From the 12th to 13th of July 2002, Arthritis Victoria (AV) held a Health Professionals and Consumers Seminar and a Health Professionals' Dinner in Robinvale (north western Victoria) as part of its Rural And Regional Education (RARE) Program. The keynote speaker was Rheumatologist, Dr Mano Thevathasan (Victorian President, Australian Rheumatology Association). There were also presentations made by Arthritis Victoria's Education and Services staff. This photo depicts (from left to right) Graem Kelly (CEO Robinvale Regional Health Service), Helen Stead (Arthritis Victoria), keynote speaker Dr Mano Thevathasan, Shirley Irvine (Robinvale Arthritis Self Help Group), and Judy Lee (Physiotherapist, Robinvale Regional Health Service). The 10 photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio, at Laverton on the 13th of November 1985. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cricket, cross country, golf, sailing, pistol shooting, squash, rifle shooting, softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The “O.H.A.R.A Rock” was awarded to the shooter with the lowest score in rifle shooting. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. Refer to Item 6267. This photograph is of a train on the small rail bridge which crosses over the Burn Road Newmerella cutting. In 1912 work was underway to complete the Bairnsdale to Orbost section of the railway. This meant the end of river transport for the area. The railway was opened on April 10 1916 and closed in 1987. The Ballarat School of Mines was established in 1870 through the initiatives of the Ballarat Mining Board making it the oldest site of technical education in Australia. The Board was concerned with the shortage of mine managers for the goldfields. Classes began in surveying, mathematics, and chemistry and a decade later they included metallurgy , assaying and geology. With the decline in goldmining the direction of the college changed and broadened, the art School was established and the Ballarat Junior Technical School developed. In 1976, the tertiary sector seperated from the School of Mines and Industries Ballarat to form the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In the 1980s SMB was a Community College of Technical Education and Further Education (TAFE) offering a wide range of vocational, enrichment and preparatory programs. It is continuing the tradition of providing for the educaiton needs of people within the Central Highlands. During the 1970s and 80s it acquired and refurbished old buildings and developed new facilities to keep up with the needs of an expanding curriculum and student population.
