significant item as it gives a snapshot into domestic life and social norms of the pre and post war period in Melbourne and throughout Australia and New Zealand. ... One and sometimes two prisoners did the heavy cleaning of floors, windows and furniture polishing. I remember one prisoner down on his hands and knees polishing the lino in the long hallway to a bright gleam, and when a prisoner was helping in the residence, ‘Aunty’ Elsie, the prisoner and I would always have morning tea together in the kitchen. ...One and sometimes two prisoners did the heavy cleaning of floors, windows and furniture polishing. I remember one prisoner down on his hands and knees polishing the lino in the long hallway to a bright gleam, and when a prisoner was helping in the residence, ‘Aunty’ Elsie, the prisoner and I would always have morning tea together in the kitchen. ...This knitted toy rabbit was given to the donor as a child, made by a prisoner at the Geelong Gaol. The donor spent Christmas holidays at the gaol, below are some of her memories of these times: Eric Stafford was the Governor of Geelong Gaol and he and Elsie Stafford lived in the Governor’s residence at the front of the gaol where I stayed during Christmas holidays from about 1959 to 1962. ‘Aunty’ Elsie had the help of prisoners with the housework. The backyard of the Governor’s residence was divided in two. The kitchen window overlooked the front part of the yard and I was allowed to play there with the dogs as ‘Aunty’ Elsie could keep an eye on me. The back part of the yard was behind a gated wall and I was not allowed in there as prisoners worked on the back garden, the chook pen and doing general maintenance – although I sometimes sneaked in with the dogs to see the chooks and have a chat but was called back. In the back there was a large padlocked iron bound door in the large bluestone wall which ‘Uncle’ Eric could open. A couple of times he took me through this door which opened into the gaol’s large vegetable garden. I only went twice as a didn’t like going there because all the prisoners working there would stop doing what they were doing, stand and silently stare at me. Of course holidaying in Geelong there was always the great beach and carnival rides. ‘Aunty’ Elsie and I would walk to and from the beach and on the way home would stop and buy an ice cream at the nearby shop. Sometimes we would buy an ice cream for ‘Uncle’ Eric and if there weren’t any vans, prisoners or visitors in the gaol entrance courtyard I was allowed to take the ice cream to ‘Uncle’ Eric in his office after ‘Aunty’ Elsie phoned him from the residence. ‘Uncle’ Eric had a sheep farm in Meredith and sometimes he took a prisoner with him to do some work on the farm. I can remember on the way to the farm sitting in the front seat of the vehicle squeezed in between ‘Uncle’ Eric and a prisoner with the dogs and equipment in the back tray. - Donor, 2025Woollen cream knitted toy rabbit in a knitted pink dress with a knitted green petticoat, knitted green panties and a little knitted cream rabbit tail. Attached please find drawings of my house at Ringwood. 2. It is for sale at £4,865 or to let at £5 per week to an approved tenant. 3. I sold it to Mr. De Garis and vacated it, but it is now back on my hands. 4. I leased another place instead of living in my own. I may be able to cancel same; in the meantime, however, I propose to sell or let my own. The painters are now going through the place; re-varnishing, re-oiling and re-polishing so that in about five days it will look "spick and span". 5. The house was specially built under my own supervision. 6. It is very suitable for a high class Guest House, Doctor's residence, Hospital or Convalescent Home. If you know of anyone whom it might suit, please communicate with them. DESCRIPTION 7. It stands on 305 feet of land facing Greenwood Avenue. It is cement, roughcast and hardwood, well oiled, and is now being redone so that the house is as good as new; red tile roof; verandahs three sides; two sleep-outs; five bedrooms; large dining room; very large music room with nooks, upstairs lounge, study; sewing room; built-in wardrobes and cupboards throughout; handsome kitchen with handsome pantry cupboard with drawers and glass front; one bath room; one shower room; wash house with patent copper and laundry. The theatre was in need of some serious repair and improvement. Fred and Susan spent 17 years relaying and polishing ...The Garfield Picture Theatre was built in 1924 for Martin Donohue, and according to Mr H. Arnold, who wrote a history of the theatre, it was leased to J. Taylor. It was said to have seated 800 people, and dances were held on Friday evenings with pictures shown on Saturday nights. The theatre was one of the many movie-viewing venues constructed during the Australia-wide boom in cinema building in the 1920s. The Garfield Picture Theatre was Cardinia Shire’s first cinema in the region, followed by Kooweerup’s Wattle Theatre and Pakenham’s King’s Picture Theatre which opened in mid to late 1927. The theatre is significant to the area as it’s one of the few picture theatre buildings remaining in the shire. The Garfield Picture Theatre was not only the main entertainment hub for the area, but