One photograph shows a line of many decorated north-bound single truck tramcars with drivers at controls stopped behind a ceremonial ribbon as a woman reaches upward to cut it. Crowds of adults and children dressed in heavy coats and hats stand behind and in front of barriers. To the right in a lighter coloured overcoat is the chairman of the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust (PMTT), Mr Alexander Cameron. The Malvern Town Hall is shown at left with its clock showing 2.30pm on Friday 30 May 1913, the day before the federal election in which the Labor government was defeated by the Liberal Party by one seat. Federal Parliament sat in Melbourne until 1927. This ceremony officially opened the new double track electric line along Glenferrie Road from the Town Hall at High Street, Malvern to Cotham Road, Kew. Negotiations between the three municipalities had taken much effort to reach an agreement. At Cotham Road, the track branched west to the Kew Post Office at High Street and east to Burke Road. Services were then provided from both these termini to St Kilda Beach via Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn Road and Balaclava Road. Two further ceremonies occurred at Gardeners Creek and Barkers Road, the boundaries between three municipalities. A second photograph shows the same convoy of tram cars stationary for an additional event at Burwood Road adjacent to the Hawthorn Town Hall (out of shot to the left). A large crowd is gathered as a photographer captures a Lady Mayoress at the driver's controls. A third photograph shows a larger crowd at the corner of Glenferrie Road and Cotham Road, Kew in front of and hanging from an electric tramcar stationary on double track. The 400 guests in fine attire included state government ministers, spouses, local municipal mayors and councillors. Also present were the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust (PMTT) Board, including Chairman Alexander Cameron, at right in a lighter coloured overcoat. The well dressed woman out front may be Councillor Mrs Wood, the Mayoress of Hawthorn. From the Port of Portland website: The original corkscrew was built as a gift to the Portland Harbour Trust by the contractors who constructed the port. It was designed in 1960 and fabricated shortly after the completion of the Main Breakwater. The corkscrew was built as an observatory, with the observation deck approximately 13 metres above sea level. Its original design life was less than 25 years. The original structure was dilapidated, extremely unsafe and in danger of collapse. Understanding the historical and community importance of the original structure, in 2016 Port of Portland began the process of designing and building a replacement. The new corkscrew is a similar size and has been based on the same spiral shape of the original structure. The corkscrew has been constructed using mild steel, heavily coated in marine grade paint (similar to what is used on ships). Long khaki coloured heavy coat. Thick, sharp angled collars. Each collar has a split half way down and a small metallic hoop attached to the lower middle section of the high parts of the collars. Each shoulder has a lapel that is fastened with a plastic button. The coat is double breasted. There are three grey buttons for use on the right and three grey buttons for show on the left. There is also a spare button on the inside left front section near the breast area. There are two pockets on the front that are angled with the highest point near the centre and the lowest point near the hips. There is a small section of spare fabric attached with two small plastic buttons to the inner left of the jacket near the breast. The arms, underarm and upper back section contains an inside khaki coloured lining of thinner, most likely cotton fabric. Attached to this at the base of the neck is a satin or synthetic fabric label with inscriptions in black ink. Above this there is a thin strip of fabric attached at either short end to use for hanging the coat on a hook. At the back of the coat there is a single pleat stretching from the base of the neck to the base of the coat. Approximately half way down the pleat there is a split in the fabric that is fastened with two plastic buttons. This jacket appears to be part of the uniform, connected to Warrnambool through its sleeve labels, and to the sea, through its anchor and chain buttons. It may have been worn in the merchant navy by a senior seaman, due to the good quality of fabric and the double-breasted design, or to life saving at sea, such as a member of the Life Saving Rescue Crew, or even a Harbour Master. This jacket has been used for display on the ketch 'Reginald M', built in 1922 in South Australia and spending the final years of its life at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village from 1975-2016. The vessel spent much of its working life as a coastal trader along the south-eastern coast of Australia.This maritime jacket is significant for its connection with Warrnambool and to maritime service. Its high quality wool suggests that it was made for a senior ranking person. A rural setting with mining, beef , milk and tobacco production in the early 1900s. Even though the community was in a rural setting, the standards of dress was the same as in the bigger towns and cities. Social and religious mores and values demanded that the personal appearance be clean and crisp no matter where a person was living or working. Heavy laborious work was considered by some religions as virtuous, therefore the heavy and tiring work of ironing during this period had its rewards. Social A black wool tails suit. The jacket is satin lined single breasted with a cutaway front and a longer back that extends into tails. The lapels are of grosgrain with peaks reducing to nothing at centre above waistline. There are three decorative buttons 4.5cm apart on each side from close to the end of the lapel to the base of the coat. The arms of the coat are lined in a white satin with black stripes and the outside cuffs have four 1.5cm buttons in a vertical line. The front of the jacket is heavily padded. A hanging tag is sewn to the inside of the collar. There is a 9.5x11.5 pocket on the front RHS of the jacket and an inside 15x14 pocket on the LHS. The pants are also of a woollen material with braided