Pennies made a bright brooch and especially interesting if it featured the current year it was given".Brooch fashioned from Australian 1943 penny. Else Oertel was an internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. Else (a German) was interned in a camp where Russian was being taught & so took up lessons. Her husband was away on business in Germany at the outbreak of war and was not interned with them & therefore Else was also motivated to learn Russian because it was possible she would be repatriated to the Russian sector of Germany at the end of the war (namely Chemnitz, Saxony). This book is one she used in these lessons. Composed of unlined pages hand-bound together inside a foolscap manila folder(?) / other cardboard. Spine has lined paper on outer & inner spine has lined paper with sums handwritten (perhaps new use for old maths lesson book?).|Book contains lessons in Russian (possibly dication?) with occasional German notations. Lessons are carbon copies from another source. Else-Lore Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A as a child, with her mother from 1940-1945. Woodworking was popular amongst the internees and Werner Dehnel, another internee in camp 3, made the darning mushroom for Else-Lore, for darning socks.Wooden darning mushroom. Darker wood at top. Base (stalk) is of lighter wood. Both possibly varnished. Stalk has bevelled lines where it meets top. Base has 1939 Australian penny underside. Else-Lore Oertel, with her mother, was a German internee in Camp 3 A as a child, from 1940-1945. Her godmother, another internee, Friedel Dehnel (Tante Fiffi) made the hanging for Else-Lore & wrote out the poem on the back for her.Handmade wooden plywood wall hanging, painted, of sleeping blonde haired baby dressed in light blue laying in a cradle painted dark blue (with red heart) with checked red & white curtains & bird (robin red-breast) atop the curtains. Cream bed furnishings, grey floor area. Back has leather attachment for hanging on wall. In 1943 German internees in camp 3 (Victoria) decided to produce theatre productions of their German heritage to familiaize their children with their culture/to keep everyone busy/ interested/ and involved as a community. A comment was made that this exercise was very successful.Kept the German culture alive in the camp. Karl Hilgenfeldt was a German national working in Persia (Iran) in 1930's, interned by British, transported to Australia in 1941, interned Loveday Camp until January 1944, transferred to Camp 1 Tatura and released in late 1946. This fire truck was made by Rev. Friedrich Schoettler, a Missionary with Lutheran Mission at Ammele and Wanjma in New Guinea. He fled to Australia, from the Japanese, during WW2, being a German national. He was interned at Tatura, Victoria, where the internees made toys to sell for spending money. This truck was given to me, Don Kuhne, by my parents for Christmas about 1944. I am surprised that it lasted as long. My brothers used it. We towed it around the farm behind push bikes, etc. In the early 1960's I worked with Lutheran Mission New Guinea and had the pleasure of knowing Rev. Schoettler, helping with aerial food drops to his small mission station.Maroon truck, yellow radiator, black running boards and mudguards, green tray, 2 wind up handles with a pulley and cord which operates an extension ladder mounted on the tray of the truck.
