Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. Portrait of Mollie Riches (1896-1979), co-founder of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria (RAAV). This photo appears on page 1 (cover page) of the Vol 14, September 1979 issue of RAAV's quarterly newsletter, News Review, to commemorate the death of Mary "Mollie" Riches' on the 29th of August of that year. It accompanies a brief obituary by Dr Leslie Koadlow (1920-2006), co-founder of the RAAV. A more detailed obituary was published in the following issue of the newsletter. Dr Leslie Koadlow AO (1920-2006), Rheumatologist, was the Medical Director of the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Hospital. In 1968, he co-founded the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria (RAAV) with his secretary, Alice Petty, and one of his patients, Mollie Riches (1896-1979). This photo of Dr Koadlow and Mollie Riches appears on page 11 of the Vol. 9, July 1978 edition of RAAV's quarterly newsletter, News Review. It is captioned, "Vision Becomes Reality. Co-founders, Dr Les Koadlow and Mrs Mollie Riches, together again at RAAV's new Action Centre in the grounds of Royal Talbot, where the idea for RAAV was born." The photo accompanies an article titled, "LINCOLN INSTITUTE HELPS OUT". The article states that RAAV approaced the Lincoln Centre's Department of Educational Resources to enlist the services of their photographers to take a photo of Dr Koadlow for a press release. Deakin University was established in 1974 as the fourth university in Victoria. It has a number of campuses around the state including Warrnambool where it merged with The Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education in 1990. The university was named after Alfred Deakin, three times Prime Minister of Australia and leading figure in the process of Federation in Australia. Each year a number of students graduate from the Warrnambool Campus which is located on the Eastern edge of Warrnambool on the banks of the Hopkins River. In 2015, there were graduands from the faculties of Arts and Education, Business and Law, Science and health. Deakin University occupies an important educational position In Warrnambool and district. A project titled "Reducing Back Injuries and Energy Costs of Shearing Through the Development of Practical Modifications to Shed Layout" was funded by Worksafe Australia. The budget was $101,170. VIOSH Australia collaborated with the School of Human Movement and Sports Science to look for ways to reduce muscle injuries associated with shearing. The study set up a number of focus groups in the Ballarat area, New South Wales and Western Australia to gather different inputs and perspectives on causes of injuries. Groups represented were shearers, doctors, farmers and shearing shed designers.
