High round neckline at front with V shaped lace insert from throat to bust line. Stand up lace and net collar. Top edge of collar is trimmed with pink ribbon piping and gathered cream coloured lace. There are three strips of brown tape attached vertically to the collar at each shoulder and front RHS of collar to hold plastic strips to support the collar in upright position. One piece of plastic still in place. On either side of centre front are vertical panels of pintucks with knife pleats on either side facing inwards. There are three small pink decorative buttons (1 cm) below the throat and another group of three buttons 10 cm below the first group. The top has a back opening fastened with 10 press studs. The back has two vertical panels of pintucks and knife pleats. The long sleeves have cuffs at the wrist (5 cm) with U-shaped split on upper side. Each cuff has three decorative pink buttons on one side of the U-shaped split. The lower edge of each cuff is trimmed with black lace (5 - 6 cm) that falls over the wrist. Audio - Oral History, Jennifer Williams, Mrs Helen Jackson, 9th March 2000
Mrs. Helen Jackson, originally from Melbourne, moved to Beechworth in the 1950s for the purpose of her husband's employment with the Mayday Hills asylum as a vegetable gardener. Living in Beechworth for over 40 years, Mrs. Jackson spent her time as a devoted full-time mother raising her family of biological and foster children where she has fond memories of Beechworth being a safe and fun place to live - "Oh it was, life was fun!". This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.The oral history record of Mrs. Helen Jackson is a representative insight into life in Beechworth from the 1950s onwards, specifically in the descriptions of commerce, business, family, and leisure activities for residents of the town during the post-war period until the present day. Mrs. Jackson's recollections have a social value to the town of Beechworth as a local perspective on its development and contributes to its cultural and social history. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved.This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. This item has been identified by David Nixon as the workbook of George Henry Douglas Russell (Doug) of Bete Bolong. He was the second son of John and Elizabeth Russell. John Russell wasblacksmith in Orbost. His family were Jack, Doug, Dave and Billy. Doug was in WW! where he was a Veterinary Sergeant. After the war he came bach to Orbost and his father gave him the farm at Bete Bolong to work. This farm is on the corner of Birkins Lane and Buchan Road (presently owned By Ginger and Helen Johnstone). He started farming tgere in 1920 and married Hilda Raymond in 1922. The slatted barn and house still exist. David Nixon, the donor, married a daughter of Doug and Hilda Russell and worked the farm from 1947-1973. He found the diary at the farm. This item is a valuable record of agricultural practices in the Orbost district during the 1920's.An exercise book with a worn black cover and a faded red spine. The two bridges on the railway viaduct, which crosses the Snowy River floodplain at Orbost, were built from local Southern Mahogany. Her family says she was entirely self-taught, like many women photographers who started out with nothing but the instructions on the packets of film and chemicals. In over fifty years practice she graduated from the total novice, who opened all her first mail order plates in bright sunlight and ruined them, to a competent photographer who became both the local press correspondent and an inveterate producer of humorous trompe l’oeil postcard images. Helena Francis Warren (nee McKeown) was married to William John Warren and lived in Newmerella. This is a photograph of Alan, Keith, Preston and Jim Nixon. George Nixon (1862-1941) selected land in Bete Bolong in the 1890's. He married Emily Warren in 1889 in Orbost. He was a shire councillor. He was a prominent breeder of Clydesdales and after a serious fall off a horse walked with a walking stick and special boot for the rest of his life. He was well-known for his interest in cars, horse-racing and politics.He was married to Emily Warren in 1889 in Orbost. Mrs Nixon (Emily)was the first Red Cross president during WW1. Programs and activities offered respond to the needs of the local community and the centre works closely with its community partners. It is supported by funding and goodwill from the community, state government and non-government organisations. TAFE offered adult education to those new out of school and mothers coming out of motherhood as well as others. This apron was made in 1915 by Irene Broughton, nee Long. She was born in Warrnambool in 1894 and married Arthur Broughton in 1913. She re married in 1924 Reuben Donnithorne and he died in 1931. Irene died in 1982 and is buried in the Warrnambool cemetery. The apron was left to Irene's niece, Helen Thomson who had the apron framed to preserve it. The apron would not have been in everyday use but a special garment worn when entertaining visitors for afternoon tea.This apron is a fine example of a home made house hold article from the early 20th century. The maker was born in Warrnambool.The apron is made of fine black cotton and edged with a broad lace flounce featuring a flower pattern. It is decorated with two sprays of delicately hand-painted motifs featuring Australian native flowers. The apron is in a wooden frame with a silver metal edging with scrolls on the front edge. This photograph shows the wharf in the 1980's. It is the early days of tourism, and shows Helen Coulson, dressed in period costume guiding the tourists. The sign shows distances from Echuca to significant sites on the Murray River in miles, as that was the way distance was calculated in the 1870's. The sign is no longer there.This photograph shows Helen Coulson as a tour guide. Helen was the first Manager of the Port of Echuca from the mid 1970's. The tourism industry was still in it's infancy and Helen was a strong supporter of the Port. The photograph is one of a series of photographs taken by Mike Rosel. Photographs P000027, P000028.2, P000029.3, P000030.2, P000031, P000032 are all held by Mike Rosel. This photograph shows Helen Coulson, the first Manager of the Port of Echuca, dressed in period costume, conducting a guided tour for a group of tourists, in the early 1980's. In the background another tour group is being guided through the Echuca Wharf Railway station. Shackell's Bond Store can be seen in the background. Echuca Hotel in High Street can also be seen in the distance. In the foreground there is a pile of sand bags.These photographs are significant because it shows Helen Coulson as a tour guide. It also shows that High Street could be seen from the wharf in the 1980's. Macintosh's sawmill was on the banks of the Murray River in Echuca east where the Banyule State forest is now located. A tramway ran out to it from the main rail line near the iron bridge. Macintoshes Sawmill was one of the largest in the area. (Ref. Clare Jackson. )Macintoshes sawmill was set up by James Macintosh in 1868 in Echuca East. His sawmill prospered and in 1878 was "equal to five normal sawmills" (Ref; Coulson, Helen, "Echuca Moama On the Murray." P.158) He also owned 2 paddle steamers and 8 barges.
