David Wadelton’s photographs capture the architecture, people and character of Darebin’s suburbs and surrounds since 1975. Wadelton’s photographs preserve the past while also documenting the slow transformation and gentrification of the inner-city suburbs. This record is collected in publications and anthologies as well as more informally on the Facebook page Northcote Hysterical Society, which Wadelton has run since 2019. In 2016, David donated a suite of 20 photographs to the Darebin Art Collection, providing a wonderful archive of Darebin’s local history. Artist Bio David Wadelton was born in 1955 in Terang, Victoria, and now lives and works in Naarm/Melbourne. He studied visual art at Preston and Phillip Institutes in Melbourne, graduating in 1976 and 1982, respectively. Since the early 1980s, he has exhibited extensively throughout Australia with regular solo exhibitions at Tolarno Galleries, Melbourne. A survey exhibition of Wadelton’s paintings and photographs, 'David Wadelton: Icons of Suburbia', was presented by McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery in 2011. In addition to his career as a visual artist, Wadelton has made significant contributions to the field of experimental music in Australia.preston

Braybrook was originally part of the former Shire of Braybrook and later the City of Sunshine. However, in 1994, Victoria underwent council amalgamations, which resulted in Braybrook being incorporated into the City of Maribyrnong. The suburb of Braybrook continues to attract considerable attention from the residents of City of Brimbank, particularly its historical features, the old buildings and distinctive streetscapes that characterise the area.To capture the essence of Braybrook in 2021, a series of photographs were taken. These images document a range of buildings, street scenes, and other notable points of interest throughout the suburb, providing a visual record of its unique character.5580.01 - Ashley St - Former 3LO - AWA Frequency changing building 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.02 - Ashley St 65- 67 Braybrook - Central West Shopping Centre 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.03 - Ashley St 185 - 195 Braybrook - Former National Springs 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.04 - Ballarat Rd 226 Braybrook - Ashley Hotel Ballarat Rd 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.05 - Ballarat Rd 234 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.06 - Ballarat Rd 234 Braybrook 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.07 - Ballarat Rd 244 - 246 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.08 - Ballarat Rd 256 Braybrook - ETA Factory Facade 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.09 - Ballarat Rd 256 Braybrook - ETA Factory Facade 2021 Photo 04.JPG 5580.10 - Ballarat Rd 261 Braybrook - La Porchetta 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.11 - Ballarat Rd 272 Braybrook - Former Holden Car Dealership 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.12 - Ballarat Rd 282 Braybrook 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.13 - Ballarat Rd 286 - 288 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.14 - Ballarat Rd 288 - 290 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.15 - Ballarat Rd 290 - 292 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.16 - Ballarat Rd 306 - 308 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.17 - Ballarat Rd 353 Braybrook - Braybrook Hotel 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.18 - Ballarat Rd 353 Braybrook - Braybrook Hotel 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.19 - Ballarat Rd 353 Braybrook - Braybrook Hotel 2021 Photo 03.JPG 5580.20 - Ballarat Rd 353 Braybrook - Braybrook Hotel Blue Stone Bar Sign 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.21 - Beachley St 23 - 33 Braybrook - Shops 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.22 - Beachley St 23 - 33 Braybrook - Shops 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.23 - Braybrook Commons Community Gardens Skinner Reserve 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.24 - Cranwell St 40 Braybrook - Klipspringer 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.25 - Darnley St 83 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.26 - Duke St 144 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.27 - Evans St 1 Braybrook - Harkrome Quality Electroplaters 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.28 - Evans St 9 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.29 - Gilbert St 8 Braybrrok - Steeden Engineering Co Pty Ltd 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.30 - Hampden St Factory Demolishment 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.31 - Kent St Braybrook - Sunshine VRI Bowling Club 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.32 - Kent St Braybrook - Sunshine VRI Bowling Club 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.33 - Kent St Braybrook - Sunshine VRI Bowling Club 2021 Photo 03.JPG 5580.34 - Lily st Braybrook - RecWest 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.35 - Maribyrnong River Temple to Temple Trail Sign 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.36 - Maribyrnong River Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.37 - Marj Laffin Scoreboard Kinder Smith Reserve Lily St Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.38 - Myalla St 40 Braybrook - Salvation Army Hall 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.39 - Myalla St 40 Braybrook - Salvation Army Hall 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.40 - Quang Minh Buddhist Temple Burke St Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.41 - Quang Minh Buddhist Temple Gardens Braybrook 2021 Photo 04.JPG 5580.42 - Ramon Vila Pavilion Kinder Smith Reserve Lily St Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.43 - Solomon Ford Maribyrnong River 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.44 - South Rd 204 Braybrook - Caroline Chisholm College Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.45 - South Rd 204 Braybrook - Caroline Chisholm College Quinn Auditorium Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.46 - William Barak Sign Duke St Reserve Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG ballarat road, ashley street, beachkey street, cranwell street, darnley street, duke street, evans street, gilbert street, hampden street, kent street, lily street, maribyrnong river, myalla street, south road, 3lo radio transmitter, central west shopping centre, national springs, ashley hotel, eta factory, la porchetta, braybrook hotel, klipspringer, harkrome, steeden engineering, sunshine vri bowling club, recwest, kinder smith reserve, marj laffin, salvation army hall, quang minh buddhist temple, burke street, ramon vila pavilion, solomon ford, caroline chisholm college, william barak, aboriginal, aborigine, first nation, braybrook

