Two page typed document detailing information of the North Johnson's Mine on the Garden Gully line of reef. The mine was located in California Gully, the shaft is approximately 66 yards north of Thomas Street. The shaft was 3,480 ft deep and sunk with the line of reef. This company, together with its northern neighbour the Rose of Denmark, first became a prominent gold producer in 1867. The New Moon Company was registered by William Vinton in the Victorian Government Gazette (45) on Friday 8th July, 1870. (page 984), The place of operation was Napoleon Gully, Eaglehawk, Bendigo. Nominal capital was £24,000 pounds; shares being £1 . The names of the shareholders and number of shares held, was as follows: Nicholas Jeffrey 9000 shares, James Forde Graham 6000 shares, Joseph Harris, 1500 shares, John Wearne 1500 shares, John H. Hay, 1500 shares, Thomas Grieve 1500 shares, Henry Young 1500 shares, Alfred Wainright 1500 shares. With the exception of Wainwright, all shareholders lived in Eaglehawk. Alfred Wainright gave his address as 'Ireland'. On 23rd August, 1870, William Vinton, Mine Manager, reported that 'during the last fortnight we have crushed 294 loads of stone for 188 ounces 11 dwts of gold; 100 load still on surface, the roads being in such a bad state, we have been unable to cart it to the machine'. Gill Reef is a high-grade gold reef located within the Bendigo Goldfield, specifically on the Garden Gully line of reef. In the mid-2000s, Bendigo Mining planned to undertake trial mining and processing of ore from this reef to restart gold production in the region. While it showed promising indicators, the success of commercial production depended on the trial results and the economics of the time. Location: The Gill Reef is part of the broader Bendigo Goldfield and is located on the Garden Gully line of reef. Geology: It is a quartz reef with an estimated grade of 10–15 g/t gold. News reports from 2008 also describe it as a high-grade reef with promising signs of gold. Historical context: Bendigo Mining was preparing to trial mine and process ore from the Gill Reef around 2008 as part of a plan to restart gold production in the area. New Bendigo Gold Project The Bendigo goldfield is centred on the urban area of Bendigo (population approximately 60 000) in central Victoria, 130 km north west of Melbourne, Australia. Gold was discovered at Bendigo in 1851 and production continued through to 1954. The Bendigo goldfield is the second largest goldfield in total gold produced in Australia, after Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile with a total production of 22 million oz. The geology of the Bendigo Field consists of a series of tightly folded, interbedded sandstone and shale sediments. Within the sediments the gold mineralisation is hosted in quartz reefs or ribbons closely associated with anticline axes and reverse faulting. 'Among the earliest of the stacks built at Bendigo in connexion with Quartz crushing plant, are the two figured in this Annual report No 1 was situate in Sailor's Gully but was demolished about three years ago. This, if not the first, must have been one of the first built, for it had a stone inserted on which chiselled the date 1854. It was built altogether of rough masonry. The other, No. 2, is still standing at the Sheepshead line and was apparently of later date, the upper portion being of brick. They are intersting landmarks of an era that is rapidly passing.' Albert Richardson was an expert on the history of the Bendigo Goldfield. The Albert Richardson Park at Victoria Hill, is named in his honour. The initial partnership in a quartz crushing plant between Henry Koch, Simon Albert and Charles Wallin was dissolved in 1860 with Koch becoming the sole owner. In 1866 the crushing plant consisted of a 50 hp engine and 48 stamping heads capable of crushing 600 tons of quartz per week. By 1902 there were 72 stamps and this was by far the largest crushing plant in the area, serving many quartz mines. Henry Koch (1800-1889) was a German sailor who signed off when his ship reached Melbourne in 1851. Having heard of the gold discovery he proceeded to Bendigo where he was initially employed in puddling in the Myers Flat area. He was soon employed and then made partner in a quartz crushing plant that he became sole owner of in 1860. He was also landlord at the British and American Hotel and the Silver Mines Hotel. HE also started the Perseverance United gold claim. He married Anna Maria Theresia Heinz in 1857. In 1872 he sold the crushing plant for 75,000 pounds and took his family back to Germany. He resumed his trade as a ship builder although he maintained many Bendigo mining interests.Photocopy of an article from the Bendigo Advertiser, dated 5/5/1982 titled Fortunes carried in mine. Albert Richardson was a mining historian who wrote widely on the mines of the Bendigo Goldfield. The park opposite the Goldmines Hotel in Marong Road, is named in his honour. Eight page handwritten document with details of the Carlisle United Gold Mine at Long Gully. The lease was 76 acres, 660 yards on line of reef. The Kent shaft was the next mine north Havilah Road, Boldt Street's corner. 'The Carlisle United was formed by the amalgamation of ttte companies, the Old Carlisle, the North Garden and the Passby. These mines were situated on the west side of Bennett Street in about a length of a few hundred feet, with the Passby on the Casley Street corner. And the old Carlisle and North Garden only recently being unearthed beneath the Unity, 'Carlisle' sand heap.' Details about the mining plant, the main shaft, the winding engine air compressor, stone crusher, and engine house are given. The Kent shaft and steel poppet legs are described. J. K. Hall was a prominent local mining figure, investor, and speaker, rather than managing daily underground shaft operations, Outside of Bendigo, J. K. Hall was heavily involved in interstate quartz-reef exploration. The Confidence Extended Gold Mine was a major historical deep-shaft gold operation located on the Garden Gully Line of Reef in Bendigo, Victoria. Operating predominantly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it played a vital role in confirming Bendigo’s global status as one of the world's richest quartz-reef gold mining fields. Merle Hall Collection: Rosalind Park Creative Village Bendigo Project Pamphlet for Rosalind Park Lookout - two copies. One side of the pamphlet has a layout image of the five sections of the mosaic and the poppet head base. The sections are numbers 1 to 5 Section 1: A stylized representation of the main Bendigo Goldfield based on a geological plan (Publish in 1992). It shows the lines of reef, including the famous Hustlers, Garden Gully and New Chum. Section 2: A typical cross section of the Bendigo Goldfields Section 3: The mine layout shown in this design features part of the Garden Gully line of reef.
