Andrew Black ran his successful shoe repair business in a shop in Swanston Street, Carlton situated just around the corner from Queensberry Street. This is a family photograph of Spiros Raftopoulos (Levendi), his wife Hariklia and sons Stathi and Naki, and daughter, Apostolo (Loula). The photograph was taken about circa 1937, four years after the family arrived in Australia (1934) and settled in Merbein . Spiro had been to Australia earlier in 1922; his brothers John and Efthimio Raftopoulos (Fiakas) were were well established with businesses in Mildura and surrounding towns.A laminated copy of a family group studio photograph. This anvil once belonged to Goodall and Sons, who were blacksmiths in Terang. The smith was called upon to do a variety of work. In the early 1900s he was often the nearest person to be able to perform an engineer’s services for many miles around. An anvil is used by blacksmiths to forge and shape his work pieces. The conical horn is used for hammering curved work pieces. The anvil is a common tool of the blacksmiths (‘smithies’) and other metalworkers. There has been very little change in the basic design of the anvil since Greek and Roman times. Henry Goodall (1870-1936) Henry Goodall was proprietor of garages as H. Goodall & Sons Pty. Ltd., at both Terang (McKinnon and High Streets) and Mortlake (Dunlop Street). His business was in operation in at least in 1916 and perhaps well before, considering the date of the tyre bender and its use for wagons with wooden wheels. It was still in operation in 1953, chasing up debtors in Mount Gambier Court. Amongst the employees of H. Goodall & Sons Pty. Ltd. was Ernie Entwistle, a blacksmith (a soldier who died in 1916 ) and Alfred Hodgetts, radio expert (killed in a fatal accident in 1943, when he was in his early 30s ). Henry Goodall was involved in the community as a Justice of Peace, a deputy coroner, President of the Mortlake Hospital, trustee of the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, and as a prominent Freemason. He and his wife had two sons (Charles and John) and one daughter (Mrs. Chas. Newton, of Skipton). The anvil is locally significant as it was used by a local company in Terang and Mortlake in their blacksmith, wheelwright and garage business. It is an example of the tools of the blacksmiths’ trade in Victoria in the early to mid-1900s. Anvil, single horn, used as a tool by blacksmiths and metalworkers. Large block of metal with a flat top face, a conical horn on one side and a ‘v’ shape on the other. The anvil’s base has a squat stand and sides that are a variety of shapes. GRANT, Thomas (From Short Notes on Ringwood - RDHS) Born 1854, died 1933, aged 79 years. Thomas Grant, born in Burwood, Victoria, came to Ringwood in 1876. On land purchased from Mr. D. Gostick in Whitehorse Road, in the vicinity of the present Drive In Arcade, he built a blacksmith's and coach building shop. In 1880, he married Mary Ann French, of Mulgrave. There were four children, Andrew, Mary, (died in infancy) Thomas, and Margaret. Miss Margaret Grant is a well known resident of Mullum Road. With the opening of the station in 1882, activities in the growing district tended to congregate in its vicinity, and, in 1883, Mr. Grant moved his “smith" to the corner of Adelaide Street. At the same time, he planted out an orchard on his land which ran from Ringwood Street, to Warrandyte Road, and north as far as Mullum Greek. Eventually, about 1910, he sold his business to the Reed Brothers, and retired to the comparatively lighter life of orchardist and market gardener. In 1909, he sold 8 acres of his land to the Lilydale Council. This land, situated in Ringwood Street, behind the Town Hall, is known as the Ringwood Reserve. Mr. & Mrs. Grant were foundation members of the Methodist Church. He was appointed a Trustee in 1879, and served until his death 54 years later. He was an enthusiastic member of many societies, and he held public office in civic affairs. His interests included the Progress Association, Cricket Club, and the Agricultural Society, at whose annual show, he was a regular exhibitor. The two men photographer are Angelos Lucas and Rev. Patsogiannis. Angelos arrived in Australia around the turn of century shortly after his brothers, Ioannis and Andreas. They owned the Lucas Cafe under the clocks of Flinders Street Station and the business remained in the family till the 1960s. Ioannis and Andreas were founding members of the IPS and Angelos was the second president of the Society between 1924.-1926. Angelos was also president of the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria for three terms, from 1930-32, 1934-40 and 1949-52.The Lekatsas brothers were prominent members of Greek community life in Melbourne from the early 1900s.A black and white portrait photograph of two men. Anthi Chilianis and her husband George lived in this house at 4 Hotham Street, South Melbourne for fourteen years from 1945 to 1959. They left the house when the family went to live in Ithaca. The house now houses a printing business. It was Anthi's favourite house and she and George often sat on the balcony drinking Greek coffee. The following is written underneath the photograph - Chris Pappas ... then and now. Mr. Pappas was born in 1898 and came to Australia from Stavros, Ithaca in 1911. The earlier photo was taken in Australia , aged 14 . . " when I had saved enough money I bought these clothes . . . I had an uncle in Newcastle and he had a shop . . . most of the Greeks had someone to work for them then. I worked there for 3 years. My family didn't want me to leave (Greece) so early . . . those days the 'slavery market', relatives wanted someone to work for them who they trusted." Contemporary photograph taken in Newcastle, 1986. Chris Pappas' story is similar to that of many Ithacans who arrived in Australia in the early decades of the twentieth century. Newcastle was one of the regional areas in NSW whereto Ithacans settled and opened businesses.Two black and white photographs have been printed on the one board. They are photographs of a man when he was young and as an old man. Details of the man's story have also been printed underneath the photograph.