The Lochiel barn was used as the church for all denominations until 1885 when the parishioners were offered the use of a school room, then used the Mechanics' Hall after it was built in 1887. Mr James Cameron, fostered the developing Church, not only by allowing his barn at Lochiel Park to be used for Church services but also by making a home there for Mr Martin ,First Church of England clergyman stationed at Orbost - 1884-1891 over a period of years, until a small Vicarage was built on the spot where the present church stands. From Mr Cameron’s barn the church migrated to the school building erected in the main street and thence after a short time to the Mechanics Hall, built in 1887. This item is reminiscent of the late 19th - mid 20th centuries when church-going was more common.A very old black / white photograph of a house with a barn in the background. This bust was commissioned and made in the years before Holroyd's retirement from the bench. It is not known precisely when the bust entered the Library collection or the circumstances of its execution and commission. Justice Holroyd (1828-1916) was a judge of the Supreme Court for 25 years, after a successful career at the bar. Charles Web Gilbert (1867-1925) was a largely self taught sculptor, only tackling the medium of marble in the years before World War One. After the war he made a number of War Memorials, but his best known work is his statue of Matthew Flinders, the explorer, in Swanston Street. The portrait of Justice Holroyd is of interest as an unusual depiction and commemoration of a Judge. It is notable as a work by the distinguished Australian sculptor Charles Web Gilbert.Marble portrait bust of Justice Edward Holroyd. The bust is made of white carrara marble. The pedestal is made of rouge marble. The bust is slightly larger than life size. The head is finely detailed, Holroyd is shown wearing contemporary clothing, but the detail is less fine, than for the head and beard. The bust is signed and dated 1901

This photograph is part of the Mary Gilbert Collection. This photo shows the first Orbost State School which is now known as Ruskin Street Primary School. "The 19th of March 1886 proved an important day in the lives of many early settlers in the Orbost area, because on this day the Orbost State School opened. The fact that the school had first operated temporarily in a leased building, and on a half-time basis with SS2745 Jarrahmond, did not dampen the enthusiasm of the local inhabitants as they saw their offspring commence their education under the guidance of HT Campbell Mackay. However he remained in charge only until 12th of May 1886. The second HT, John Rowe, served until 1908. On 30th of June 1887, a portable room was provided; it being brought to the area by schooner. The school now had accommodation for 30 pupils; the teacher's welfare was considered because quarters of two rooms were attached. As the population increased so did the needs of the school. This was reflected in the provision of a larger classroom in 1898. During 1910-11 the first approaches were made to the Department for the establishment of a HES in Orbost and this became a reality in 1912. Orbost HES supplied post-primary education in the district until a high school was built in 1948. When fire destroyed the school in 1941 local halls were used as classrooms until a new school was built. Work was quite rapid and a new brick structure was opened by the Hon. A. E. Lind, MLA, on 13th of February 1942. This new building was a fine type of school of which both the pupils and the HT Leslie Collins were indeed proud. But Orbost continued to develop and the new school was soon overtaxed. This resulted in the erection of two Bristol classrooms in 1947. By 1950, when the school population had reached 500 pupils the opening of the new school at Orbost North was welcomed by all concerned. In 1963 the Department purchased land diagonally opposite the school and developed it as a playing area. In 1965 two LTCs were opened in November, and in October 1968 the Brodribb School building was moved to SS2744 Orbost for use as a general purpose room." Edward James Pardew died in 26/9/1927 aged 92. He came to Orbost from New Zealand in 1886 and selected 720 acres of hill land in the Brodribb area. He was a member of the first Orbost Shire Council. His daughter had a fruit & meat shop in McLeod Street. He was an inaugural vestryman of St James Church of England. One of the most prominent farmers on the Snowy was John Gilbert, a large landowner.