stripes down each side from top of waistline to bottom of cuff. The lining is of satin (backed with a heavy linen/hessian) at the waistline and cotton for the pockets. There is a fly opening at the front with two buttons and a metal hook and catch at the waist. There is a tightening band affixed to each side of the waist with a pull through metal catch. Six buttons are affixed to the inside of the waistband to allow for the attachment of braces. Ore bearing rock brought out of the mine was crushed at the battery by heavy metal stampers and the fine material passed over copper pates coated with mercury. Gold particles would combine with the mercury forming an amalgam which was then scrapped off the copper plates and put into the amalgam bucket ready for retorting too extract the gold. The amalgam of mercury and gold was placed into the retort which was heated to evaporate the mercury. The mercury cooled as it ran down the pipe which was recovered to be reused leaving the gold behind. The gold would later be put into a crucible and heated to burn of impurities and the molten pure gold poured into an ingot.A heavy cast iron bucket 20 centimetres high, 16 centimetres in diameter at its base and 22 centimetres diameter at the top. The Victoria Tower made landfall after a voyage of 85 days from Liverpool, and headed towards the Port Phillip Heads pilot boarding ground. It had been an uneventful voyage despite some contrary headwinds (causing the long voyage) and problems with the compasses, that could not be relied upon. The weather was hazy, with gale force winds and heavy rain squalls. Reaching the pilot ground Captain Kerr fired rockets and burned blue lights to attract attention, but met with no response. Sighting the Cape Shank lighthouse he sailed towards it, then wore the Victoria Tower onto a port tack in a westerly direction. No soundings nor observations were taken, as Captain Kerr was confident he was on a safe course and knew his position tolerably well. A visiting card, also known as a calling card, is a small paper card with one's name printed on it, and often bearing an artistic design. Visiting cards became an indispensable tool of etiquette, with sophisticated rules governing their use. The essential convention was that one person would not expect to see another person in his own home (unless invited or introduced) without first leaving his visiting card for the person at his home. Upon leaving the card, he would not expect to be admitted at first, but might receive a card at his own home in response. This would serve as a signal that a personal visit and meeting at home would be welcome. On the other hand, if no card were forthcoming, or if a card were sent in an envelope, a personal visit was thereby discouraged. As an adoption from French and English etiquette, visiting cards became common amongst the aristocracy of Europe, and also in the United States. The whole procedure depended upon there being servants to open the door and receive the cards and it was, therefore, confined to the social classes which employed servants. Some visiting cards included refined engraved ornaments, embossed lettering, and fantastic coats of arms. However, the standard form visiting card in the 19th century in the United Kingdom was a plain card with nothing more than the bearer's name on it. Sometimes the name of a gentlemen's club might be added, but addresses were not otherwise included. If a card was left with a turned corner it indicated that the card had been left in person rather than by a servant. Rain cape, also used as a groundsheet, issued Australian servicemen. Purchased for the donor from an "Army Surplus" store and re-purposed for camps as a Scout in the late 1960s. The MK VII Groundsheet (Rain Cape / Poncho) was introduced in October 1917 during WW1. They were made from dyed cotton, proofed with a rubber compound, "well vulcanized" on one side. Weight 3lb. 8oz;. 78 inches long by 36 inches wide and made by the Victoria Rubber Co. Edinburgh. They were used again during WWII 1939-45 Today the Army uses the hootchie - a sheet of 70D nylon or PU-coated cotton with various press snaps and webbing tape loops attached around the outside which allow it to be used in a variety of configuration. During WWII Australian forces fighting the Japanese in the Islands had an urgent requirement for a decent individual shelter. The rubberized canvas groundsheets and rain capes continued to be used, but these were less than effective in the tropics. Towards the end of the war in the Pacific Australia began issuing its troops a lighter weight version of the groundsheet manufactured from polyurethane-coated cotton – During the Malayan Emergency of the 1950s, Australian troops were issued with hooded ponchos. Unlike the WWII US pattern ponchos which always had a hole in the dead centre of the poncho sheet, the Australian-issue hooded ponchos made an effective shelter – especially when two where clipped together. The problem of course is that the rubberized canvas ponchos were far too heavy for jungle use. 1960s Australian units in Borneo were issued with the first pattern lightweight hootchies. 1 Kg. 1970 the Vietnam War, a second pattern lightweight hootchie was issued made from nylon, but retaining the hardware and loops. This lightweight hootchie weighed a mere 680 grams, still heavy, but suitable for tropical use. Currently the hootchie is made from AUSCAM nylon material . Sailmaker's twine is usually stored on a reel. It is wax coated and ready to use. The twine is made from strands of fibres that are plied together. The wax waterproofs the twine and smooths out the fine hairs of the fibres, making it easier to work with. The waxed twine helps prevent the ends of the rope work from fraying. Sailmakers use twine and needles to sew sails and many other canvas items such as bags and covers. Special tools, equipment, benches and seats are needed to work with the large heavy and thick pieces of canvas. Sometimes the sailmaker with have special-purpose tools made for his unique work. The place of work on shore is often called a sailmaker's loft. However, sailmakers also work on the job, on sailing ships and boats. This twine is an example imperative equipment for sailmakers. Sailmaking was an essential trade in the shipping industry of the 17th to 19th and early 20th centuries.