The photo is of Thalia Paizis taken in Ithaca in 1907. Thalia left Ithaca as very young child together with her mother, Chrisaida, to be reunited with her father, Nicholas Paizis in Perth W.A. Nicholas had left Ithaca prior to Thalia's birth in 1905 and established a successful business in Perth, W.A. Thalia went back to Greece in 1921 and eventually returned to Australia where she married Anastasios Papadopoulos in 1929 and settled in Melbourne. Speros Kostopoulos first arrived in Australia in 1900, returning to Greece to serve in the 1912-1913 Balkan wars and then returning to Australia. He was a foundation member of the IPS in 1916, the same year he married Ivy Peak. In partnership with his brother Othon Kostopulos he ran successful cafe businesses in the CBD and St Kilda. He later purchased a poultry farm in what is now the suburb of Chadstone. When the farm was eventually subdivided, Ithaca Court was named after Speros' birthplace and Ivydene Court (incorrectly listed as Ipydene) after his wife Ivy. The lady is Regina Mavrokefalos, mother of Constantine Mavrokefalos (Black) and paternal grandmother of Nina (Regina) and Olga Black, both well known in Melbourne's Greek community for their contributions to Greek language and culture. Constantine first emigrated to Australia in 1902, returning to Greece circa 1912-13 to serve his home country in the Balkan Wars. He met and married his Efstathia (Toula) Raftopoulos on Ithaca in 1914 and returned to Australia with his wife. Constantine had trained as an accountant, but his qualifications were not recognised in Australia. Changing his surname to the Anglicised "Black", he started off working in his older brother Dionysios's cafés before going into business on his own. In 1917 he opened the Paris Residential Café at 54-56 Swanston Street, which offered both dining and accommodation. The business saw some years of success, but did not survive the Great Depression. Photographed is Stathi (Efstathios) Vlassopoulos (Vlass) (Kopela) arrived in Melbourne in 1932 and headed to Mildura where his father Dimitrios Vlassopoulos, was established. From there he moved to Hopetoun and operated his own cafe business. He later returned to Melbourne where operated the Metro Cafe in Swanston Street, Melbourne. He sent the photograph to his Aunt Anastasia (Tasia Raftopoulos-Florence) who was living in the village of Platrithia on the island of Ithaca in Greece.Stathi Vlass was very active in Greek community affairs and was secretary of Melbourne's Greek Community and president of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society from 1957 to 1959, during which time he lead the building of Ithaca House in Elizabeth Street. He also published the first daily Greek newspaper 'Ta Nea' in Melbourne. Gerasimos Galatis is the shopkeeper standing outside his confectionary shop at 225 Bay Street, Port Melbourne. The chocolates were home made and were artistically presented, especially at Easter. He and his wife Ellie ran the business in Port Melbourne for over thirty years and it was a very popular venue especially as it was near the former picture theatre in Port Melbourne.This was yet another example of the various businesses which early Ithacan Greek immigrants owned and ran successfully throughout the first half of the twentieth century.A sepia photograph mounted on board of a man standing outside a confectionary shop. Anastasia Coutsouvelis is pictured wearing the white apron and standing behind the counter in her shop with her godson, Ilias Raftopoulos. Anastasia ran the successful mixed business in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, opposite the former Fitzroy Football ground from 1951 to c1976. Anastasia is the mother of George Coutsouvelis who was the founding president of the Ithacan Historical Society established in 1993.This business is another example of businesses which some Ithacan Greeks still operated in suburban Melbourne up until the 1970s, around which time this type of business was in gradual decline and fewer and fewer owned by Ithacans. The Acropol was a reception business located on the top of floor of Ithaca House (level 2). The IPS club rooms were located on the first floor. Dinner dances were held at the Acropol. Speros Defteros is the fruiterer in the photograph. He arrived in Melbourne in 1938 to join his father in a Coburg fruit shop. During his working life he had fruit shops in Toorak Road in South Yarra, Centre Road in Bentleigh and Domain Road in South Yarra. He later supplied fruit to restaurants and hotels in Melbourne. As a result of racial prejudice he experienced on his arrival, Spero took up boxing and later wrestling where he experienced success and was nominated to compete for Greece in the London Olympics of 1948. As he was unnaturalised at the time of the Melbourne Olympics he competed once again for Greece in 1956. Spero is an example of many young Ithacans who left Greece between the war years to join relations in Melbourne and to work in a family business. They later went on to open their own business, mostly in food retailing businesses such as fruit, fish and chips, milk bars and restaurants. The man in the photograph is Panayotis Raftopoulos (Politsimanos). He opened, the Leura Café and fish shop in the Victorian town of Camperdown in 1933 with Niko Karadis. Some Ithacans who settled in Australia were fishmongers as they had grown up with a knowledge of fish and fishing in their country of birth. While the majority of early Ithacans had businesses in the inner Melbourne area, a number ventured into regional Victoria. One of the men pictured outside the South Yarra Fruit Palace is Nick Sikiotis. Located at 600 Chapel Street in South Yarra, Sikiotis established the business in 1922. He also established a shop at 345 Toorak Road, on the corner of Rockley Road which was leased to a florist. His business was one of many owned and operated by Ithacans in both the Melbourne CBD and surrounding suburbs during the first decade of the twentieth century. The 'Alexandra Bros' London Café at 25 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne (close to Flinders Street Station) was owned by brothers John and George Alexandratos (Alexander) who migrated to Australia from the village of Frikes in Ithaca, Greece in the early years of the twentieth century. As well as selling fruit and confectionery, afternoon teas were served and wedding parties were catered for. The London Café became one of Melbourne's fashionable cafes at the time. George and John Alexandratos were founding members of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society which was formed in October 1916.Many Greeks who migrated from Ithaca during the first half of the twentieth century and settled in Melbourne opened cafes in the city.
