Household, Cup Fragment
This fragment is a piece of a cup that came from the Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool. This hotel, on the western side of Kepler Street near Lava Street, Warrnambool, was opened in 1872 with John Tate as the first licensee. Two notable families associated with the Criterion Hotel were the Humm family, (late 19th and early 20th centuries) and the McGennan family ( from the late 1920s on) The name on the fragment is that of Theresa Lynch who was the licensee of the hotel from 1919 to 1926 and the owner for most of that time. The hotel was closed in 2008 and, following a fire, the building was demolished in 2013.This fragment is of interest as it is one of the few items we have that date from the time of Theresa Lynch and the Criterion Hotel. This is a curved piece, one half of a white china cup. The fragment has been broken and mended. The fragment has imprinted on it in a red circle the name of a Warrnambool hotel and its proprietor. ‘Lynch’s Criterion Hotel Warrnambool’ theresa lynch, warrnambool -

Domestic object - Plate fragment Mansions Hotel, C1920
The Hotel Mansions was formerly the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace, erected in 1890 at a cost of around ten thousand pounds at the corner of Kepler and Koroit Streets by a group of local businessmen and leased out. Within 12 months of construction, it was granted a wine licence and was renamed the Ozone Hotel. Coffee Palaces were temperance hotels which were popular in the latter part of the 19th century. They offered recreation and superior accommodation. The Ozone Hotel operated until 1915 and was then closed before re-opening in 1920 as the Hotel Mansions. It had major renovations including a large theatre area. February 23rd 1929 saw the most spectacular fire in Warrnambool's history when the Hotel Mansions was burnt to the ground. Evelyn O'Brien was granted a temporary licence and in September 1930 she was given permission to rebuild. The new hotel, named Hotel Warrnambool was opened in March 1931. This piece of china is a relic from the fire. This piece of china is a small relic from the biggest fire ever to occur in Warrnambool and as such has strong historical significance.Fragment of burnt white, china plate from Hotel Mansions. This photograph shows the hotel without the later addition of the wooden stump to the corner near the bar door. The stump relates to the story of early closing time in the late 1800's early 1900's when if the publican thought it was safe he would put a lit lantern out on the wood chopping stump to indicate that he was still open for business. This photo is significant because it shows the building without the "stump" out the front which was a later addition.Black and white photograph of The Caledonian Hotel taken from the diagonal cornerWritten in ink -The Stump Hotelthe stump, hotel, caledonian hotel, bank street, james street -

Robin Kelly was born Robin Vandersluys in Mary Street, Kew. As a child, she sang in backyard concerts run with her brother, Leslie. The family moved to Deepdene in 1949 and Robin joined church and school choirs. Later she was to study classical singing with Stella Power, modern singing with Jack White, TV Presentation with Natalie Raine of Crawford Productions and acting/singing with Jessie Matthews. Following her victory in a talent quest at the Orama Ballroom, she was invited to join the Orama Big Band with singers Harry Cox and Arlene Forrest. Robin became resident band vocalist at the historic Federal Hotel in Collins Street with the Rudi Laquer Trio. She also sang at The Savoy Plaza with the George Cadman Trio. A year later she became resident vocalist at the Ress Oriental Hotel with the Lennie Holmes Trio. Later, Robin married pianist Peter Jones, singing under the name 'Robin Vanser' in clubs in Sydney and regional New South Wales. She was booked for a Vietnam War tour and also sang in Tahiti. Returning to Melbourne, her agent booked her to appear in shows in Tasmania including West Point Casino and Melbourne country venues. Another agent, John Bishop, booked her to do floor shows in Melbourne, including Xmas Seasons at the Hampton Hotel where she entertained audiences with her comedy and audience participation routines. In 1971, Robin Kelly retired to run her Robin Hood Antiques business in Canterbury, during which time she was married to tenor Glenn Kelly. Photograph - Clifton Hotel, Kew Junction, 1994
Of the eight hotels established in Kew since European settlement, The Hotel Kew, known for most of its existence, as the Clifton Hotel was the seventh to be built in 1868. Its location on the corner of Studley Park Road and High Street at Kew Junction makes it a prominent landmark. Its current name is confusing for local historians as its main rival for the first 52 years was O'Shaughnessy's Hotel (1855), later renamed the Kew Hotel, on the corner of High Street and Denmark Street. Looking at the façade of the Hotel Kew, it is hard to imagine its mid-nineteenth appearance. There have probably been at least four renovations or rebuilding(s) of the structure. The documented renovations have occurred in the 1930s when the late Victorian façade was given an Art Deco update. In about 1970 its façade was again 'improved'. The many publicans who have held the licenses of the Clifton Hotel have been identified in in the 'Tetlow Index' and on the 'Boroondara Local History Wiki'. The most significant of these are Henry Madden (1880-87); Michael O'Donnell (1902-1920); and the Cronin-Ryan family (1935–53ff).Fading colour positive photograph of the Clifton Hotel at Kew Junction on the corner of High Street South and Studley Park Road. The first settler to occupy the Marlo township area was James Stirling around the year 1875. He built a bark hut on the bluff that had two rooms, bark walls, earthen floors and a shingle roof. By 1884, this structure had expanded to a 9 roomed accommodation house and in 1886 became the Marlo Hotel when a liquor license was granted. The Governor-in-Council declared Marlo to be a township on 18 February 1889. During May 1889, the government surveyor, E.L. Bruce set out 19 sections of the new township, with the first sales of subdivided land occurring the following May. At this time, Stirling's Marlo Hotel was the unofficial hub for the community. It was a general store, accommodation house and the unofficial post office, with settlers taking turns in bringing the mail from Orbost or Cunningham. This continued until Aug 1942, and in 1969 was located in a house adjacent to the Marlo Hotel, before being transferred to the Marlo General Store in this year. The official Post Office List states the Marlo Post Office opened around 1902. in 1925, the "Marlo House" (a nine room accommodation guest house) was granted a liquor licence. The "Marlo House" became "The Marlo Hotel". The Marlo Hotel was popular with many Orbost and district settlers, who travelled to Marlo by horseback or buggy.
