Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. This image, taken in 1868, is of of the Kelly family Homestead, located in Eleven Mile Creek, Greta West, Victoria. Northumberland County was one of the original Nineteen Counties in New South Wales and is now one of the 141 Cadastral divisions of New South Wales. The Greta area was first colonized by Europeans around Anvil Creek in the 1830s. When the town was surveyed in 1842 it was given the name Greta, possibly after a small river in Cumberland, England. Tilley lamps, famously known for their bright white light and reliance on kerosene pressure, originated from John Tilley’s 1813 invention of the hydro-pneumatic blowpipe. Developed as a portable paraffin (kerosene) lamp in 1915, the Tilley Lamp Company became iconic for durable lighting in the railways, military, and households before moving to Northern Ireland in the 1960s. Seidlitz powders were a vintage, effervescent, and mild laxative and digestive regulator popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Named after the Bohemian village of Seidlitz (now Sedlec in the Czech Republic), they were commonly used to relieve constipation, heartburn, and gas due to stomach acidity. Seidlitz powders is the generic name under which a commonly known laxative and digestion regulator was marketed and sold by numerous manufacturers, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The effervescing salts consisting of one powder of sodium bicarbonate and Rochelle salt and another of tartaric acid that are mixed in water and drunk as a mild cathartic. Brown metal box with black decorative pattern and text "Seidlitz Powders C.E Morton London England". Sachets inside were wrapped in tissue paper. A rusty small metal empty vintage brown and black patterned rectangular lidded old tin which contained Seidlitz Powders. The details printed on the lid are almost indescipherable. There is an overall black stylish pattern all over the outside of the lid and base. The powders were commonly used to relieve constipation, heartburn, and gas due to stomach acidity. Quite a damaged large thin format storybook for boys - the front and back covers are detached and depict a coloured illustration of an Indian chief, two other Indians and a European man all on horses. This faded red "Active Service" 1914-1915, The Pocket Gospel of St. John is a tiny, specialized scripture booklet distributed to British and Commonwealth troops during the First World War. The title and use of the booklet is printed on the front cover in black lettering. On the back of the front cover is a formal message from Field Marshal Lord Roberts encouraging troops to put their trust in God. The title page includes the publishing details. Throughout there are prayers, The Gospel according to St. John, hymns, and coloured illustrations. Inside the back cover is a Decision Form if the owner desired further spiritual guidance from the Scripture Gift Mission in London. It is compact to fit easily into the breast pocket of a soldier's or sailor's uniform tunic. It was designed with rounded edges to prevent the corners from bending or catching while sliding in and out of pockets.