it was the town’s first source of electricity. The theatre closed in 1962 and reopened in the 1980s as the Garfield Trading Centre, owned by Sam Jensen, who used to sell used furniture, bric-a-brac and antiques. The theatre stayed that way until 2001, when renovations began by owners Fred and Susan Perez. The theatre was in need of some serious repair and improvement. Fred and Susan spent 17 years relaying and polishing the original floorboards, installing roof insulation, as well as building a commercial kitchen, inside toilets with a disable toilet, upstairs living quarters, full verandah, and drainage and decking around the whole outer edge of the theatre. The theatre is a well-preserved and gabled red brick building, with internal renovations creating a grander experience than the original. The front facade still has its original raised cement letters `Garfield Picture Theatre' and sits above a deep cantilever street verandah which extends the front of the building. The Garfield Picture Theatre made a triumphant return as an entertainment venue on Sunday 03 July 2016, and now hosts various music events and is a great venue for weddings, corporate events and dances. The theatre seats 250 and has a lovely outside area with beautiful gardens including piano. Colour photographs of the Garfield Picture Theatre.garfield, garfield theatre -

... They have two adjustable shelves as well as the base shelf and stand on legs supported by a single stretcher with a polished wood finish. Furniture Bookcase ...Their polished wood finish appears to be original to their date of manufacture during the 1960s‐70s. They were located in the head keeper’s and assistant keepers’ quarters, where their use for office purposes also may have crossed over to a domestic function. In the post‐war years the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service (CLS) introduced modern, low‐cost furnishings to lightstations. Most notably, it commissioned a number of light, compact and functional items in bulk from émigré designer, Steven Kalmar (1909‐ 1989), who played a significant role in popularising modernist design concepts in Australia and drew his ideas from Scandinavian and American design trends. Born in Hungary, he trained as an architect and his contemporary affordable furnishings were especially suitable for the open‐plan houses being built in Australia’s new post‐war suburbs. It is not known whether the bookcases bear the Kalmar label, but the design, particularly the legs and bar bracing, is a signature style that is associated with his Sydney‐based firm, Kalmar Interiors. The CLS supplied the same bookshelves to a number of other lightstations, including Point Hicks, Cape Otway and Gabo Island, as well as other types of furnishings such as tables and cabinets. The bookcases have first level contributory significance as examples of the modernist furnishings that the Sydney‐based firm, Kalmar Interiors supplied to the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service in the post‐war years. The bookcases stand at about bench level and are almost square in dimension. They have two adjustable shelves as well as the base shelf and stand on legs supported by a single stretcher with a polished wood finish. -

In 1926 EAC Russel built the mill's 3ft gauge steel rail tramway - with Old Bill's Timber Tractor - to transport timber from the sawmill to what is now Puffing Billy's line. It ran 14 km from Gembrook Station. This tramway was one of only five in the state to use articulated steam power. The Timber Tractor was a six-wheeled Day's model, two of which ran on the Timber Tramway alongside two locomotives - a Kerr Stuart 0-4-2T (which was not powerful enough to do the job) and a geared locomotive built by Day's. The tractors were likely in use until 1953. This photograph, taken by H. Russell, shows relatively normal operation of one of the tractors in the mid-1930s, moving two wagons of processed timber towards Gembrook. Interestingly, the frontmost wagon also appears to be carrying several pieces of furniture. This is a photograph of the book "Bellbrakes, Bullocks & Bushmen: A Sawmilling and Tramway History of Gembrook 1885–1985," by Mike McCarthy. This book is also in our collection, as VEMU1479.Russel's sawmill, through its associated tramway, contributed to keeping the line which is now Puffing Billy running commercially thanks to the quantities of timber it needed to transport. While it has not been operational for a long time, the timber tramway and its rail tractors occupy a significant place in the region's railway history. This item is a photograph of a book, capturing a black and white photograph that was printed in the book and the accompanying printed caption. The photograph features a rail tractor, moving two tractors filled with cut timber. The background is forested and there is vegetation along the line. There appear to be several unclear pieces of furniture on top of the timber in the frontmost wagon.Obverse, Caption in Photographed Book: Top Right: "Down the Black Snake 49" Bottom Right: "Removing furniture from / the bush was not a problem / although the french polish- / ing may have suffered! / Russell's tractor near Gem- / brook in the mid 1930s. / Photo: H.
